I think the concept of the afterlife just being this black void that goes on forever and is only occasionally shifted when people communicate with the spirits is honestly terrifying. More than any of the jumpscares in the movie. Spending years, decades, an endless amount of time potentially just existing and having no sense of self. No light. Nothing. Unless someone very rarely decides to communicate with you is wild.

Yeah that was never her mom at all. It was the drowning lady from the very beginning pretending to be her mom. Remember, they didn't get the hand off her in time so she was able to inhabit her body. If you notice every time they show the "mom", her face is melting more and more to show her real appearance. This also explains why you said you heard the drowning sound when she spoke to her “mom” in the bedroom. Also she didn't throw herself at the end. Jade actually pushed her to save Riley. @@Darshe0 The directors themselves say to go in slow frame by frame to find the truths of the movie. And if you do go to that scene frame by frame, you see (from behind the windshield) Jade running up behind Mia and shoving. However, I do think that Mia willingly *let* herself be pushed. I don't believe someone is strong enough to fight this horrifying power of the hand to throw themselves into traffic, same as she couldn't fight stabbing her own father, or that guy stabbing his brother. But I do think she had enough strength at that last moment to let go of the wheelchair when she realizes the truth of the drowned woman's/"mom's" words. She knew Jade was behind her from all the shouting, and she lets go of the wheelchair just in time to get shoved instead of Riley. At least that's what I tell myself to feel better about Jade pushing her, lol!

I would definitely say she threw herself into traffic... not her being pushed. A couple of KZbinrs made this movie on a $4 million dollar budget and it made $70 million dollars at the box office. I love to see projects like this make it big. This movie is a better drug PSA than most actual PSA's. Mia is grieving, finds a drug that takes away the pain however briefly and she gets addicted to it. It starts to ruin her life and hurt her friends and instead of abandoning the drug she starts relying on it more and more until it takes her life. Her lying to the moms face " i know you wouldnt do anything to hurt him" when she is planning to stab Riley in the next few minutes is clear as fucking day parallel to how drug addicts treat the people who love them.

The saddest moment is when you realize at the end Mia realized it wasn't her mom and was gonna stop and get better, but Jade pushed her. If you pause it you can see it. That's why she's so confused, she realized she was being tricked and stopped then suddenly she's in the hospital dead. Explanation: Her mom was never there. The first ghost, the drowned woman, got into her, and because they went over time she was able to "haunt" her a bit, and also taking some of her memories, which they explained in the movie. It uses those memories to mimic the mom. However, a human body naturally expels spirits over time, so the drowned ghost slowly lost power and her "mom" slowly warped into the drowned lady. At the end, when she tells Mia they'll have Riley forever is when she realizes it, so in a moment of clarity she lets go and decides to not do it... but Jade pushes her. The spirits are in purgatory, or somewhere in between, and it's never explained quite why they want people to get stuck there, but it's implied people stay stuck there in a forever darkness just going insane until some medium summons them out, so they'll do anything to get out even for a bit, and maybe having a new person go in is some sort of stimuli from the chaos. So that's all they are, stuck there in infinite chaos and nothingness, until someone lights up a candle and summons them, and now Mia is stuck there too.

@jwhite-1471 Saying "impossible" in a movie where a ghost is haunting someone isn't the right way to go. As much as Mia sacrificing herself might feel better, it's not the truth, you can literally google, "Did Jade push mia" and you'll see the actual creators saying Jade got there in time to save her brother. It's a tragic ending because she had just realized she was tricked and might have changed her mind. Like I said, you can literally pause the scene and see Jade get RIGHT behind mia, and then her arms go straight. This is not an arguable thing, it's a fact. They blurred it a little so it's hard to see, but you can look it up. She was pushed.

