I mean tbf it's just logical that he shouldn't win (and this is cold, and I would never be defending this view outside of a tv show - but it's true). He's about to leave this earth anyway. It would objectively be wasted on him, as opposed to everyone else who still has the rest of their lives. If there can only be one winner (and to be fair, the games never actually SAY there can only be one, just that you get more prize money if there is), I don't think they ever actually wanted it to be him over the other main characters who have families and loved ones.

3:01:48 - He’s NOT right, though. That’s the entire point of the show. Despite desperation & their own lives at stake, some people still have enough empathy to do the right thing regardless of a cash prize. Ali saved Gi-hun, Ji-yeong gave her life to save Sae-byeok, Sae-byeok convinced Gi-hun not to kill Sang-woo, Gi-hun befriended the old man out of compassion rather than strategy. Sang-woo played the game as ruthlessly as possible, but still ended up in the same place he was before the game: suicidal & consumed by guilt. Gi-hun wins the money, but doesn’t spend it b/c it’s blood money. He nearly killed his childhood best friend for it. The money that turned his best friend into a manipulative monster. Plus, money won’t bring his mom back to life or fix his relationship with his daughter. Money won’t take away all the horrific things he saw or the things he learned. Not spending the money was his own way of sticking it to the gamemakers. And in the very end, he decides to try dismantling the game from the inside out. A metaphor for dismantling the systems of oppression that turn good people into greedy, self-serving individualists instead of collective, compassionate equals.
@fisticuffs12Ай бұрын
that's interesting because to me sangwoo being suicidal read differently. like he had already given up and was ready to traumatise himself and destroy any humanity he had left to win, so his mom would be fine. dead man walking type of thing. he was clearly disturbed by the things he did but since he had single-minded purpose he could keep going. and he had been in finance and understood how the game is played, it didn't shock him because that's what he studied into. he was the result of learning how the world the VIPs made works, and i don't think saying he was wrong encapsulates what that all means
@LordofFullmetal20 сағат бұрын
Sorry, I agree with most of what you said - but I hate the "money doesn't fix anything" argument, because the only people who say that are people who have never had to worry about having enough of it. Money might not bring his mum back - but it sure would've prevented her from dying. She left the hospital because she needed to work. She would've stayed otherwise. And yes, a better financial situation WOULD have fixed his relationship with his daughter to some extent. He didn't have much contact with her because her mother saw him as a deadbeat, which was mostly because he couldn't support her. Sang-Woo was s-icidal BECAUSE of money issues. Money fixes a LOT of problems - but that's really hard to understand unless you've been in poverty and seen it for yourself. And to prove my point: Gi-Hun DOES end up spending the money, once he realises it's not helping anyone to just let it sit in an account. You're leaving out the very important moment where he realises not touching the money was a mistake fueled by his trauma.

Also I do think the ending "game" with the homeless man is super interesting, because Gi-Hun did actually lose. He lost because he missed the obvious solution: HE should've gone to help the homeless man. He had all the power in the world to make a positive impact. But he didn't. He stood there waiting for him to die, exactly how the VIPs watch the competitors die. He proved that he's no better than they are. He literally proved Il Nam's point. Someone as kind and loving as Gi-Hun.... And when you give him the power to help others and fix injustices, he won't do it. He would rather let his money rot in a bank account, feeling sorry for himself. That's the real lesson he learns from that scene, and it's why he suddenly starts spending the money.

