When it comes to the villains, it’s not just them being criminals, they’re people who weren’t given a chance or had bad upbringings. But this new gen of heroes is changing that, with La Brava, Gentle, and Nagant being proof that there’s redemption for these “villains”. This episode was beautiful. It’s unfortunate Twice couldn’t be saved or that it took so long for Dabi to be finally seen and looked at. I’m glad Toga was finally able to be reached and connected to.

This right here! 🗣️ I'd never read the manga when the show was still at season 3 or 4 so I always wrote the show off as just having a simple good v evil plot. I never thought it would get so grey and realistic with it's morals! Everyone in the League is simply misunderstood or shunned "human beings". People who grew up without family/friends to love them or know how to love them properly, as well as people who grew up with things that are out of their control. Feeling like you're not able to be understood or accepted by anyone can lead you down a pretty dark path in life
@Agent-572 ай бұрын
That is really not the same though. Gentle was basically a anti corporate prankster who harmed no one, I would say he is less of a criminal that most real life youtube Pranksters. Lady Nagant only killed threats to the nation. If that's not heroic, don't know what is. She is no different than what Loid does from Spy X family. She was sent to prison because she snapped and killed her director. Meanwhile LOV villains are actual murderers with innocent blood on hands. Toga can't be saved because it too late, she already killed so many people. Plus she doesn't feel any regret for her actions so I don't consider her saved.
@silvermatter17392 ай бұрын
@@Agent-57I wholeheartedly agree, we can sympathize and understand what caused them to be this way, but we also have to acknowledge that these people have killed and ruined countless of innocent peoples lives and do need to pay the price for that. @@sirmel11 In a basic sense she didn't feel her quirk made her life bad. What made it bad was the way people treated her for it. She was called a deviant and not human because she had a fascination with blood due to her quirk. Something that should have never been THAT much of an issue. Her parents and peers told her not to smile because it looked scary and she spent her entire childhood wearing a metaphorical mask. Eventually, she decided that life was too hard to live, so she became a criminal, and joined the LoV to make it easier. Why doesn't anyone else kiss* the way I do?" She's just a child that doesn't know any better. As a disabled/autistic person, Himiko's backstory hits DIFFERENT for me. Like, with the right support, resources, and people around her just giving enough of a fuck, she could've been FINE at least, or fucking amazing at best like Sheera was pointing out. Her Quirk legitimately gives her an in-universe disability, period, and it needs some sort of accessibility in place for her to have any hope of functioning in their society. But they were far more concerned with "fixing" her than HELPING her. Like, let's really think about it. Even in OUR universe, blood donations have been a thing for ages now, and MHA is set in the near future. There's no reason they couldn't have had a system in place to get her blood to help keep her cravings in check. Then with that, they'd just need to get her an ACTUAL therapist/counselor to helpteach her how to manage her emotions, unlike the one they DID give her, that was basically just like, "Oh, you crazy lil bitch, we need to fix you because you're a freak

We got a bit of a glimpse into Toga's past back in MVA but I'm glad Horikoshi delved a little deeper this time. Once again, a lot of the parents in this series kinda suck. And this also says a lot not just about the parents but about the quirk counseling system and hero society at large. Rather than trying to provide Toga with a healthy alternative or teaching her that just because she has a quirk relating to blood doesn't define her, they instead lean into the stereotype that we've seen ever since Shinso was introduced. People with quirks that are seen as "scary" or "villainous" are treated like villains. Called freaks or subhuman. The quirk counseling only tried to convert Toga into being "normal" and her parents called her inhuman. There was no attempt to help. There was only forced conversion. And because of a lack of support, she eventually became the monster they accused her of being. I see people talking about how, "Oh. Just because they have a sad backstory doesn't justify their actions". And, obviously. Their backstory is to show how they got their mindset. Not to say that they're right. However, that doesn't mean that the message they're asking is wrong. That's what Horikoshi is trying to convey. That's what Nagant's entire character is about when she first appeared. To ask the question, "After the heroes defeat the villains, what next?" If the answer is that everything goes back to the way it was, then they failed. They didn't learn anything. More Toga's, Toya's and Tenko's will be created. The system currently in place is one that rejects people who look different, people who think different, and people with quirks that are considered to be "villainous". Even if the heroes defeat the villains of today, unless they change the system in place, they will actively be creating the villains of tomorrow. And in that sense, unless there is true change, there can be no victory. And I think this all ties back to Twice's line in the Overhaul arc. "I may be a villain, but I'm still human". These people were treated as less than human in some instances. And only by acknowledging all of their qualities, both good and bad can the human inside of them be understood. Ochako was able to find the source of Toga's pain. Her parents and those around her called her less than human. An anomaly. They said her smile was creepy and sickening. Ochako saw that same smile, that same person. And she said Toga was the cutest in the whole world and that she's willing to spend the rest of her life giving her blood. Ochako knows that blood is the way Toga feels and expresses love. For Deku. For Stain. For Ochako herself. And she showed Toga she was willing to accept all of her love. Ochako succeeded in saving a villain.

