sailing is one of those activities you can never learn enough about. People have been sailing for thousands of years yet it's constantly evolving through materials, engineering, and competition that the next new thing is always around the corner. Lithium batteries and satellite internet are becoming total game changers that could allow more people to roam the seas. Oh and trimarans are fascinating!

Curious the comments of you throttling back when sensible. The beauty of a multihull is that you can sail safely and comfortably running in strong winds. And you can see those waves are quite steep and very close together. (If you want to see a Dragonfly giving it welly, there is great footage on KZbin of a 25 in the Round the Island Race. )

I have been wondering if the Dragon Fly 35 and now the 40 are robust enough for a Tras-Pacific crossing. This video seems to support that. I still wonder how these stunning boats will do in 40-50 knot winds. Not that we going looking for high winds, but in any ocean passage the likely hood of running into storm conditions is high. Thanks for the video. Well done.

Best but about a tri is you can outrun any storm
@larryboles629
@larryboles629 2 жыл бұрын
@@nickstrong7349 Nick, I don't buy into that whole "out run a storm" thing. Regardless of what the speed capibility of any ship/yacht/power boat is, odds are the "sea state" will not allow you to reach "Storm Escape Velocity". My 54' monohull has a hull speed of 9.5 knots. Now because I did not plan my passage correctly, I find myself in 45 knt winds on the nose, cross current of 3 knt, seas 2 mtr and building.....How fast can I go? When you find yourself in a situation that you must out run a storm you fucked up long before that! With todays chart-plotters, weather prediciton, sat-com and the ability to sync this all together you should never find yourself in the positition of having to out run anything other than a mean exwife. The best way to out run a storm is to avoid the situation. Remember brother with sea and ships there is only one thing a sailor can 100% control. That is the time you leave the dock. "Unload these sails make more room for whiskey down here, we got enough of this nautical stuff we need room for liquor and beer."
@Paul_C
@Paul_C 2 жыл бұрын
@@larryboles629 you know that planning a trip is a question of what a boat can do, how is maintenance was, where you are going to, and what the next 4 days is expected. Beyond that it is anyone's guess. Poor planning is the worst mistake you can make, regardless of the boat you sail in. So, your comments are null and void. Running from a storm is good seamanship, whatever direction you NEED to flee in. Speed always matters when on the run. You simply don't want to run high to the wind, that is the most dangerous game.

Very NICE boat. Shipping must be horrendously expensive in Europe because I would have thought it would be cheaper and faster to truck the boat down to Portugal and put it in the Atlantic there. They are making a yacht delivery, so they have to be very conservative. Besides it's just a 35 feet cruising tri, and although there are always wild claims of speed for this kind of boats, in reality these cruising boats, with nice amenities, sweet and usable by not very trained people, are not made for speed. Multis must stay light and these boats are far too heavy for normal and evident reasons. Compare that with a medium sized car, comfortable and usable by any driver, with no claims of speed.

When we were speeding up, the tri made 20 knots and more, but in 4-5 m waves became also uncontrollable. It was shooting down the next wave even faster and the steering was lost. So we decided to step down, because we did not want to capsize. If you consider this to be "unseamanlike", we probably don't have the same idea about good seamanship. just imagine, you mess it up, and someone hast to come out in such conditions, to save your ass. @@YachtskipperDe Agree that slowing down and staying in control is wise. Question: could you set a slightly faster trim that allowed you to surf the waves (longer)? Surfing would seem to be the most gentle condition on both hull and sails, in addition to being comfortable and fast. Perhaps the seas were too confused?

I had a trimaran but it was only 24' with a 700hp gas engine, power only no sails and ran in the high 90s balls out. Sponsons were immovable unlike this boat. One 33gal. tank in each sponson plus a 44 gal. tank in the bow. Previous owner raced it but I did not, preferring just to cruise around lakes at 50-90mph. If I was going to sail in the ocean it would be with a trimaran, the best multihull design I have ridden in. How do the sponsons move in and out on the Dragonfly I can't see how they do it. Looks like a great cruise down to Grand Canaria I would have loved to have been on board!
