The difference between Gi-Hun and Sangwoo's acts of kindness comes from genuine good heartedness and elitism. Gi-Hun giving the stray cat or taking the time while running away to pick up the girl's coffee from the ground is from a genuine kind heart. Sangwoo giving Ali some money for the bus and the like is an act stemming from "because I'm better than you I'm going to take care of you". There is a patronizing facet to his generosity.
@sanaa1073 жыл бұрын

I like the idea that Sangwoo really was sleeping at that moment, and Gi-hun listening to Sae-byeok's plea for him to remain a good person ultimately caused her death. Choosing between corrupting himself or not, someone died by Gi-hun's choice either way. It also makes it even more messed up because if Sangwoo was asleep that means he woke up as soon as Gi-hun was screaming for the people to help and his FIRST instinct is to go and kill. No matter what though it was an amazing episode with excellent writing.
@j.l.58363 жыл бұрын
how do we feel about sae byeok essentially dying thanks to winning her last game though? this is the one thing I did not enjoy about this show. I felt that her character deserved a more impactful death than "I won a game, and my reward was being given an injury that is basically a death sentence". I don't find the glass shattering to make much sense or be any fair. anyone have thoughts on this?
@Burningdark3 жыл бұрын
@@j.l.5836 I felt the same way. They made such a big deal about maintaining the fairness between the players and having them ultimately be responsible for their fates in the game, but the exploding glass doesn't fit that goal at all. They risk blinding or otherwise seriously injuring (in this case fatally) their finalists for some cheap theatrics. Even if Sae-byeok had made it to the final game in that condition, it wouldn't be a fair or entertaining match because she would be insurmountably weaker than her opponent. That sequence just feels very poorly written in an otherwise excellent story.
@j.l.58363 жыл бұрын
@@Burningdark for sure. I get that they wanted to set up this whole "sae byeok and gi hun are going to vote to quit the game" scheme but imo that wouldn't beat a more straightforward, devastating death. as you said, sang woo finishing her didn't really have much impact since she was already practically dead
@daisychong34883 жыл бұрын
@@Burningdark The 'fairness' of the game isn't for the players' benefit, it's for the VIPs. If a horse race is rigged, then that's not fair (hence, the Front Man making an example of the group that was doing organ harvesting). However, when a VIP commented about how 'boring' the game is after one of the contestants used his 30 years of experience working in a glass factory to differentiate glass under light, they powered down the light so it became impossible unless by sound. Basically, the 'fairness' of the game is for entertainment only, and for the betting of the contestants themselves. It would be a sure win for the VIPs (and thus boring) if all 4 remaining horses are to survive, winning the game. By contrast, the glass exploding is to throw in another random liability (and up the odds) to the remaining players. With the girl wounded, the odds against her is higher. But if she wins, whoever bet on her is going to win a lot.

I feel like Sangwoo has some sort of Superiority complex. Even on the outside world, despite having debt (in fact he has the most debt out of all the other players) and being just as poor as Gi, he was always dressed in a suit, like he was trying to come across as a business man while Gi was constantly dressed in casual clothing just like every other player on the outside world. He gave Ali money for the bus and brushed it off like it wasn't a big deal despite him also having barely any money, but then decided to throw that in Ali's face in episode 6 'Gganbu'.
@changedcj0073 жыл бұрын

