For context, a year ago I made a video about my journey in aviation and how I managed to buy my airplane. You can watch it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aafInXVviMiAmpo And the biggest of thanks to my friends Jess and Bryan for supporting me through it all, and letting me steal runway lights, stash my plane in their hangar, use their airstrip, etc etc. Give them a follow :) instagram.com/crapwhereaminow/ instagram.com/bryankharper/

Hi Xyla! I work with runway approach lights for a living. The edge lights are run on a constant current loop that determines brightness. Usually, there are two types of regulator circuits for them, a High Intensity Runway Light (HIRL) or Medium Intensity Runway Light (MIRL). The HIRL runs at 20A for the top intensity, and the MIRL runs at 6.6A. As you noted, each edge light fixture is connected to an isolation transformer that powers the individual fixture. I've used a few spares as a load bank for running a dummy edge light circuit to test the intensity control for a REIL system, and powered them off of a 230V variac.

You mentioned that you had a hard time over the summer and I figured as much, since the amount of content you publish has decreased dramatically. But, whatever is trying to bring you down, be true to yourself. You are a pilot and an engineer, that makes you badass in my book. You are a maker and a creator, you are intelligent, young and beautiful. The world is your oyster. Make the videos / do the projects that make YOU happy and we'll keep watching. It's the mixture of your energy and your ingenuity that make your content great, not the sheer size of the project. And yes, more aviation content, please. 😉

Yes please for small projects :) I LOVE seeing your huge elaborate builds, it's super impressive and full of interesting techniques, but I'm not gonna build a canoe any time soon. These lamps, on the other hand, look awesome, and are something I could approach (maybe not runway lights specifically, since I'm not personally into aviation, but the concept of an "industrial house lamp" is pretty neat). It's also great that these short videos allow you more time to walk through more of the minutiae of the build, and obviously the fact that it's less stressful to you is a huge argument for doing more of these.

I always preferred to say things were "scrounged" for appropriate recycling!! Flying is great ! I remember my first solo flight back in 1975 a cold windy day in Pittsburgh, lots of crosswinds at AGH. Tough day to solo. My instructor made me do it!! Greatest day of my life!! Saddest day was years later, when the FAA flight surgeon permanently grounded me after an "in flight incident" I had while practicing aerobatics. I had an inner ear infection that caused inner ear damage to me and had to declare an emergency landing due to the vertigo/balance issues. Scared the hell out of me!! I love this project , nice job as always! Like your Cessna 140 too! I flew an C150 A150K Aerobat and 152 most of the time. Always loved the Piper J3 Cub too. Low and slow is always fun. You got to try a hot air balloon ride if you already haven't at early or pre-sunrise. you can't find more peace anywhere. Go girl!!

@@ekaa.3189 LOL I had no such luck! One leg after 1.5 hours I had only managed 60 miles with strong winds and much turbulence. I was not going to make the next destination before running out of fuel. Strong work on the one day build. I love reclaimed aviation hardware - plane parts, fariings, commercial flight food carts, seats, props, antique/pop art, etc. that could be turned into home decor or furniture or useful shop storage. Content like that (plus flying - would love to see your take-offs and landings, you on the radio with the tower, and explanations on how you operate your plane and any of its idiosyncracies or things I wouldn't know without actually being there.

Not shown in the video: make sure to tie the wider of the two connector prongs to the threaded part of the light bulb socket. The wide prong is the neutral conductor (same voltage as earth). The narrow prong is the hot conductor and can kill when touched. When replacing a bulb you can touch the treaded part, while it touches the socket. There is a reason why American outlets are keyed...

OK, this was an awesome video! I love how in depth you get on passion projects, but one day builds show your joy and skills just as much! I know as a content creator it's hard to strike a balance between interest, effort, and actually being fulfilled (fighting that myself right now). I haven't seen you be this joyful about a project on camera in quite a while, and seeing you do what you do best - f it, this is what's required and I'm gonna go with it but not compromise my personal goals - is awesome and ALSO epically you. I burned out by making everything a grand production. This video showed me how u can get back into creating content, so THANK YOU!

As an FAA technician, I can assure you edge lights are very frangible! I, personally, have only run over ONE during a localizer ground check in the middle of the night. Also, I'm pretty sure the FAA doesn't own any of them. They are property of the city that runs the airport, or the private airport owner. The FAA only enforces and approves or disapproves what is installed.

I actually did take out a runway light when I was a student pilot - my very first solo landing didn't go so well and I ended up in the grass alongside the runway. My instructor, ever patient, asked me what came flying off the airplane, and when we figured out it was the runway light he said, "go up, do it again". So technically I did crash an airplane (handy in two truths and a lie) and I was not allowed to keep the light :-) Also, I personally prefer the longer in-depth projects, but I know how difficult they are to edit and produce. Keep it up Xyla!
