This video is part of my "DIY cantilever sliding gate" series. It shows how a newbie, like me, with zero welding experience, painstakingly welded a whole bunch of galvanized tubes into a cantilever sliding gate. It WAS really frustrating in the beginning, but turned out to be fun at the end.
The weld machine I was using was BX1-200C1, purchased from eBay.

Any body (beginners especially) need to know how dangerous it is to weld galvanize material without good ventilation. You should wear a respirator even outdoors to avoid any tonic fumes when welding!

Thanks NIC, it's important! And I did wear a respirator.

I did not know it was dangerous. Thankfully, I am super worried about everything and research obsessively before doing welding on any new material. Thank you very much for the heads up!

I'm actually in school for welding. so I'm learning. I really enjoy it and wanted to get started at home.

wELDING IS A CAREER, IT DOES NOT TAKE AN EXACT AMOUNT OF TIME, IT TAKES HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS OF TRYING AND FAILING AND TRYING AGAIN. aFTER MANY PROJECTS AND MANY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES while on the job training YOU BEGIN TO BE A MASTER OF YOUR CRAFT. You can get a welding certificate from a community college usually in 1 year, 2 years for more advanced and varied instruction.

Turn up the power if the electrode is sticky and to make sure you are getting penetration.

You should have mig welded this gate much easier to weld and correct type of welder to use for this application. Arc welding is mainly for 1/4" steel and thicker.

I saw a video that said its easier to stick weld galvanized. Most welding I do is also galvanized and I use a stick but was thinking of getting a mig till I saw the other video.

One thing that will help your future welding projects is the metal prep. Remove all of the plating from around the area you are going to weld. The zink is the reason it smokes and pops. Also, use a smaller rod size. 1/8" is huge for thin tube like that. 3/32 and 1/16 would be ideal for your project.

@ColtDeltaElite10mm : I noticed your comment name, I have one, bought it 8 years ago for $1000 used, and have yet to shoot it but it is a fine looking weapon ! "Break glass in case of fire"👍 Maranatha, Greetings from Tampa Florida 😎

@ColtDeltaElite10mm : I just got done welding 1 1/2" galvanized pipe, building a hand motorcycle lift,1/4 " wall and I learned quickly that the galvanized coating had to be removed (I watched this video AFTER)before welding using a Lincoln 225 amp buzz box at about 95 amps and 1/8" rods and the welds were ATROCIOUS because of my lack of skill! Looked like somebody blew buggers on the pipe,I struggled through it and grinding out porosity ALL over the place and more weld! I told my son- in -law " don't tell anybody who did this"🤯 It worked but it IS UGLY! Nothing a little Bondo won't cover, gave me a lot of respect to you guys who do this every day! atleast u tried. first tip, instead of welding the finished product always weld some scrap as a test, this will allow you to make some adjustments to: amp, electrode size, welding speed and positioning yourself for welding. at the end of the day u had a go and thats all one can ask....

What breathing safeguards were you using? You cannot breathe smoke from welding galvanized metals.

If you are learning something why practice on expensive tubing? Why not use scrap and stop messing up the nice steel?

i hear this nonsense all the time "its a beautiful weld!" what a load of crap, rather say "its a beautiful fusion!" that would make more sense, Welding is about FUSION, NOT beauty!!!, Appearance does not qualify as a good weld, Fusion does!!

Don't learn on galvanized. !!!!! It takes more skill and makes learning super hard burn beads on normal bare steel first until you get your arc mechanics down...