@ranniwolves3 жыл бұрын
it’s less of a superiority complex and more of a sense of duty, at leas that’s what i got from the interview
@DeeVee71623 жыл бұрын
Also I think the reason Sangwoo went after Saebyeok (because he wouldn’t know she was gravely injured until he was standing over her) is because she’s unpredictable to him, a wild card. He knows Gihun, has known him since they were children playing these same games. He knows his movements, knows how to get into his mind and manipulate him. If he had to go 1 v 1 with anyone he would rather it be Gihun than someone who he doesn’t know and can’t predict how they would move.
@daniaaal3 жыл бұрын
I think Sangwoo knew she was injured the moment Gihun ran to the door to get help. I think he was faking his sleep and watching both of them the entire time. I think it didnt matter at that point that saebyok was someone whom he doesnt know well; we know well by now that sangwoo would do everything to eliminate as many people as possible with the least effort. Edit: he also states another reason in the next episode which i wont spoil
@12times213 жыл бұрын
I think it was because he wanted to finish the game and the two of them could’ve stopped it if there was a vote. I also think he was awake and heard that they promised to take care of each other’s families if they won. He knew Gihun would be more likely to feel guilty if he won over him as well and would look after his mom because he knows her so he put his faith in that.
@ykim04163 жыл бұрын
It's possible. But I think it is far more likely because Sangwoo considers Gi far beneath him -- not a challenge at all. Whereas as you said, Saebyeok could be dangerous even when wounded.
@panashe52683 жыл бұрын
@@daniaaal I don’t think it’s ever that deep, he fell asleep, woke up when he heard dude yelling, heard that she was injured, went to go confirm for himself and took advantage and killed her. I think it’s that simple. You guys are always trying to over explain simple plot lines, not everything has a deeper meaning behind it.
@daniaaal3 жыл бұрын
@@panashe5268 that is plausible, but the show intentionally has a lot of easter eggs along the way, from how they foreshadowed character deaths in ep 2, to how the old man’s strange happy behaviour was explained by the reveal of him in the last episode. Sang Woo was always on the hunt to take advantage of people discreetly from the moment he returned to the game. It’s not beyond logic to think that he could’ve faked his own sleep as well. Plus, if you count the duration of Gi Hun banging the door and the guards coming in to collect her body, it’s not that much seconds. Thus, it would be more logical that from the very moment Gi Hun went to the door, Sangwoo was already on the way to kill her. So no, because the Squid Game respects audiences who think deep and figure out clues, it’s possible either he was genuinely asleep or if he was faking it. Either way, brilliant storytelling from even that scene depicting uncertainty.

As for why he gave Ali the ticket...the actor and director did an interview and they said he had a noblesse oblige attitude. It's less about true "nobility", but rather a performative act of one's *appearance* of nobility. It ties to the same mentality as the wealthy creators of the game who claimed they wanted to use their money to "help" the less fortunate. But obviously this was just a performance of "fairness" & charity. The reality is the game was simply about rich people being bored and wanting to lord their money & power over the inferior class. Charity from the upper class isn't altruistic, it's an exercise of flaunting their "generosity". It's often a self-absorbed method of getting a hospital ward named after them or gaining access to a prestigious university for their child or getting the key to a city or having a photo-op in the newspaper, etc. Also, charity allows the rich to get tax breaks. So anytime you see a wealthy person just giving away cash or writing a check, ask them when they've actually volunteered their time to a cause, instead of just throwing money at a problem to make it go away.

(Please someone correct me if im wrong on this). In korea, age is very VERY important, the person who is older has to be obeyed, respected and listened to practically without question. It doesnt matter if its just by a day, you are older? You go first. Men and women have different ways to call those older than them with respect, between men, those who are younger and are close to the older one can call them "hyung". Is a word of respect and closeness, even friendship and trust. Thats why Ali smiled and bowed when Sang-Woo allowed him to call him that way. (To avoid confusion, or having to delve into detail, i get why netfilx doesnt add it to the subtitles). So. Something i find truly sad but telling, between Sang-woo and Gi-hun, is how after everything, after all the pain and loss and doubt or betray, Sang-woo still calls Gi-Hun "hyung". Even while mad, screaming and desperate, after what Gi-hun told him to his face; Sang-Woo screams at him, pleading "Gi-hun hyung!" Letting us see how, under all that desperate attitude and willingness to do ANYTHING to get that money; Gi-hun is still someone he respects deeply and someone he fears comfronting.

