Hi, I have a question about the proper way to hold the yangqin sticks. Should the middle finger, ring finger, and pinky hold permanently the stick in place, or should they just be there at a distance of a few millimeters and let the bottom of the stick move freely up and down and hit the palm of the hand every time the stick hits a string ?

Hello Pio2001!This is a very good question!There should still be some space for the sticks to move,however the sticks movement has to be limited by the middle finger and secured by the wall of the ring finger and pinky.If you allow too much space for the sticks to move,it will be difficult to control the moving speed of the sticks within the palm. Yes,the end of the sticks should hit your palm when it strikes the strings, creating some allowance for movement of the sticks so that the hits will not be too tight.If there is zero allowance for the sticks to move, the tightness and dead strength of the wrist will result in breaking the strings easily. You will need to strike a balance when you are playing fast,so that the movement of the sticks is always within control.Speed of the movement on the sticks must be controlled by the wrist movement.Not the other way round.Many beginners made the mistake of allowing too much space for the sticks to move and in the end,lose control while playing fast. Lastly,by minimizing the movement space can greatly increase on the firmness of the hit, creating a more impactful and solid sound.Hope this helps! : )

Yes, finally i found some good advice. I get a old Yanqin form an elder couple - they buyed instruments from countries, they visited. But they never played them. Now they buy their instruments. I was always fascinated by these hammered dulcimers and so i get it. Its terrible out of tune, but i hope i can fix it. Is there any possibility to get strings? I am from Germany and i dont get any useful informations here where i can get strings and sticks. Can you help me?
