I’d say this is as good as it gets for a drummer playing Buddy’s tunes today. Jo Jo is simply the tops. Thanks for the memories Buddy and RIP.

Gorgeous sound .... and pure class. Jo Jo is totally in another league on so many levels. I am not crazy at all for Greg Potter and the BR memorial band ... but this just puts a huge smile on my face. I saw Buddy seven times in concert so I well remember what the boss was all about and this just brings back so many fond memories. Thank you Jo Jo ... superb band, too.

@mellilore7 жыл бұрын
One could complain about the drums sound (too muffled, I think Jojo could have durst something more open, resonant and "classic" with a big band environment like this) and about his own fills (definitely he has good single stroke roll enough to use less bass drum into his fills and sound a little bit more "Buddy-esque", but you can't really argue personal tastes, more than over in Art). Still Jojo is the modern answer to the Almighty Buddy IMHO. And many many many compliments to the band, maybe not as tight as Buddy's ones but very very very good nonetheless! Thank you for posting!!!
@jasoncavitt20437 жыл бұрын
Nice post, mellilore. Probably the best thing an artist can do to honor an influential musician is to digest the source material fully, then render the covers as "originally" as possible. Of course, this particular performance is more of an homage situation, so no doubt It's a fine line to walk. I would have liked to hear more of the traditional open and ringing sound with a "bigger" big band type of bravado. In a few spots these guys sound a tad clunky, almost like they could have used a bit more rehearsal time. But big thumbs up overall -- excellent musicianship on display.
@mellilore7 жыл бұрын
Eh... I'm afraid the only way to make them rehearsal enough to cover the last 15-20% in order to fit 100% is having them playing 24 gigs in a month, take them altogether around in a bus and put on that bus.... Buddy!!! :) But you're definitely right, "excellent musicianship on display".
@jasoncavitt20437 жыл бұрын
Definitely, agreed. Outdoor acoustics are impossible, and like mellilore says, these guys would need to undertake an active gig schedule for some time before they began to cohere at a high level. It's good stuff though.
@mellilore7 жыл бұрын
This shows pretty good it's all relative :) Once 100% agreed that outdoor acoustics are quite impossible, let me tell you that I usually tend to be happy with his snare sound and quite happy with his bass drum sound, what I don't dig as much are his toms, and this happens each time I watch Jojo on the tube, not only this time. Look, I'm in no way criticizing him... who ever could??? plus on an "electric" small combo environment as Nerve and other things can be, that's very possibly the way one has to go. LOL at myself... You know what? I guess I just got way too used to listen at Buddy's drums.
@tonyr23607 жыл бұрын
There is another video on KZbin from this concert with the song Time Check. The audio is worlds above the audio from this upload. I think you'll find the drum sound you're looking for in that video. Jojo solos and the drums resonate beautifully.

One of the best in the world, but the drums sounds are terrible. Ride cymbal is too small and does not sound like an A cymbal. Snare is now where near crisp enough and toms are muffled. Funny cause he is sooooo into great sound. However , drumming is mad great. Love JoJo and love him with a big band. He does it all.
