The misconception is that this was a tragic end. This is the only true happy ending we will probably see in the show. They got to go out together, happy and on their own terms.

For real- they grew old together and died peacefully in their sleep. That's as happy an ending as any of us could get.

In this version, Bill and Frank got 16 happy years together. In an apocalypse, that is unheard of. Having an ending so fueled by their love for one another is just the cherry on top. They died feeling safe and loved. 💜 Their ending was beautiful, not tragic.

They got years of happiness together, and they got to leave on their own terms. There were more good days than there were bad ones. And to me, I think that's more than enough. The love was there, however short on the cosmic scale, but it WAS there. And that's the important bit.

the point of the series is to show us the beauty of nature and the human soul despite a horrible apocalypse. A lot of people will complain that they skipped two chapters in the game for this but i think this was an incredible alteration of the material that made Bill way better as a person. What made this episode so brilliant for me were the subtle details: The almost shot for shot remake of their first meal together, followed by the reveal that Bill now sits next to Frank. The placement of Frank's paintings, visible as Joel and Ellie enter the house. The realization that Bill placed and planned everything for Joel to find prior to his final dinner with Frank. That Bill and Frank marry each other next to the piano where they shared their first kiss. The pain Frank feels as Bill wheels him over the threshold. And the one that murdered me the most: after establishing, in the night raid, that their bedroom is upstairs, it is revealed that due to Frank's illness, they'd moved into the downstairs bedroom. All of the memories that took place up those stairs, and Bill was happy as long as he was in the same room as Frank. This was truly one of the most beautifully acted, written, directed, and shot episodes of television I've seen in life.

When you say "marriage equality never became a thing in this world" you probably mean in the US. Same-sex marriage was legalized at least in a couple of European countries by this time. I always feel like noting that since the outbreak happened in 2003, federal same sex marriage that came in 2015 never happened in this world, yet this show still managed to give us a story of two older gay men falling in love and living a full life together and getting to make choices on their own terms in a world where suffering is the default. It’s so powerful.
@__-fm5qv

I also like how they treated a gay relationship as just that, a relationship. Normally in TV and media they like to hammer home the fact they're gay so much they forget to actually build the characters and relationships. Here, it's just two guys that fall in love and build a life together, it really is that simple. And it's one of the most genuine and moving romantic stories I've seen in a while as a result!

In older houses, especially ones built in the country if you have the windows open and one door closes it'll create a draft. That's why the door to the bedroom closed when the front door did. It was a brilliant stylistic choice, knowing that Bill and Frank are dead inside there, it was almost as if it were Bill and Frank saying, "No, Joel. You don't want to see this." Fucking BRILLIANT. I could write a paper on this episode alone.

Pretty sure he said in the note that he closed and locked the door, so don’t come in. The whole point was to close that room off and leave the window opened so the house wouldn’t smell to high heaven of death. Leaving it open until they came wouldn’t really help much if at all even with windows open because you never know the directions the wind will blow.

This felt like a movie that I guarantee would be on every critic’s shortlist for best picture at the Oscars. I cried once every 15 minutes this entire episode. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful and emotionally powerful episodes of tv I’ve ever seen. Neil Druckman said in the BTS video after the episode that he and Craig Mazin had this philosophy on the show was “when should we deviate and when should we come back, if it’s kinda the same or worse then they stay (completely faithful to the game), if it’s better we deviate”. I’m SO DAMN HAPPY THEY DEVIATED! And I’m so happy that it ended with them dying together instead of Bill just forever bitter and living alone like in the game. Also I loved the Mortal Kombat 2 cameo. And of course Ellie’s favorite character would be Mileena. Tragically yesterday Annie Wershing who played Tess in the game passed away at 45 due to cancer. So when they showed the flashback with Tess and Joel I cried. Rest In Peace Annie Wershing.❤❤

This was beautiful. It truly shows the human condition in its full glory. Definitely the most emotional episode of tv in a long time. HBO has been killing it. Viserys climbing the throne in HOTD too….

Adam’s reaction to that disturbing transition shot of the baby’s clothes lying in the bone pile to the flashback sequence of the same baby being comforted by its mother was exactly what I was thinking. I’m not mad they included it by any means, in fact I really appreciate the fact that they’re willing to go to that length, it makes it feel very very real. It’s just that I have a little niece and newborn nephew and I just hated seeing it.

