Did you notice she actually lived out her reoccurring dream.....searching desperately through a fog for something she was never able to find. In the final scene she did in fact search desperately in the misty night for something she couldn’t find, true love.....Rhett. She had it but found out the hard way, it was lost forever.

Margaret Guest In the book it’s even more tragic. In the book it talks about how she’s has these times whereshe questions her loyalty to Ashley and will start be sexually attracted to Rhett. When he leaves for London she misses him and looks for him around town and at one point she thinks of calling the police because she’s worried about him. Also, I encourage people to read the book because it is so, so, so much richer than the movie. Also, in the book Rhett is just around more. They have many more interactions in the book; In be can see that he deeply loves her way before he marries her. Not only that but in the book she has three children instead of one in Rhett is so kind to her other two children. So, while the movie is quite good the book, to me, is phenomenal as how it goes in to the depth of each character. As I said, Rhett is around much more in her life , he just shows up more, so to speak, in the book them their handful of interactions in the movie.

This video is amazing ! Love the slow speed of some scenes. I noticed expressions on Clark Gable's face that I hadn't before. Gable deserved the Oscar for this performance. He was even better than the Rhett in the book. And, of course, Vivian Leigh is Scarlett come to life - so beautiful.

I love Clark Gable's Rhett, and I believe he was the best actor for the job, but I'd have to disagree on him being better than the Rhett in the book. There is so much depth of personality and color in the book that can't be completely conveyed in even the most well-directed movie, and you understand the characters better reading than you do watching. The book is always better than the movie, but in this case the movie was phenomenal.

Victorm8118 Ashley wasn't handsomer than Rhett, but his gentility made him appear more attractive to Scarlett. This vid brings the pain of their relationship to the forefront. As two flawed characters who are confined by their role expectations of the day, the pretty much never had a chance. I've seen this movie a dozen times, never get tired of watching it. It's a period piece so there is racism, sexism, and misogyny. Once you prepare yourself to experience that, it is an epic movie.

I like your comment. I just re-watched GWTW recently. Yes, in the book he said he would come back often enough to keep the gossip down. He NEVER talked about divorcing her in the book or movie. If he was truly done with her why wouldn’t he just get it over with & divorce her? He clearly never cared what anybody thought so the decorum of the day was never an issue for him. The way it is presented in the movie I think there’s a chance she could get him back. In the book I think the way Mitchell wrote it there was more definitely a chance for her to get Rhett back.

Scarlett is one of the character that I like. She acts so childish but she has done so many things to help Melanie through the war and survive thru the hardship of the country during war and after. She knows how to take advantage of everything that in her hands to get her parent's home back. To build business with the Yankees......the only thing that she is not the kind of woman will sit home wait for someone like most men wants at that time. Eventhough, Rhett Butler loves her and willing to give everything that she wants but he doesn't with her all the way. Through out the movie, I think if Rhett be more support her with exactly who she is...than playing games of love with her entire time then their marriage will be in different way.

Scarlett was a mean, wicked human being. She destroyed a lot of human lifes: Her 3 husbands, her sister Suellen, the stability between Melanie and Ashley, etc. Scarlett is like Michael Corleone, bad and twisted human beings and deserved to be alone like they were at the ending of their respective films.

I love this video, it is my favorite Scarhett vid. In the description, you said neither can really seem to confess their love for each other until it's too late. I beg to differ. Rhett told Scarlett quite plainly that he loved her when he left to join the war on the road to Tara, both in the movie and in the book. She didn't say it back because she either didn't love him, or didn't know she loved him. Now, there is a scene in the movie that I wish they didn't put in, as it puts Rhett in a better light and Scarlett in a worser one. The scene on the porch right before Bonnie dies, he sits next to her and frankly, kindly and soberly proposes to help rebuild their marriage and confesses that he still loves her. In the movie, Scarlett coldly says "Our life together? When did we ever have a life together?" I personally belief that had that (Rhett's apology and proposition) actually happened in the book, there would have been a very different outcome of the couple's love story. What do you think, everyone?

