In my stories, I always placed eyes specifically as an important thing. Eyes symbolize identity, allegiances, morality, it is who they are. The eyes are about as important of an aspect to a full entity as their physical form. This is what happens when something this important is suddenly stripped away, one becomes vengeful and overcome by hate, with a drive to force others to feel the same as them. To make them suffer as they do. By taking away one's eyes, you are taking away who they are, their soul's only control lost, and therefore driven only by what a soul, as a baseline level is; do anything possible to make everything the same. They'll take and give powers, do good or bad, anything possible to achieve this. Eyes are a control. Eyes help to add individuality to a completed vessel, while the soul gives emotion. A drift (a vesselless soul) is driven by nothing but emotion, while a shell (a soulless vessel) is incapable of emotion. Take away each one's core components, and they crumble into nothing. Have them combine, then strip one's core aspect away, and the other takes over. This is the horror that can ensue if the latter condition is met. Except it seems that some of the soul was taken as well, causing a lack of emotion, a lack of remorse. Driven only by a primal rage to make everything the same. To be honest, I only originally came up with the identity thing for the eyes specifically, (the concepts of vessels, shells, and drifts I've had a thing for a while now), but other than that I just made things up as I went along and this'd be something real interesting to add as a major threat in one of my books, someone gone insane, losing a core aspect of who they are, and forcing others to experience their pain.
