At first, I was hesitant on how they would handle Frank still being alive in the show as that dramatically changes Bill’s narrative purpose. After watching this episode, I have to say that they re-contextualized how Bill fits into the narrative in a way that I think works just as well. I think it’s another example of a well thought out deviation from the game that dug into the characters a little more, while also still serving the main characters’ arcs. Quite lovely episode. R.I.P. It was more meaningful for Bill and Frank to be married to one another since Gay Marriage wasn't legalized until 2004 (which in the show, the end of the world started in 2003) so it might seem like just a random "I want to be married before I die", but it had A LOT more meaning to them. As a little fun fact, the shirt Joel wears after the shower was Franks, which is the shirt that Joel mostly wears throughout the game (though it's plain green plaid rather than the green red plaid mixture in the show...still nice they put attention to details and explained how he got it).

I have a theory that Joel's watch, was first broken when he lost his wife (Sarah's mom) in an accident or so. That's why he wasn't going to get it fix by himself, that's why Sarah said it and there was weight in her words, why Joel's "thank you" also has a lot of weight. But idk I may be really wrong...
@justinryan8490 Жыл бұрын
I like how they changed things this episode, but I didn't really get why until the letter at the end. The difference in medium needed the change. In the game, at least character wise, Bill is a foil for Joel. He's self sufficent and capable but also distant, miserable and alone. He's also a means of giving you new game mechanics and a brief follower. But since it's a show that's not gonna feature hours of watching them walking through town fighting Infected they hyper focused on his character. The choice to change him from being just a foil for Joel to be a mirror of Joel that confronts him with his own future choices. The choice to have connections and love in his life and purpose from that even if it's terrifying. Joel currently has no connections with anyone since Tess died (and even they weren't as close as Tess wished) with only the hope of reconnecting with his estranged brother keeping going for now. And after losing so much will he be able to take the risk connecting with anyone and being happy, if the fear of losing them, like so many others, might too much to bear to even try.

I cried once every 15 minutes this entire episode. This is one of the most beautiful and emotionally powerful episodes of tv I’ve ever seen. This felt like a movie that I guarantee would be on every critic’s shortlist for best picture at the Oscars. Neil Druckman said in the BTS video after the episode that he and Craig Mazin had this philosophy on the show was “when should we deviate and when should we come back, if it’s kinda the same or worse then they stay (completely faithful to the game), if it’s better we deviate”. I’m SO DAMN HAPPY THEY DEVIATED! And I’m so happy that it ended with them dying together instead of Bill just forever living alone like in the game. Also I loved the Mortal Kombat 2 cameo. And of course Ellie’s favorite character would be Mileena. Tragically yesterday Annie Wershing who played Tess in the game passed away at 45 due to cancer. So when they showed the flashback with Tess and Joel I cried. Rest In Peace Annie Wershing. Thank you so much for that opening tribute!❤❤

I get it though. Because in the game, they need to feed us action so that our goblin gamer brains don't get bored watching cutscenes all day. But in a film, they need to make action scenes more rare so that it actually feels dangerous and tense.

@@kb-ww1uw They are failing at making the show seem tense. It’s episode three and we got a perfect Hallmark movie love story.

@@Dustyphoto915 ion know I feel like that’s purely subjective. The scenes especially in the museum against the clickers were fairly intense to me

The actor who played Bill is Nick Offerman. I highly suggest you check out Parks and Recreation. It’s a comedy that he was a similar character in that aired on NBC.

So in the game you find a letter from Bill on franks body, in the letter their relationship is alluded to

I love that they swerved us with the people about to get ganked and instead said "nah, we can break your heart with just 2"

One of the more sad deaths I've watched. At least they both felt fulfilled. Frank obviously followed all the 12 rules of life. He was an antidote to chaos.

13:01 I am a retired police officer and was in the military (Army). It is NOT sensible to engage in a shootout without the protection of cover!!! It is NOT sensible to stand out in the open, completely exposed, while engaging in armed conflict, especially when you are not wearing protective clothing, such as a ballistic vest/shield/helmet, etc. That is suicide. Two top things to do when you are engaged in a shootout- 1- seek cover, and 2- seek an exit strategy in case you are overcome by the enemy. But I guess they wanted the "drama" effect in the show.

Crazy cause in the game it was guns blazing in the school and our first interaction with a bloater. Frank also hung himself after he left Bill because he said Bill was a horrible person. I like this change this time. It was unpredictable.

I remember Bill being on that time too loolllll he was serious in both versions

Honestly, this ep was so emotional, the only disconnect I could understand would be the gay oh I cant relate one but even so they sowed it so well into the show. If you cant sympathize with the characters this ep you need to evaluate your life.

haha when Lupa said they changed the story becuz they were going over budget! But seriously, the change is actually so good as it is foreshadowing the dynamic between Joel and Ellie's relationship

The 10 miles conversation cracks me up. Hell as a Boston native, the imagery of mountains that close to Boston cracks me up. Boston isn't very big, a lot of what is considered "Boston" is places like Cambridge and Newton. Basically, they were still in Waltham at that point, not in the freaken wilderness.

I just finished this episode and I'm still emotional... I really loved this episode and how they showed what love can give you and where it can take you (if you accept it) in such a messed up world. Beautiful. Really thought we'd get more of Bill & Frank. I really liked them.

I saw that the budget is about 10mil an episode - grain of salt. If true the scenes definitely show they've spared no expense.

The way Bella said “So don’t blame me for something that isn’t my fault” with a quiet anger, like she’s sick of it. Makes you feel bad for her, when a more loud anger would have made me angry for her.