Beautifully put. Have you read the ending? Do you think true change in the system was brought ? If so how?

Had there been a proper support structure, it could have been as simple as getting a supply of blood from a blood bank which are pretty’s normal in our world. I really loved this episode, not just the OST and the visuals but just how Toga’s tragic character reflects reality. Not just in the MHA universe where many people are already failed from birth , but how it can correspond to our society, and those battling mental illnesses. Many people walk this earth with an altered brain chemistry and are casted away from society- I mean how many of us can accept a child that likes to drink blood? I like how Ochaco , instead of asking Toga to be normal, decided to speak in her language. @Kaempfdog2 ай бұрын
This episode shocked me in the manga. I had decided in my head I knew where the Toga battle was going, and then these chapters came and COMPLETELY threw everything I thought through a loop. Not only was this beyond anything I tried to predict, but it changed the entire dang character for both Toga and Uraraka that perfectly explained the characters. A character that freaked me out but didn't really have much to write home about, and one I genuinely didn't think was possible for me to enjoy more as my 2nd favorite character right behind Izuku Midoriya. Sad Man's Death Parade continues as Toga looks at Touya go down from a distance. Losing yet another person that actually "supported" her. (He cares more than he lets on, but Touya always makes it confusing regardless.) Spare a thought for Horikoshi hand drawing a gajillion Twice duplicates. I seem to recall these chapters being shorter if they had wide shots of the Twice cluster. For obvious reasons. And now this unending, expanding cluster is essentially becoming a monster that reaches and swallows. Jiro, Tsu, and Uraraka caught in no time flat. They get past Pixie-Bob's Earthflow which was their only way to contain the copy storm. But once it got up and over, it could now be expanded to the fullest with no Dabi fire or earth walls stopping it even if it's happening in OTHER places too. Now squashing these heroes is harder than it looks because you can only have so many people on top of you in this situation before their weight is placed on something else rather than the person beneath them, and I don't think the Twice clones breathe oxygen with how they disappear so there might be more air in this area now with Dabi gone easier. That and these characters survive ENORMOUS explosions with little effort, and have crazy durability feats. So there's still hope as overwhelming as all of this is. Uraraka sees Toga looking at the Dabi field and knows it has to be her with all the other duplicates trying to trample the heroes. Which...doesn't match. So her head is completely elsewhere. Uraraka starts actually putting together Toga's mindset knowing how she has thought about affection all this time must be at a genuine shock it's not what she originally thought with her love of Twice not being enough. Uraraka has given genuine thought to Toga's thought process and how events would make her feel based on what she knows about her. The more she sees, the more she knows it's not just a giant ball of crazy and there is emotional logic. Hate and love don't mix. And obsession confuses. Uraraka wants to see what is actually underneath all of this. And with that want, comes empathy. Uraraka is evolving HER emotional understanding as well, and is using more strategies to empathize. Even under high stress, even with the threat of death repeating, even with her friends in danger it's not that she doesn't ignore the danger of her friends, she just doesn't forget ANY of the things she wants. There's a lot of people in pain, but that doesn't bar Toga from that list. And solving HER pain is the best way out. Uraraka is getting more and more advanced with her empath strategies. More and more of Toga's past comes out. One can assume she didn't get help or was beyond it. But they DID get her help. The HELP was the messed up one. Saying something is wrong and assuming everyone knows it is not the same as explaining WHY something is wrong. She is drawn to use her quirk because of her affection, and they just say let's purge this side of who you are. Not to cope, not how to apply, just get rid of it. Seems simple considering what she's drawn to but your quirk and your personality are connected. So it's just such a stupid thing to ask of this little girl who has no comprehension of it all. It's true her desire for blood and her desire for affection are not ENTIRELY one to one. (how can she receive love if everyone she loves dies when she displays?) But it's literally telling her not to love by telling her this. And it's all she wants. And there are many unique displays of love but they also