The bit about lyricism is wrong. We always cared about lyricism... but we also cared about Marketing. Nas and Jay did that, Kook G Rap and them never did. Nas and Jay never got melodic, they actually got even deeperr in their lyrical bag.

The days of Big nosed economic speculators being able to exploit commercially viable artists is dead. The game is being exposed by people such as Ray Daniels and others to such a degree that only the least creative and intelligent artists would be attracted to major labels. The key for major label longevity was to keep Black artists in the dark. However, in 2024 you can look at entertainment models like Macro Studios that have a fully integrated entertainment business, down to the private equity fund that the old cartels aren't relevant.