Maybe he gave Ali the money to get on the bus because deep down there is some empathy there. Felt so bad for Kang Sae-byeok, I thought she was cut and couldn't work out at first why she was walking to slow, when I saw that blood at first after the glass shattered and the 3 of them started walking I said to my daughter whose hurt, someone's bleeding badly, maybe it's all of them as they all got a little cut from the glass, but thought Cho Sang-woo only got a little cut to the face, then when I saw what was in her in that bathroom, I knew it was over for her as she'd bleed to death if she didn't die in the next game because these people behind the game aren't going to offer her help or assistance. Then Cho Sang-woo pulled a dirty and killed her. Like you guys I thought he was acting falling asleep dropping the knife and expected him to stab my man Seong Gi-Hun when his back was turned, but then that twist happened and he killed the girl instead. She's done amazing though considering she's a model and this was her first film EVER, I would never have thought it, thought she was a seasoned actor. Once again, great reaction guys.

Unpopular opinion but ppl keep saying Sangwoo is selfish. But lets face it, Gihun is just as selfish if not more. Yea Sangwoo got Ali killed, but so did Gihun, he cheated the oldman and pretty much got him killed too. Reflect back to episode 1 and 2, Gihun pretty much steals from his mother to gamble. Cancelled his mothers insurance for his own benefits. Abandon his wife and daugther and even borrowed money from loan sharks. How is all that not selfish? Sometimes you dont have to use the knife on someone to be selfish. I dont want to spoil for episode 9, but after watching that, Gihun is way more selfish than Songwoo. Just think about it.

Gi has charisma. He shows remorse. That’s the fundamental reason why both selfish characters are perceived different. I criticize Gi in ep 1 -2 and 9 lol. He’s cringe when dealing with real life. But in the game he’s easy to feel for.

In all honesty, I think Sangwoo tried not to hurt his friend, but if it came to him or his friend he'd save himself. Like in the cookie game, he wanted to warn him. In the choose partners game, he chose Ali, yes probably because he thought Ali was a stronger partner than Gi-hun but also I think in case he had to face off, he'd rather not have to hurt his old friend. He's smart enough to have guessed that was a possibility. I think he could have attacked either one when Gi-hun was banging on the door but he chose the girl because he really doesn't want to hurt his friend. He WILL, if it comes down to him or me. But I think he's trying every way to avoid it.

No. He killed her because she was a weak and easy victim. He was a coward who only thought about himself.

I stand by his action here if he didn't kill her the other two could have had a majority vote to stop the game and no one would have won money. She wouldn't have survived the trip to the hospital anyway and it would have made all those other people die for nothing.

So for the bit on why he gave Ali money for the bus I figure in a sane world Sanwoo is not a bad person. But he acts with his head not his heart. If something bothers him or if he feels bad, it doesn't matter. He'll shut that emotion out because in the end he can't reason out not making the smart move. Very different from Gi whose is emotional at all times and doesn't think ahead. We've seen Gi do many shady acts at this point but his motivation always stems his heart not his head.

Woo was the best character. He reminded me of lelouch since he plays dirty and is cunning af. Y’all wanna be soft from a viewers perspective, but gi-hun only got that far cause he’s the mc cause otherwise he was way too nice 🤷🏽♂️.
@carmelcity95273 жыл бұрын
Agreed. There is a reason people keep discussing or arguing about him the most. He’s a well rounded character and even though he does heinous things, we understand why because that was shown to us early on. Love him or hate him he’s one of the most interesting characters. I can hate that he betrayed Ali because Ali was so nice and didn’t deserve that, but I can also acknowledge Sang-Woo is well written and acted.

I think Sangwoo took Saeybook out. Besides the obvious self-preservation, it was more due to a mix of mercy and removing the main threat as they're wounded(she's always shown to mirror his decisions and positions, is willing to go above and beyond like he does and has been open about it while he operated behind a front). The rules leaves it open for the majority to stop the games(meaning if all 3 were left, Sangwoo might not be able to recoup his mothers life/livelihood were Gi-Hun and Saeybook to out vote him ending the game) and those eliminated next of kin would receive the rewards, not his mother.
@Goombario373 жыл бұрын
he would have done it whether she was wounded or not
@jonathanjohnson67273 жыл бұрын
@@Goombario37 well imo, she's always been the most prepared. Its doubtful you'd get the drop on someone like her in better condition. She does pickpocket as an everyday means for survival, with heavy implications she has traversed/experienced/adapted the most. Escaping NK and working with and then getting away from Deok-Su(out in real life)