Let's be fair to Mia Grief is a terrible thing. It consumes you. I don't think it's about her not appreciating her father. A common throughline in A24 films is that you NEVER refuse the animal call to action. The rabbit and goats in VVITCH, the seagulls in the lighthouse, the lamb in midsummer, the kangaroo here. I believe it was the mother for real for the moment Lil bro glanced, but everything, after he went beyond the time limit, was the drowned woman. I believe the hand supposedly belonged to a spirit medium. I wonder if the people that can be summoned with the hand are those in purgatory, and being brought back to the light to talk to someone is an opportunity to do something selfless or double down on being a dick. When she let the lil bro go over the time limit it allowed the malicious spirit in. They were telling a story about addiction meeting grief and spiraling someone into oblivion, and much like addiction, it never just impacts the person addicted, it tears through families and friendships. Do yall think she jumps or that the sister pushes her? I really loved the inverted possession, I don't think I've seen anyone play with that concept before.
@IAmHavok Жыл бұрын
I think Mia touching the hand allowed the spirit stuck with her to interfere which led to Riley getting attacked. I agree I think Mia's mom was the initial spirit he saw since the place felt like a purgatory of sorts and the spirits there were either damned by their actions or the others spirits there via the hands interference.

I don’t understand why people are so confused on why she would choose to do it. Like it’s quite obviously peer pressure and the attention while in grief from her mother’s death. She was in a vulnerable spot while being an outcast and the hand provided her an escape and “friends”. After that, she was too far in and being manipulated by the spirits but she sacrifices herself at the end to save Riley. It’s sad that all of that happened to her, she wasn’t getting what she “deserved.”

idk, people react to grief differently, but there are bad coping mechanisms that affect not only the person that is grieving, but everyone around them as well. granted, mia was experimenting paranormal things and hauntings as well, but that was, in fact, the result of fucking around and finding out. the entire debacle with riley and her 'mom' was admittedly mia's (and everyone else's in the room, but moreso mia's) fault. personally, mia was a very unlikeable character to me. i truly understand her struggle with being an outcast and grieving her mother's death, but i really don't understand the lengths in which she went to... talk to her mom? get her mom back? (i don't think that was even possible in this universe, i haven't watched the movie since it came out in theaters, forgive me) there are some things she did outside of the spirits' manipulation that really set me off as well, and it really seemed it was just traits of mia's character. which leads to me feeding into the 'wow she really fucked around and is in the midst of finding out' all in all, i think it really boils down to how to perceive addiction, grieving/loss, and such. and an additional note, mia didn't actually sacrifice herself at the end. she does end up coming to (due to the spirit's dwindling influence) and realizing what she was doing, but at that point it was already too late. jade pushed her into oncoming traffic to save riley, not knowing that mia was 'waking up.'

it’s definitely a movie that parallels teenage drug use and in a way kinda warns you of what could happen if you continue down that path.

This was the first of talks reaction I’ve watched and let me just say it made me an instant fan and instantly subscribed with just talks beginning reaction. That legit was my reaction. Like “WTF DID I JUST WATCH”. This whole movie was so original and so good. The boy part where he messed himself up also had me like “WTF”

Its amazing that rackaracka ,a KZbin channel ,went from doing skits like halo vs call of duty to achieving their dream and making a full length film that also got bought by A24 when they presented it at the Sundance movie festival. Not only that but it got praised by so many prestigious horror movie directors (Directors like Ari Aster, who directed "Hereditary" for example). Like i watched these guys so much growing up. its insane seeing how far they have come.

Imagine believing in a benevolent heaven and a vengeful/monstrous hell. Your placement depends on your values, belief, faith, virtue..etc. After dying you now discover that the afterlife is an infinite void of nothingness and darkness. It doesn't if you were good or evil, righteous or sinful. This purgatory ( or hell really) is where you'll exist forever and inevitably lose your mind and go insane with the only reprieve is when some sucker does a seance/spirit calling. No wonder these spirits are so twisted and malevolent. Learning this life is the only life we'll ever have and afterwards is an existence in an infinite void is just.... there are no words.

absolutely adore this movie .. and yes you are correct on it not being the mama !! it was the bloated drowning woman in the beginning imitating her !! that’s why you hear those water sounds every so often .. also i thought Mia threw herself off aswell my first couple times watching this movie but on like my 4th rewatch i discovered if u pay attention to the left corner when it cuts to inside the car on the road you can see Jade push Mia .. whenever Mia’s mum said “we’ll have him forever”, Mia realizes that she’s being manipulated and let’s go of Riley .. but Jade just wanting to save her brother just pushed her .. anyways loved the reaction !!

I find it intresting that she essentially is in hell and stuck in the abyss and only occasionally see light when people play the game, and the scene were the father was going in the elevator it kinda makes me thinks it's him going to heaven and not stuck in still eternal hell as when the elevator close all the light went off making it seem that all light/heaven is now closed, but that's just what I think😅