Sara Snowe I realize you posted the question on whether Scarlett and Rhett reconciled awhile ago so I don’t know if you will see this but your sentiments and interpretations of various aspects of GWTW are thought provoking and fascinating. Not only do you seem to have a love for this great piece of art but you can look at both the context of what it was then and now. There was racism and some misogyny but also understand there was love. You also seem to understand the complex nature of Rhett and Scarlett’s relationship. I also liked your interpretation of the love scene between Scarlett and Rhett as not being rape. You believe they were equally to blame for their apparent demise but I must say I believe that he was more to blame. While Scarlett was more mean-spirited and Rhett nicer Scarlett responded to Rhett the night after their love rapture; she was clearly happy to see him and smiling. He became very sarcastic and then she became cold. Also, after she lost the baby and he was gone awhile and returned, Scarlett clearly and visually was happy to see him and was smiling. He became sarcastic again. I think if he could’ve read her body language he could’ve moved toward her & they could’ve reconciled. Also, when she was sick she called out for him but no one heard her. I guess, in a sense, they were both to blame but Scarlett is always looked at as the worse one. I see her as moving toward him but he just doesn’t read her visual cues. In the movie he declares his love for at least three times. In the book he keeps his feelings of love for her hidden. As far as the question about rape clearly, there was no rape: Like you, I agree, he overwhelmed her & took charge in the bedroom…so to speak. She clearly liked it and was smiling the next morning. Did they get back together or would there be a reconciliation? I think that’s the question you posed. In the movie I feel there is a chance that she will get him back. In the book, I think there’s a very good chance she could win him back. Why? He tells her he’ll come back long enough to keep gossip down and never mentions divorcing her. If he was truly done with her why wouldn’t he just divorce her? It was quite obvious he never cared for what other people might think of him and he said he had no reputation so a divorce would be not be a problem in that respect. Yes, both in the book and the movie he intends to stay married to her even though one might argue it’s a marriage in name only. The bottom line is if he truly wanted to be free from her he would be free from her through a divorce. I think in the book the door is significantly open for reconciliation. In the movie somewhat open. There are many kindred spirits on here for GWTW but you seem to get it in such a deep and profound way. On a personal note, GWTW is affecting me in a much more different and personal way probably both because I’m older & have experienced many profound losses, much like Scarlett.
@jackprescott9652
@jackprescott9652 2 жыл бұрын
Total agree with you. I think Rhett was the one who gambled everything in that marriage, even accepting that his wife was thinking in another man and letting her to share bussiness with that man. Which man let her wife to mess around with another (married) guy ? Someone who´s truly afraid to lose the love of his life. Rhett gave everything he had and Scarlett always was childish and never gave Rhett a break. I don´t know if the film was intended to be like that, but i never see Scarlett falling for Rhett loving proporsals. At the end, when Melanie dies, suddenly she realizes she loves Rhett? Why? How? She was throwing herself to Ashley arms seconds after Melanie asked her to watch for her family, in Rhett´s face! I think that is a mistake in the plot. Or is Just Scarlet knowing that is better to secure Rhett until Ashley pass his grieve. Her pleads to Rhett at the end sounds to me like if she was demanding him for another chance. I have always think that Rhett was really done at the end and he would never return.

Ashley and Scarlett don't, and will never, fit together.. He is so, i'm saying this in the nicest possible way, lifeless. Scarlett had fire in her and god I really wished they ended up together, and you saw them in the last shot together holding eachother happy🥺

You're right... they would never fit together. Scarlett could adapt and change with the times, while Ashley stayed focused on the "old South." It's the biggest reason Rhett loved her... because she was one of the few people he knew that was adaptable to the changing times.

Scarlett is really a source of rehett torture , self-devastation ,self agony and going-on sadness in the real sense of the word.

In the book, he did the same if not worse to her. Also remember, he knew exactly her character and how sheltered she grew up with the war taking her idyllic childhood from her. Rhett was extremely worldly, educated and 2x Scarlett's age when they married.

People were actually fined because of that amazing line.. "Frankly my dear, I don't give a Damn." I believe it was like a $5,000 fine or something like that. I read that a while back and never had knew about it before hand.. Just thought I'd share... 🙃
