One thing is very clear, in Ethiopia people can only invest their money in housing to ensure it appreciates. They have little else. Banks will give you 20% interest which is huge in comparison to the west but at 40 - 50% inflation, you actually lose money by keeping it in the banks. Difference in the west is, people can invest in stocks , shares, bonds. Setting up a stock market in Ethiopia has many challenges. No one will invest in companies that cannot be transparent. It means the banks or firms that want to list will have to show their books in full; debts, revenue streams , numbers of customers etc. I very much doubt many are ready to be transparent with all the corruption. Government cannot and should not get involved in markets at all. What government would have to do, only at the start, is setup a separate independent financial regulatory body without having any influence on the agency. You then need exchanges which will have their own regulations with regards requirements for a company to list and adhere the rules. The most important players will be market makers. All this has been done before elsewhere so there are templates. Recreating this in Ethiopia would not be difficult but as Ethiopia does everything super slow, it will probably takes years. The advantages of having a stock market are huge. It will take Ethiopia to the next level as companies will grow with the general public investing in them. That's the reason companies list. To grow. That growth will also make money to investors. Guy immediate right to the host knows what he's on about.
