I think the creators created Mako and intended him to be the crowd favorite, as a tribute to the original Iroh voice actor. They tried to make him level headed but imperfect and relatable, but it went wrong in season 1. He was the only character who had it together in season 2, but he was still with Korra so that's tainted. He was a really good character in season 3 and 4 but people still disliked him cause of the relationship stuff. I think that's why his cousin was like "sometimes you try so hard to please everyone that you disappoint everyone". I think that was a meta comment on Mako because it was the clip episode and they were talking about Mako's relationship troubles.

I really like TLOK for the most part but I definitely feel like them not going deeper into Asami and the brothers in terms of their past and their characters as a whole was a pretty big missed opportunity

But they just didn't do enough with them.

I’m going to say something controversial: Korra as an Avatar/protagonist was more interesting than Aang. What made ATLA was not Aang for me, it was the side characters, Zuko, Azula, Iroh, Toph etc. What made Korra were the villains, and how difficult they were, and complex. What makes this world so amazing is not the avatar, but who they surround themselves with or how they deal with their enemies. I’ve seen so much bashing on Korra for season 2, but if we had to choose between the definite death of Aang’s grandchild or the possibility of saving her after saving the world (which she did, thanks to choosing Jinora) could we make that decision? I love ATLA, but I also love TLK, because it faces issues we as people often face. I was just watching some rants against Korra so it led to this 😅

These guys are quick to call korra trash for getting paralyzed and captured the second she woke up from deep sleep but forget when aang got caught by archers and had to get rescued by his enemy. korra literallly defeated vaatu single handedly until unaloq striked her from behind which led to the chain of events of losing the avatars and they called her trash for that but i seem to remember aang getting struck by Azula in the back in the avatar state and actually died if it wasnt for plot water and katara but nobody saying aang is trash for that even though majority of the fight azula and zuko were manhandling him one at a time. The double standards with these series

It's really mainly Lupa doing it, and I would say he's pretty tame compared to others who hate on Korra. Yeah, I don't think Lupa hates her like that, but was hurt for what happened in S2.

It's quite common in the Avatar discourse. Aang makes mistakes or comes across odds stacked against his favor, "Oh cool story writing. What a neat and flawed character." Korra stumbles a bit or gets realistically taken off guard, "What a trash avatar. She doesn't do anything right. This story is random and not written well." It's very frustrating when criticisms are boiled down to angry opinions devoid of any substance or nuance but get taken as fact.

@Scorpio Bradley There's not really that big a difference between the ages of 12 and 17, like you're still an immature child/teen at both ages. Besides, Korra, unlike Aang was sheltered away for her entire life, she didn't get to interact with people as much as Aang did. Sheltered people have almost everything done for them, being sheltered away tends to make people make bad or illogical decisions cause they don't know how to do it on their own.
