This is a great epic, and the last few episodes are real germs with Chinese philosophy. Ending is HE. NonChinese needs some explanations on Chinese philosophy to understand the logic, story twists and plots.

the trick that Shi Ying used to hide Zhu Yan was called The Magic Sleeve. it's a classic Taoism trick you'd see in Xian Xia fictions. here's some background info about this drama: the whole story was taken place in the Yun Huang Land. people in Yun Huang believed in 2 gods: the destroyer and the creator. in Kong Sang's legend, their initial emperor and empress were the incarnations of the 2 gods. 7000 years ago, Shi Ying's ancestor Xing Zun emperor (mentioned in the drama when announcing the allotment of donations ) and empress Bai Wei reunified Yun Huang, completely drove the Ice clan out of the continent and destroyed the merfolk's country. they left two magic rings: Huang Tian and Hou Tu. only their descendants could use the ring. to ensure the Emperor blood stayed pure and powerful, all Kongsong emperor had to marry the princess from Bai clan. this was why Shi Ying's father didn't like Bai Yan (Shi Ying's mother) but still had to marry her. after 7000 years since Kong Sang was established, the emperor blood was diluted by generations. however Shi Ying was born with the purest blood and that's why he's a genius in learning the magic techniques and his emotions could move the celestial phenomena

The major families are Bai { white} Crimson { red } Azure { green/qing} etc. Shi Ying's mother is Bai Yan from the Bai {white} clan. Zhu Yan is from Crimson {red} clan. Shi Yu's { Shi Ying's brother } mother is from the Azure { green/qing} clan.

Here's an explanation on Shi Ying and the Grand Preceptor's actual relationship. **This shouldn't be considered spoiler as it's mentioned quite early on in the novel and they will mention their relations in the drama a bit later on. I thought it would aid your understanding but if you don't want to know now then please don't scroll down. The Grand Preceptor is actually Shi Ying's paternal uncle (the emperor is his biological brother) and yes the late empress was the love of his life. You can see their relationship as the Chinese version of Snape and Harry Potter, except the Grand Preceptor treats Shi Ying like his own son and is never mean to him. Their gene pool is actually quite restricted because every emperor must marry a woman from Bai Clan (White Clan) as his empress. The White King is Shi Ying's maternal uncle and in the future, he has to marry one of the two Bai princesses. So technically, every emperor is related to Bai Clan genetically. This will become more like an inbreeding if every emperor is elected from the son of the Bai Empress. Their genes will only diversify again if the emperor is chosen from a concubine's son which is usually not the case in the Menghua Dynasty. Shi Ying being the epitome of perfection that he is, is really the rare exception.