the sangwoo hate when this series came out was real bc of ali and saebyeok, but i maintain that he is my favorite and the most complex/interesting character on the show. all he wanted was to right his wrongs, save his mother, and was willing to do anything to do it. he played the game and almost lost himself doing it but in the end, he sacrificed himself for his friend and his family. this show is so amazing and i loved your reactions!💗
@TheSofkujepanen3 күн бұрын
I also like him, even though Saebyok was easily my favorite. Because honestly, there was absolutely no way she would have survived the last game, or even survive long enough to make the last game. Like what he did was awful, but it was kill or be killed. I hate when people on their high horses tell us they would never do things like that, even in that situation when they have never even been in a slightly similar position. We all want to survive, even when we’re suicidal, because our brain’s fight or flight kicks in and we will do things we never thought we were capable of. And it’s not like he was doing that out of pure selfishness, he needed to get his mom out of the situation he put her in. But i get some people are never able to like villains/antagonists even when they’re realistic and well written. Like i love Cersei as well, even though she’s an absolute horrible person but i just can’t help loving her. She’s just way too entertaining and i get why she is the way she is. The same way i get why Sang woo is the way he is.

Sang-woo is my favorite in the show honestly. He did a lot of messed up stuff but when I think about him from a character perspective, it’s just so interesting? He really doesn’t think he’s better than anyone and doesn’t actively do harm unless it’s for the game or self preservation. He was kind to Ali despite not having money and talked fine with our mc out of the game, but the second it was about self preservation he did what he thought he had to do, which was fucked but to some degree made sense? Idk it’s just food for thought
@LordofFullmetal19 сағат бұрын
He literally does think he's better than everyone else. That's the whole point of the huge argument he had with Gi-Hun. The first thing he did was resort to childish insults about how Gi-Hun is pathetic and a loser - and Gi-Hun turned right back around with "I can't deny that, but guess what? You're right here with me". Sang-Woo refused to put himself on the same plane as the people he was playing with, because he had been told his whole life he was better than everyone. This golden child who can do no wrong. He fell for the hype and believed what people were telling him, and that's why he thought he deserved to live more than everyone else. That scene was the moment Gi-Hun realised none of it was real. But Sang-Woo didn't have that same epiphany until he was on his death bed. That's the difference between them.

Then just waddle across. Another could be using your shoe. They made them take off the shoes but didn't say they can't hold them. The shoes have no laces but if you took off the jacket you could tie a knot at the end of the sleeve. Slip your shoes inside for weight. Then hold it by the untied sleeve and swing it like a flail towards the glass. Il Nam's goodbye to Gi-Hun makes me tear up every time. Like I know dude is just pretending but still.

@LordofFullmetal19 сағат бұрын
No, he didn't. He didn't have to unalive anyone. The game NEVER said there could only be one winner. It never said that. That was not a rule, and there were so many choices made by the players that could have resulted in more winners. They had so many chances, and they let their greed get in the way until every last one of them died. That's what you're supposed to take from the selfish characters like him and the thug. You're not supposed to agree with them. Because where did it get them, in the end? Not a single one of those characters won.In the end it was the kindest person there who won. All that killing was for NOTHING. Even if you ignore that, he unalived Sae-Byeok out of sheer cruelty. He didn't need to do that. It was no act of mercy like he's pretending, because she wasn't suffering at that point. She had drifted peacefully off to sleep. He made her death more violent than it ever needed to be, for no reason. Even the bridge - if it had gotten to his turn before they ran out of time, do you really think he would've done the right thing and kept guessing? No. He would've done exactly what the thug did, and run out the clock. He was a violent coward.

1:53:01 this was funny because what she said was the equivalent of "honey" or "my dear" which lets us know they're married.. but the English closed captions (captions of the English dub) say "oh boy"

I truly don’t understand what genius decided to translate it that way? Was it just cause Yeobo sounds kinda like oh boy? If so, that’s so fucking dumb💀 Like that one word meant so much in that scene and they replaced it with fucking “oh boy” … Like oh boy, i’m gonna have to kill my spouse, oh boy oh boy.

The main character here was in the new Star Wars Acolyte show as a Jedi, and his character was so calm and tranquil that I barely recognized him!

Absolutely loved watching your reaction. This is great material to debate who to root for, against, etc. First time watching it, Gganbu episode broke me. Really hope Season 2 is a revenge episode.

“I’m sure his time is coming but it can’t come fast enough.” Literally every episode pls get rid of him. Also there’s going to be not just a season 2 but also 3rd