find their uses for SOMEONE. There's compromise with application. She isn't WRONG for wanting love, she literally can't receive. It's a vicious cycle that she can't escape. It's getting harder and harder to see Himiko Toga because she is devoting harder and harder to her hatred. To confuse the heroes as she was confused. Taking on their many forms and stepping further from what she wants in the process. Teamwork is harder, but the further and further she goes, she has less and less. Toga has no one. She has no one to turn to, and no part of herself shows through this hatred. And even with Uraraka trying to be there for her, she doesn't even believe it. Her Reinfield's syndrome is blocking us from seeing genuine abandonment. And Uraraka gets stabbed. Toga needs no identification for herself, she knows what she wants and who she wants to be. She doesn't need a new villain name because she is who she is and won't hide. The other villains changed their names because they evolved into something new. And in a way depending on their paths it hides who they were. Who they are is all that matters and it locks in the time they want to be seen as. Shigaraki respects that but also doesn't need it for himself. He has been a constant. (Even though Tenko is gone so it still applies. He and AFO worked through that identification. Part of why Shigaraki has such a strong sense of self in fact. Which keeps him alive and in command within AFS for now.) For Toga they accept her constant. You want love and you want blood. Seek it out and you be you. No pity, no shame, just go forward and you can stick with us as you look. And now that the heroes are here, they are taking everything away from her. So she is trying to maintain herself and what she has/had. And so long as she is a constant, she can't be taken away from who she is. So then the question is simply this for Uraraka. Who are you? Tell me. This rampage gets more and more terrifying as with every passing second, the doubling doubles in speed. You can see her from miles away and we see so many that literally can't defend themselves from her. Hawks only has his blade and has to defend Tokoyami. Iida has burst engines and can't stand up after his double turbo. And the Todoroki's gave everything to just be together. They put everything that they are on the line and are now all lying in heaps. We've seen them from top down and know their passions well. And the giant swarm of Toga is essentially saying, "What about me?" Uraraka knows it's her own personal drive that keeps her here for Toga. She wants people to smile. And she couldn't understand Toga's happiness. Her obsession. Who she is. But does that mean that she can't exist? Does that mean she can't be happy? Is there a way for her problems to be resolved too or is there no way to coexist? You being so happy when you rarely get to be is still a good thing. So how do we meet in the middle? She wants EVERYONE'S problems to float away. And with that, we FINALLY get something I was prepared for. Uraraka's quirk evolution. Her weight limit is non-existent as she keeps going in one direction. So she doesn't get her vertigo recoil, and she refuses to harm and spin everything out when she has the ability to ground everything and turn everything upside-down as well. She can control gravity, but she just wants to take the weight off of EVERYONE. Just like Shigaraki's 5 finger touch, she can spread, and she creates an atmosphere where things work on HER rules. And she has the full understanding to make it so. (still doesn't take away the many other gravity breaking rules she has and demonstrates, she laughs at physics) And to float away Toga's problems? She offers her blood. Telling her you need love too. You need happiness too. Here's mine. I love my parents and wanted them to live better. I love people and want them safe. I love Izuku Midoriya the boy who showed me selflessness and passion to another level. And you need love, so I'll love you too. So you can have yourself and your peace for yourself. Toga sees it at last, and tells her what she thinks. How people wouldn't let her love. How she couldn't smile. And while the league gets brought down, Uraraka says but I'm still here. I see your smile. I see your love. And its still beautiful like everyone else's. You're human. And because you have so much, that makes your love even more beautiful. Seeing Toga's Past really is tragic. Imagine hearing you are a monster from everyone, but especially your parents, every single day. That is what you call self-fulfilling prophecy. I watched another KZbinr talk about the application of quirks and the Idea that Toga could ahve been a world renowed actress. Imagine her ability to change into a role. And as long as no one made it weird, It would just mean they'd draw some blood from someone, check how much she needs for how long and voila, let's go.

