They didn't include it in the show, but I feel it's important to mention that in the actual DND show not only did they take all of Umbrasyl's gold and give it back to the people of Westruun, but they also wrote on the wall in draconic "one down" with Umbrasyl's blood in case any of the other dragons came to check on him. Badass.

I can understand why they didn't keep the "one down" part because it would have been a very weird turn to dark during what was otherwise a lighthearted and hopeful scene. If they had kept it I think they could have made it work if Ripley was the one to write it in an attempt to make it look like Vox Machina did it and anger the dragons against them.

The series paints the characters as much more traditionally heroic than the game. The same notes are there, but in season one they sort of blanket forgive Percy because he was being influenced. In the game he really was a ruthless bastard.

It's kind of fascinating, because historically (in the sense of literature), dragons guarded golden objects, not gold itself. The golden apples of Athena, the Golden Fleece the Argonauts were after, etc. The word dragon itself come from the Greek "draconta", which means "to watch", to guard. From ancient beast that guarded precious golden items to giant dragons who guarded treasures of more economic and symbolic wealth, to dragons using gold for more natural, animal instinctive, reasons (Flight of Dragons), dragons have always symbolized the sacrifice and inherent unfairness required in achieving great wealth.

I might be misremembering, but don't dragons in D&D literally require gold to ascend to the outer planes when they die, that's why they'll go to ludicrous lengths to reclaim a hoard & why ghost dragons exist (& this is compounded by the fact that you don't need to return the exact same hoard to a ghost dragon - just wealth of equal value) - a dragon's hoard disappears with it on its natural death, it's a sacrificial offering. Dragons who don't have a large enough hoard cannot ascend.

Ah yes, the classic dilemma when fighting a dragon: in its lair where it has home-field advantage and who knows how many artifacts and traps to utilize against the party, or out in the open where a dragon's aerial advantage combined with its breath weapon allows it to make bombing runs while staying out of the party's range

Umbrasyl isn’t the weakest dragon, he just happened to be the one they encountered first. The sword, Mythcarver, is made from magical metal that can resonate with a bards music, which is why it made that huge attack. Depending on the continuity in D&D, gold has magical properties, which is why Thordack wanted it.

Also, the first season was Percy focused because Taliesin was the most experienced player and gave Matt the most fleshed out backstory to plan an arc around. Most of the other cast were new players so their backstories were more vague so they got resolved in other arcs.

Well now I can reveal some things about dragons in the world. For anyone who doesn't know dnd and wants a bit of dragon lore Im gonna explain general info, and will not be talking about anything important to the story. Dragons are all incredibly intelligent. Even a baby dragon has an intelligence close to genius level. Dragons age like fine wine. Reaching adult by 500 or more years, and ancient at 1000+. They only get stronger with age and will not die from old age. All of the chroma conclave other than Brimscythe from the first season are ancient dragons. Dragon color Breakdown: Dragons are split into 2 categories. Evil chromatic dragons, and good metallic dragons. Gem dragons do not exist in exandria. Red Dragons are pride incarnate. They believe every blade of grass: every gold, silver, or copper piece; and every gem under every mountain belongs to them. Every. Single. Red dragon believes this. Their pride comes from the fact they are the most powerful of all chromatic dragons. Thordak is a Red Dragon. Green dragons are cunning personified. Scheming and vengeful, green dragons are the most intelligent of the chromatics and show it through their ability to topple nations through infiltration and subterfuge. They are generally considered to be the 3rd or 4th most powerful of the chromatic dragons. Raishon is a Green Dragon. Blue dragons are beyond Kardashian levels of vain. Each one believes they are perfect and better than every other dragon out there. There isnt much else to them. They are the 2nd strongest of the chromatic dragons. Brimscythe would have been a serious problem if he was older. Black dragons are the MOST evil of all chromatics and by far the most cruel. A black dragon would rather torture their enemy than kill them. Umbrasyl's title is the "Hope Devourer" solidifies this notion. They are the 4th strongest of the 5 chromatic dragons. They also tend to be cowards, running from any fight they don't believe they can win 100%. White dragons are basically beasts. Yes all dragons are intelligent, but the white dragon least of all. They are primal and vengeful. Holding grudges their entire lives. They are also the weakest of all dragons period including the metallic counterparts. In fact, if you are strong enough, you could literally beat a white dragon into being your slave. They often get taken advantage of by other dragons due to their weakness. Vorugal is a white dragon.

The vestiges can't ALL see each other, only mythcarver can see all of the others, it's how umbrasyl saw them in the cave and how scanlan saw the other vestiges before Also, about the spells running out thing with pike, spellcasters in DND only get so many spells per day before they have to rest otherwise they would probably be too OP. They have different levels of spells they can use but the stronger the spell (9th level being the strongest), the fewer times they can use it per rest

So now that you finished season 2, I wanna say that a really cool detail y’all might notice if y’all ever rewatch in your own time or remember some of the foreshadowing (beyond brimscythe being the obvious foreshadowing plot point) is just some of the details in his lair. Like some might not suspect krieg to BE the dragon vs just working w it, more like a fanboy or something. There’s another pretty obvious clue on a rewatch is the shot of his rug/carpet. It depicts all 5 members of the conclave arranged around a center ring. Season one really did a LOT of setup that first time viewers might not have (many/potentially most who never watched the original campaign)

A bit late to this, but to explain the constant "everlight don't fail me now" moments with Pike's magic not working, its because in D&D you have a limited number of times you can cast spells at certain strengths per day, so you can't just always heal away all wounds in the game. This has to be somehow translated into the show without game-ifying it too much.

