That pop and crackle is due to something called anti-lag system. This system basically retards the timing a bit during gear changes so that the air fuel mixture combusts when the exhaust valve is open. This combustion in the exhaust pipe will serve two purposes. Firstly and importantly, is to keep the turbo spooled up so that there won't be turbo "lag", hence the name "anti-lag". Secondly, sound cool with pops and crackles.

I live in Bangalore and own i20 nline . Here is no craze of nline . I rarely see them . Most are into suv type . It's a great car and better than compact SUV in all aspects apart from ground clearance. Most don't understand cars just see the looks and status . I have driven almost all compact suv apart from Jeep and the Chinese brand . Performance wise I loved Mahindra 300 diesel apart from nline .
