basically the song is about two groups ashkenazi jews and sephardic Jews meaning European Jews and middle eastern Jews both having their own sayings meaning the same thing but in their own way and he goes back and forth saying how a Ashkenazi woud say something and how the other one would say it it's a really funny song 😅

hahahahah this is one of my favorite jewish songs. Its quite satirical, as you saw from the scene where the guy is eating the hot peppers, as stereotypically, sephardi/mizrachi (middle eastern) jews consume a lot of spicy foods, while ashkenazi (European) jews mainly cook with garlic powder and paprika hahahaha. the words Tanz Habibi is a mixture of cultures, as Habibi is an arabic word for friend, and Tans is yiddish (a germanic Jewish creole) for dance. so it just means 'dance my friend' from two colloquialisms belonging to 2 forms of jews, yet said together, connoting that though we may have different customs or skin tones, we are still one nation.

so, I can't tell you enough how much I love your curiosity and your very good questions! as an observant Jewish woman, I want to answer the one about the women not dancing- the Jewish law is very keen on keeping the purity of the family unit, which is the essence of humanity. there are many points of view about it, but the main thing is the relationships and the distance between men and women in different aspects of life. since art that comes from the body, like dancing, performing and singing is something not to trifle with, from deep deep inside, it is forbidden for men, to watch a woman doing any of this (unless it's your wife/mother/daughter. most people will say also your sister and Granddaughter, but, as you may now understand, there are many different Halachic opinions about almost everything), and so the men are not allowed to watch or listen (again -there are more opinions), and the observant woman, will most likely not perform in front of a man, to fulfill the Mitzvah of: "ולפני עיוור לא תיתן מכשול""And in front of a blind person you will not give an obstacle" which doesn't only refer to the literal meaning, but also to any kind of obstacle to any person that at a given moment can be defined as blind. in our case - the blind is the man who is forbidden, the obstacle is the performance. that's why you'll almost never see a woman dancing or singing in an observant Jew's performance. there ARE many talented observant Jewish women, many of whom I know personally more or less, who are amazing performers, but they chose only to perform in front of women. the vibe is totally different and it's becoming more and more popular.

It's basically to show that even though we say things and do things differently that we all mean the same thing So the song will say Ashkenazi (eastern European jews) say something one way and then the Sephardic jews (Spanish, middle eastern jews) say it in a different way So we are all saying happy holidays but we say it differently so we are different but the same connected together

You should look into shlock rock, which is a group run by Lenny Solomon (my brother), who was a pioneer in doing parodies of rock and roll songs with Jewish content. Most people know him for his parodies such as We've got a strong desire (parody for we didn't start the fire) or Achashveirosh (parody for Amadeus) but I think you would love some of his original music. I suggest watching Trust in God, Minyan Man (probably his most popular and well known), yo-yo-yo-yarmulke (an original rap) and Leah's Song. His songs have been great at reaching out to Jewish youth who had gone away from Judaism and bringing them back in.

Unlike the first few Jewish videos you've reviewed, 8th day songs are kinda just wacky, fun and sometimes straight up ridiculous. 😄 Women are allowed to dance and do plenty of it, but keeping within traditions of modesty, any time there is dancing men and women will be separate and women aren't going to perform for a male audience. Just a disclaimer: The Netflix show that you referred to is a hit job on the orthodox-Jewish community by a few disgruntled people and I would suggest that if you have or plan on watching it, you also check out some videos responding/fact checking it by orthodox Jews to get some perspective. I'm enjoying watching you enjoy!

Jews from Spain, Morroco ,Iraq and all over the middle east enjoy very spicy foods. After the destruction of the Temple the Jews spread out across the world to many countries ( Mesopotamia, Babylon, Persia and other empires of the time) . This is a song about unity between the Middle Eastern Jews-sefardi and Ashkenazi- Jews from mostly eastern European. Our clothes, foods and even dance moves are different but our traditions and culture , core practices are the same ( our families do marry one another , my grandmother is from Iraq and grandfather's family is from Eastern Europe, Romania)

@jedimmj11
@jedimmj11 2 жыл бұрын
"Yaalili" is a nonsense word they made up. The lyrics of the song are basically a compare and contrast between the two major Jewish cultures: Ashkenazi (European) and Sefardi (Middle Eastern). For example at 5:47 the lyrics are: "Mo'adim lesimcha, (oh) Sefardi; a gut Yom tef, Ashkenazi" with each phrase being the greeting used on Jewish holidays by the respective cultures.
