I think milk of the poppy is like opium it dulls pain but is addictive the mountain uses it a lot to deal with the headaches he gets due to his gigantism think morphine
@PenTheMighty2 жыл бұрын
It is opium. Milk of the poppy is just the liquid form. It was common as a medicinal painkiller for thousands of years and yes, people got addicted to it. Marcus Aurelius, the roman emperor, was a massive poppy fiend. Being as wealthy and powerful as he was though, he never was short of the stuff, so it didn't really show like addiction does these days. Thing is, milk of the poppy isn't as strong as refined opium that is smoked, or heroin, which is even stronger and has a more intense high. In the archaeological record, there are many sites where archaeologists find piles of bones, wood, or some kind ornate stone pipe laced with traces of petrified opium. Not wanting to touch that hot potato, you have to dig to find this information. It's like how when they found Pompeii and discovered all the brothels with their lewd artwork on the walls (so foreigners who couldn't speak Greek or Latin could just point for what they wanted from the prostitutes. They actually avoided taking tours in those sites for quite some time and would just show the architectural beautiful buildings or the preserved bodies. Opium was more popular than marijuana; curiously enough, weed was smoked, inhaled in a kind of incense burner, or put in food and seen as a purely medicinal herb. Opium was where it was at, for recreation or easing the pain of illness or injury. It also shaped a lot of human history in subtle and overt ways. The Opium wars of China still affect the West's relationship with China to this very day and influences a lot of the antagonism that now currently exists between the US and China, with the potential for WWIII. The much more intense and addictive fentanyl is wreaking havoc across the US and elsewhere, causing civil unrest, societal unease, and calls for radical action. Opium still shapes our world to this day. The study of the simple poppy plant leads down a rabbit hole, with stories of healing, madness, indescribable pain, the triumph of the human spirit, and the greed of men.
@Sage0fThiccPaths2 жыл бұрын
It is. It's explained in the books that it's created using poppy aka opium and then mixed with milk and honey. I've always gotten the impression it's effects are similar to that of Codeine or Oxy because of how delirious the user gets. Still not as bad/crazy as the psychedelic drink Shade of the Evening, which is the elixir that Dany drank when she visited the House of the Undying and had her visions and in the books, Euron Greyjoy is seemingly addicted to it (from the Euron chapter that was released for Winds of Winter years ago, poor man got absolutely butchered by his TV adaptation)

At least that how I took it as well. Ironically enough, the King just undid all his good work at uniting the realm, and put Alicent back on the path of war.
@atkim1222 жыл бұрын
Yup. Alicent wouldn’t recognize details of the song of ice and fire because Viserys never told her. That prophecy is only meant for the current king to pass it on to his heir, so only Rhaenyra ever knew. Alicent just focused on a few key words like Aegon, prince, promised, unite the realm (not against white walkers but the lords of Westeros who will rebel against any female ruler). Earlier this episode she was ready to give up on Aegon because he’s such a disappointment, especially after the *ape, and I think she meant it when she told Rhaenyra she’d make a good queen. But misinterpreting Visery’s last words will now make her think she has the king’s mandate to make Aegon king.

@@Christrulesall2 Nah. It's opium. And it's not medieval, we still get opioids from poppies cultivated in the Golden Triangle and Golden Crescent regions. The flowering portion of the plant is cut and a milk-like sap is collected and dried. The dried, crystalline residue is opium. One of the main components of opium is morphine. Jace and Luke doesn't have Velaryon's blood, but they were legitimate. Laenor raised them as his own and loved them and they have the name. Just as an adoptive father. And Vaemond's problem with bloodline went down, because their son would have Velaryon's blood regardless, since the boys are to marry Laena's daugthers, Baela and Rhaena
@cheapPixel2 жыл бұрын
Technically, they're not legitimate because even though they were raised as Laenor's sons, they were still bastards, and they were obviously so. Coryls and Laenor would've needed to legitimize them, but that would be admitting that they're not biologically Velaryons.

Laenor did not official adopt the boys he pretended to be their father, therefore the boys are still legally illegitimate. Both Vaemond and the Hightowers have the right to be upset with them

This is old, but if anyone is wondering. Milk of the poppy, refers to the poppy plant, which is used in medicine to create drugs like morphine, oxycodone, opium, and yes, heroin. Milk of the poppy in the ASOIAF universe is used as a painkiller, but the characters also know how bad and addicting it is, and that’s why Daemon is worried about it being given to his brother.

While Vaemond is correct that Jace and Luke are bastards, Lord Corlys has pretty explicitly said he doesn’t care and is passing Driftmark to them. As he’s a second son, Driftmark should go to Laena’s children/their spouses before him anyway. He has no real claim. Also, a lord can appoint anyone they want to be heir. Doesn’t have to be blood-related and legally Luke is.

@@REChronic54 It's not really like that tbh. Line of succession in Westeros passes down the male line. It goes Trueborn sons > Trueborn daughters > bastards. So basically, with everyone thinking Ser Laenor dead, Vaemond is technically the rightful heir to the throne. Luke has no right to the title of Lord of Driftmark which is what he would be. That's the issue. The male line of house velaryon would lose their rightful holdings It's basically the exact same as the Stannis being the rightful king while Joffrey has no legit claim to the throne.
@REChronic542 жыл бұрын
@@DillsyYourDaddy67 You’re right. But I guess you can argue about the philosophical view of it. I loved the reactions. Especially that you all caught about how deep Viserys's love in for not only family but his daughter. You don't get a lot in shows / movies, but a good father's love is just as deep as a good mother's love. I cried that whole scene KNOWING he was so far gone with Leprosy, in pain and near death yet the strength of his love for his daughter and her asking for his help proved that a good dad no matter how far gone will aid his daughter. A father's love is a father's love. Just as there is no love like a mother for her son. There is no love like a father for his daughter. The look his daughter gave him as he glanced at her broke me. The admiration and thankfulness pour out of her expression. That is all a dad needs. Daemon helping his brother shows yes. He loves his brother. For the first time him seeing his brother so broken was the first time he even stumbled with words at sight of his brother. Daemon never loses it, but you could see in his expression and face that he truly hurt from his brother's condition.

What i find *so* interesting about the throne room scene is how everyone seems to assume the absolute worst from Alicent all the time. God forbid she's actually worried that man's gonna hurt himself on the way to the throne, god forbid she's worried about the man she's *still* being the care-taker for - sentiment illustrated by her immediately rushing to him and calling for help when he collapsed in his chair (since apparently her facial expressions are too hard to read). She literally isn't this unhinged heartless villain that does shit unprovoked that people want her to be; i almost wish she was, that way her character's reception would at least make some type of sense Talking about "a father's gonna defend his daughter" and "blood over everything" even though that literally only applies to 1 out of like 6 of his family members (maybe 2).