I've been loving to watch big grown men crying, sobbing like kids because an episode (a MASTERPIECE, I mean) like this is making men see themselves how is a 'man's love'. Put every gender you want; it DOESN'T FUCKN MATTER! IT'S LOVE! At the end of the world, we still can have a chance to be human beings with this LIVE UP on play; love. Great reaction, guys. I hate you because I'm crying again! 😂🤣 Cheers!

I know so many people are still moronically h0m0ph0bic nowadays and can’t understand why they’d introduced two gay characters into a backstory that has ‘nothing to do with the game” but those same people also fail to understand how even if there was an apocalypse GAY PEOPLE WOULD STILL BE PART OF IT REGARDLESS and not to mention just as much as people complain about homosexual scenes I can do just as much and MORE complaining about boring heterosexual scenes so idk why this episode got so much hate. However, THANK YOU GUYS for being so open as USUAL and to share some more light and personal opinion, I really loved how this episode focused on an emotional love story between two OLDER GAY men which we don not see much depiction of as much as younger generations of LGBTQ+ rep when it comes to television. So, this was a TYPE of divine love story we do not get to see much as. I loved this episode and I’m gonna keep defending it by every thread on my sweater. I even read that Bill was already gay in the game anyways so idk why people are so mad when Ellie even found a GAY P0RN magazine in Bill’s house and took it with her …. Bill was obviously a CLOSETED GAY MAN and even referred to Frank as his “PARTNER” which is also used at times for gay people to refer to their lovers …the show didn’t change anything but ADDED A MORE VIVID storyline to Bill and Frank’s own backstory. Thanks for reacting to it and not being so biased or hateful because truly it’s astonishing how people think we’re supposed to care if they "dropped this show' after ONE episode displaying affection and compassion between two people in an apocalypse for crying out loud. It was a MOVING story of showing how not everything in an apocalypse show has to be so intense ALL THE TIME because there are some people who WILL and HAVE lived their last days only loving each other away from everyone else bc no one else matters at that moment.

Linda. But yes, the callbacks in the episode were very touching. I had the same thing when the last meal Bill prepared for them was the same as the first meal they had together, and the same wine. It had meaning and it's because we feel like we've been with them the entire 16 years of their relationship.

So many people have determined the majority of this episode was about a "gay couple." I disagree. To me, it was about two individuals living for a long, long time without human touch. They both simply wanted to FEEL something--to touch another human, to hold another human, and to feel love. I believe they did fall in love; that was apparent. I just believe all the "hate" this episode received was given by people who don't have a clue what real love incorporates.

Oof the 80s = trouble for a queer couple was not the double whammy I needed before my morning coffee. In fact, all the little things in this episode hit harder when seen through an LGBT lens. An elder gay man handing down his weapon to a younger lesbian. Two middle aged gay men having a life together for almost two decades, getting married, and dying at home in each others arms. Especially for Frank, considering the double trauma of not only watching all his friends die during the AIDS epidemic but also the outbreak and having his QZ be overrun. They lived the dream and the gays won!

There's an uproar over this episode all over the internet. Which tells me, people don't want quality, they want samey. If it doesn't walk or quack like The Walking Dead (which is mostly a mindless zombie show, at least after the first few seasons) and so people don't understand the show because it doesn't have zombie fights every 3 minutes. I am a HUGE fan of the game, beat it on 3 different systems. Although the Bill story is very different than in the game, this is WAY more poetic and just hits you with beautiful symbolism oozing out of every scene. Neil Druckmann himself said that, when figuring out what to change and what to leave, if they think the change make it better, they will change the story. I've payed the video game enough, I don't need a carbon copy as a show as well. As long as the main themes are there and the important relationship moments between Joel and Ellie are there, then I'm down with whatever creative license they take with this IP.

You don’t get this back story. Plus you see the flip side - where Bill doesn’t open up, alienates Frank and ends up angry, bitter and alone. A cautionary tale to warn Joel of what he would become if he continued to wall himself off. This was the positive side where Joel sees how he absolutely needs to open himself and be the loving/protector/father. It shows what it is that is worth fighting for - love IS the purpose.
