Yachats Oregon Tsunami footage March 11th 2011

The Yachats river mouth is sensitive to subtle changes in tides, so I was able to get some footage of the recent tsunami waves that came from the massive earthquake in Japan. This particular wave occurred about 10:15 AM on Friday March 11th, 2011. As you can see, the tide is rather low, and the entire river mouth floods from the wave, and heads upstream towards the Yachats River. Video taken with a Blackberry Storm 2 9550.
I apologize for the different languages spoken, my wife speaks Spanish!
I have a few more videos with smaller tsunami waves, I'll try to prepare and upload them soon!

Totally! Nothing like Japan but it's still shocking to see the effects of something that happened on the other side of the world affecting this side dramatically!

yup, yachats is safe, the rivermouth is really the only depressed area around...there are a few houses in the traditional flood area, but it's mostly bedrock around the town, and fairly stable hillsides (versus the surrounding area with alot of houses built on sand)

that happens when a tsunami happens so much further away from one beach that after it travels a certain distance it will be like that and when it hits the beach it is smaller that on the beaches on the other side of the ocean or sea

The was good video of the wave from the north side of the bay. It looked like the same one I recorded from my house on the south side.

How did you know that the water wouldn't come up where you were? Or how did you know the water wouldn't cut you off from mainland area?

I was standing on a road at least 20 feet above the rivermouth. There was a steep road just to the east as an easy escape route as well.

Well, if you had been here it at the time that tsunami wave rolled in you probably would have been quite startled. Waves normally don't flow up the rivermouth with such force, so seeing the surge was definitely unique and suprising from my standpoint. I surf the rivermouth regularly, and this wave would have knocked down the average adult and drowned them easily. The wave you see rolling in is at least a 6 foot surge type wave.