If you think about it, Toga‘s situation is a bit similar to Shinso‘s. They were both always told that their quirks are something villainous; literal parts of their being that make them "bad people" by default in many people‘s eyes. The difference is: Toga was pressured to "be normal", while Shinso could just not use his quirk to appear "normal". The pressure eventually made Toga snap and made her the monster everyone always saw her as. The things Toga has done are unforgivable, but if all it takes to save potential future victims - and maybe even start to heal her broken psyche - is a compliment, why not at least try?
@Anon-qp3kt2 ай бұрын
As a parent, how do you even begin to digest the fact that your kid goes around killing small animals and sucking other kids blood? You say some nice things but in reality, you’d avoid a kid like that like the plague. Shinso’s quirk looks villainous but the kid himself is sane, he doesn’t go around manipulating people. Toga acts on it which is the entire problem, this isn’t some introvert trying to hide a quirk, this is a kid going around cutting people to suck their blood then says she loves them. How do you even start?

It all boils down to Nature versus Nurture. The problem with quirk society is that it actually is not ready to do what's necessary for people that really deviates from their own evolved "norm" ,despite knowing these off putting differences are literally caused by their quirks. How did you get so evolved biologically speaking as a society yet still lags so profoundly behind in the psychological aspects. Ochaco hit the nail on the head "my quirk isn't made to hurt people" and some of these kids just sit there like " that's nice, my hands disintegrate everything they touch or I have a biological need to drain blood" and neither parents nor professionals knows what to do about these children that manifest disturbing quirks and prefer to treat them as self-realizing prophecies of super villains. The tragedy lies in wondering if in a better and kinder world, could kids like Shigaraki, Toga, and even Toya could have had a chance at not turning into bloodthirsty killing machines. Now they can only hope all that death and suffering will lead to true changes in the quirk society.

I love how quickly they were able to build up and then break down Toga's character within the span of a this finao interaction. There were hints and slivers delivered along the way that alluded to the way she felt and why, but i didnt GET it until this one, where she was outcast due to something she really had no control over, and she defected from a society that refused to accept the kind of person she was, and didnt allow her to live her life, laugh, and, most of all, smile. Uraraka saw that, and just like Deku, was desperate to touch her heart and save someone who was in a time of need. I also love the showcasing of their ego and selfish desires taking precedence over all else, and Ochako talking about seeing Toga's smile not only meant a lot to her specifically, but that she was jealous and wanted to know more. Ochako started by thinking Toga was some heartless monster, but ofc the showcase of sadness showed a real girl under all the "crazy," and i just love everything that went into the writing of this

I don't remember who everyone pointed to, but shigaraki pointed to dabi, dabi pointed back at shigaraki, spinner pointed to dabi, and toga was pointing towards herself :(. How I would probably summarize this is as follows, Uraraka grew up with a quirk that she's decided will be used for uplifting people and lightening their burdens. It only makes sense that her Quirk awakening was to lift ALL of Toga's insecurities, every Sad Man at that Death Parade. I love her to pieces for seeing the true "human" I guess I would say, in Toga. Because of that, Toga was finally able to just be herself and talk about things "normal" girls her age talk about and made a friend who fought for her. Jin's quirk leaving her system as she accepted Uraraka's reality, truly sends the message that, "She's not a threat right now and may never be again."

Normally I laugh at how unhinged Roshi is with wanting to take people out but I'm with him on this one. @Inokoily2 ай бұрын
killing toga wouldn’t ‘save’ her though, what saved her was the talk no jutsu. Just having someone (outside the league who are already rejects of society) accept her was enough. The sad thing about Toga is that she was born that way and instead of teaching her ways to love that aren't harmful they just basically told her she wasn't allowed to love at all (because clearly her quirk was strongly based on love; including the blood drinking). Like imagine being told your entire life that you just aren't allowed to love at all. And it's clear she would've been happy to live as a good member of society if anyone taught her how; but nobody did. They just didn't want her to be their problem.

@@Anon-qp3kt She never killed anyone until she snapped (which happened only a year before the events of this episode, though I'd have to double check). Very clearly she felt the exact same feelings of love as anyone else, but they would manifest most strongly in situations involving blood. And the next episode shows it, but there are, in fact, ways for her to love in a healthy way, but literally nobody ever gave her the chance until Uraraka.
@samuelclayhills32982 ай бұрын
Even if she didn't kill any animals she was still basically kissing their corpses witch aint exactly normal. Toga was clearly too young to really understand consent so if nothing was done she would eventually bite someone to suck their blood and she would still be ostrocised and seen as a monster. This is at best a bad analogy for conversion therapy exept since Togas sexuality comes at the expense of others its inherently harmful and should be repressed. Sure she needed stronger meds but I honestly can't fault Togas parents at all. This isn't a Endeavour or Kotaro situation where the abuse was systematic or simply lashing out here it was a response to actually dangerous behaviour witch would not and should not be accepted even in our world.

Ochako admitting that she came to like Deku was a result of her pushing away her feelings and focusing on being a real hero. To save Toga, she had to be straight forward and open with her feelings, otherwise that would’ve gone against her entire character. Saying that this relationship and outcome was random is entirely wrong, as Togas character was made for Ochako. It’s about her growth as a hero and human being, and she wouldn’t have been able to do any of that without Toga.

Toga is such an amazing character and has an equally justifiable reason to become a villain as dabi or as shigaraki and I feel like way too many people don't understand that. She's a character thatd relate to real world disablities, real world sexualities, everything under that umbrella. She was born into the world with certain thoughts she thought it was normal, as someone with a disablity having a learning defect and thinking thats normal, or someone whos a guy that likes another guy, they don't know why they think the way they do, but they do. Then imagine while these people were being raised they realized others didn't think nor feel the way they do. What a good parent would do they would teach them reasons why they're different but also show them how they still are equally as lovable as the next guy, toga's parents didn't do that and now this is where she ended up.
