Keep in mind, (as per shown in this episode and/or the next), the individual efforts of everyone in each class counts towards the progression of the overall class, which then dictates the given points. Its hard to get back the points you lost, but not impossible. Think of it like a hive mind where each class is its own individual "society". As for points, there are class points and private points. Basically private points are everyone's own points that are calculated through the total value of the class points. All students in the show are normal people with a variety range of skills and backgrounds, some are balanced (Chiaki, Ichinose or Hashimoto), while others are genius only in some stuffs (Sudo or Yukimura), a very few are truly gifted (Koenji), and the irregulars (Ayanokouji). Some are slowpokes, shy, grumpy, sociable, psychos, borely-normal, morally gray, justice lovers, otakus, delinquents, bookworms, etc. They are all diverse, and it's intended like that by the school to make a perfect sample of society. They must learn how to work and cooperate in real-life based challenges, which is the reason why the evaluation system is not explained to them, since in an actual society nobody will tell you the rules, you have to figure it out on your own.