3:10 fun fact about this moment for anyone who likes to hyperanalyze fantasy logic like i do, growing bigger would actually make the fall _way_ worse. The rationale is that he would be spreading the impact over a wider area, so he wouldn't get hurt as badly. But in actual fact, the increased momentum he would have from being a heavier body would _far_ outweight that benefit. surface area increases as a function of length squared, while volume is length cubed - if he's growing taller by 2 feet, his surface area is increasing by at least 4 square feet, and his volume by at least 8 cubic feet. that's why this principle is called the square-cube law in biology. in other words, it's literally true that the bigger you are, the harder you will fall.

An old enough dragon (1200+ years) with a large enough hoard can become an immortal super-dragon called a greatwyrm with power approaching that of a god. That's why Thordak needs the gold, he's making a play for divinity. EDIT:No spoilers, btw, I haven't actually seen the livestream of the campaign. I just remembered that's a thing from the DnD lore.

bossfights often happen on the monster or baddie's home turf, in this case a lair. in DnD high enough level monsters get lair actions in such circumstances... which means that the environment reacts to the boss being in a fight by either defending him or attacking the intruders... it could be something as pedestrian as traps that set off on command, or lava spouting from a volcano or anything else thematically appropriate. the vestiges, on the other hand, have various levels of potency... they unlock as the players level up or as they do something appropriately heroic or thematically relevant to the vestige... so Vax unlocked the wings on his vestige by accepting the Matron of Ravens completely and putting his live in her hands, Scanlan activated Mythcarver both with his choice to stand and fight and with his bardic abilities (mytcharver is particularly well suited for bards and once belonged to a hero called the White Duke, which is a homage to David Bowie)

Not just dragons, *red* dragons. And despite how these Dragons get along, generally Chromatics *hate* each other *more* than the rest of the races (which they view as lesser) and about the same amount they hate metallic (Good) Dragons. Also Red Dragons are generally more powerful than the rest of the Chromatics. They grow larger and more physically imposing. They're basically all of the best traits of the other Chromatics combined. What's really funny (And completely unrelated to Vox Machina) is that there is another creature that *even* the most Ancient of dragons fear, called a Tarrasque. *That* thing is basically D&D Godzilla.

@@AmyLee-kf4fx did you even watch the first campaign? You seem like one of those people that watched M9 first. Multiple arcs were never finished or never had an arc. Multiple characters were dull and boring as fuck. The only improvement M9 had was that Marisha was far better at the table because she no longer needed to remember spells. Sam's personality was completely neutered the whole campaign. Liam was even more emo and duller somehow. Talison halfway through the campaign do to no fault of his own went from interesting to maybe the most boring character of all 3 campaigns competing with only Yasha and Caleb which somehow meant the 3 worst characters were in 1 season. Laura and Travis did their best to carry the campaign but 2 people out of 7 being interesting is not going to turn out well. Literally the only interesting part of the campaign was traveler con outside of that it was completely boring.

Also to answer some of your questions with no spoilers I have only watched up to the end of season 2. Some forms of Magic cost gold to cast, so it looks like he is trying to use the gold to speed up the dragon hatching and maturing processes, as dragons don't die from old age they just get stronger. Also as for Kleith being the mvp you should probably expect more of that, as casters usually get way more overpowered compared to close combat fighters at higher levels, to give an example of a high level spell which players can cast one is called wish and it fucking grants a wish, or let's you use a lower level spell of any class. Also for theories I think the reason why the dragons are teaming up and trying to make so much more, is because there are things that could challenge them like the gods and the titans and the whispered one and stuff like that.

Typical cleric really, always out of spell slots because the party leans on them to heal and maintain the group even, especially the way cleric magic works in 5E now, even though clerics can be devastating front line combatants. First item every cleric in DnD should find is a few staves of healing, so they can use their spell slots for all the other kinds of spells they can choose from. Or sacrifice a portion of your share of the treasure to let the party buy their own forms of healing or load up on scrolls from your temple or make them yourself once you get high enough level.

Mythcarver is a bard weapon, and in its exalted form, it grants the bearer four melee attacks at the cost of a point of exhaustion. It's a magical effect, well represented here. Green dragons are the smartest of the chromatics, and Raishan has learned enough wizardry to hide her true nature, among other things... The only thing more dangerous than the strongest dragon, is the smartest dragon.

This whole episode was exhausting in the absolute best way possible! Whenever the heroes of any fantasy story fight a dragon it should ALWAYS be grueling and epic, true final boss shit, and the final fight left me floored. And the final moment of Scanlan finally using his balls for something other than sex and getting the courage to attack Umbrasyl had me actually shouting and cheering for him. It sucks that we have to wait another whole year to see what might be the conclusion of this saga, but it will be worth the wait. Also my plan for taking out Umbrasyl in the cave would’ve been to first have someone get rid of the dragons ability to fly by going after the wings, not by targeting the base of his wings but by making a single deep slash into the webbing of their wings, just like what Kratos did to the Baldur’s dragon in God Of War. Then lure the dragon into a smaller part of the cave and have the heavy hitters like Grog and Keyleth attack the ceiling of the cave causing a cave in to both damage and even incapacitate the dragon. After that Umbrasyl will be angry enough that he will keep trying to use his acid spit over and over while they use the newly dropped boulders as cover, then when he is between attacks do what Scalan did and go for the eyes. Then just keep chipping away at the weak points until it’s dead.

We don't actually know for sure, its not something from the game! The main theories are it is replacing one of two spells: Scanlans Magnificent Mansion which opens a portal to a house that looks however you want, with enough food for a banquet and a bunch of servants (Scanlans bit from the intro might take place there, as he flys on his hand singing down a hallway, the decor looks right and his audience isn't real people just pink magical looking figures). The other thing it could be is the Gate spell, opens a portal to any plane for a minute, and you can force a being on the other side to be drawn through it, if you know their name.
