Adventures of a Lifetime

Adventures of a Lifetime

Күн бұрын

Provisioning for cruising internationally takes weeks of prep, planning, ordering, and stocking. Come see what it takes to get a Nordhavn ready to leave the country...that is if we get out of the boat yard on time...A last minute haul out threatens to ruin our chance of making a weather window across the Gulf Stream. Its getting down to the wire!

This was a really great episode and I think it was the best one yet. I did watch on Tuesday, but didn't have time to comment at that time. So much going on and everyone totally involved. I could really identify with your 'amazing Dad, Mike' when he was pacing while watching the yacht tech team. I would have been doing exactly the same thing! As other have said, I was also wondering about Camo, but watching him, I knew he has well prepared meals. Look forward to the next 'adventure of a lifetime' and I just can't get enough of the monologue. It really grabs me. All the best until next week in the crystal blue waters of the bahamas...

Okay, first, how do you remember where you put all of your provisions🤪? I don’t know if you are even allowed to keep firearms onboard when entering a foreign country, but I remember years ago making the run out of Palm Beach inlet over to West End, Grand Bahama, stopping there for a bit then on around to Freeport. During that run to Freeport, we were actually chased by “pirates”! That’s what they were called back then. Fortunately we had a shotgun on board and captain stood in the cockpit just holding it and they veered off...... Your videos and story telling bring back so many wonderful memories and I’m so excited for you all to have this wonderful adventure and share it with us! Be safe and I’ll eagerly watch what happens next!
@adventures

I have a really good memory but I do forget where a bunch of it is, and I pack the shower bins with similar stuff so we just open up the next one when the one of top is empty and then it’s a surprise to what’s inside haha. Yikes that’s scary! And you are allowed to carry guns aboard you just need to declare them to the port of entry. I’m so glad that the videos can bring back some fond memories 🥰

🤔Seeing you store dry goods in the shower reminded me of touring a German UBoat. 50 men, 25 bunks, 2 bathrooms, and one bathroom was stuffed with provisions so they could not use it until at least midway through the trip.

My in-laws purchased their N62 (Zarpe) last July! Love supporting/helping them (overnight passages & such) similar to you two helping your dad. Haven't officially gotten the invite to quit our day jobs and come aboard full-time, but will be ready for it ;). We also had the pleasure of having yacht tech aboard for some trips. Sir James Knight was especially fun to travel north with on a 3-day passage. Best of luck with Encore! Look for Zarpe out there in The Bahamas - we are hoping to overlap with them around Georgetown in May.

I have a very good memory that is slightly photographic so I do usually have a pretty good idea of where things are, but funny you should mention soy sauce because we honestly spent nearly an hour looking for a bottle of it not too long ago 😆 if I had to do it again I would make some lists for sure. Hi! great video! about the generator and the diesel, Have you guys thought about running solar? with the hard top on the flybridge you could set up a pretty large array and be even more green!
@adventures
@adventures 3 жыл бұрын
We have thought of that and there are some nordhavns that have solar. Unfortunately to add it on is extremely expensive due to having to run all of the lines all through the boat from the very top to the lazarette. It involves taking down headliners and up floor boards and is quite an ordeal. We got a quote to do it and it just didn’t make sense to do it at this time. But maybe in the future!

@jaquigreenlees
@jaquigreenlees 3 жыл бұрын
I think next time you have a big provisioning like this, Costco. getting case lots of the stuff makes life a whole lot easier. 1 case of rotini at 20 pounds of pasta if you spend the dollar extra is 36 - 40 half pound packages. You can even pay a premium and order from a chandelry to have everything delivered directly to your boat. 1 call, 1 bill, no running around but higher cost. Costco will deliver, if you have the boat owned by an llc and get the account in the boat name, but you still pay extra.
@adventures
@adventures 3 жыл бұрын
You are completely right. Definitely would go to Costco for a bunch of it if I had to do it over. There isn’t a Costco near breckenridge (where I shrub lived for years) so I’m not in the habit of going so somehow it totally slipped my mind. Next time that’s my plan though for sure, you are completely right!!
@jaquigreenlees
@jaquigreenlees 3 жыл бұрын
@@adventures yeah, I go into the place similar to Costco, 10 bucks gets you 22 pounds of pasta, but in bulk, 2 large bags in the box, 12 bucks and it's the smaller packages. With provisioning being as costly as fuel pretty much, everything that can save money is worth the effort. locally, never buy produce from the big stores, a small produce shop is about 1/4 the cost. 3 to 4 bucks a pound for tomatoes, 39 cents to 79 cents at this produce shop for them. local knowledge can save you big time money, without sacrificing diet.
@adventures
@adventures 3 жыл бұрын
Knowledge is power that’s for sure! And yes we definitely spend way more money on food than we do fuel which is hilarious since we are a MV, people would never believe how little fuel we really use. Thanks for the tips, much appreciated :)

Wow! It’s incredible how much provisioning and arranging that you did on the boat! You must have a photographic memory, how else could you ever remember where to find things? In that Florida heat, how did your refrigerated meats survive until they were stored on the boat?
@adventures
@adventures 2 жыл бұрын
I do have a slightly photographic memory which definitely helps me remember where I put it! I also pack the bins for a month at a time so I just plan on opening and using one bin per month so that we don’t have to dig through bins to find stuff! Hi Guys - Love the videos, nice to see someone to follow along in a Motorboat vs Sailboat (lots of those on KZbin). Did I calculate this right.. you guys only burned roughly 1500 Gallons coming all the way to N. Palm from Maine? That's incredible! We are on a Riviera 54SY - wishing I got that type of burn... (of course the common speed for us is upward of 26knots vs your 10knots or so - which doesn't help!!!)
@adventures

So glad you enjoy following along on the journey! Yeah it may have even been a little bit less, I think we burned about 1,300 coming all the way down and while living on the hook most of the time also because we pulled into N. Palm with 709 gallons still. And at 10 knots we would be celebrating lol we usually travel at around 7.5 knots. We are a very slow moving machine lol

@adventures

Yeah I should have gone into more detail, we were just so exhausted after all of the traveling and planning and preparing that I didn’t think to explain how I stock and plan the food. There were multiple times I stopped because I lost my train of though. Sleep deprivation hahaha but I try to stack things in our bins for what we will want each month. I don’t just put all the tomato sauce on the bottom, we had 4 or maybe 5 bins stacked in the shower so I planned on each one being what we would need and be running out of each month. Other places I just keep stock piles, but in the bins I keep goodies like beef jerky and candies so that when we open a bin we get a treat lol The thing that really helped me plan was that we spend 6 months on the east coast so I was able to really analyze our eating habits while we were surrounded by grocery stores. I think that was the biggest help otherwise it’s kinda a shot in the dark. Hope that helps for what I didn’t say in the video! Lol

great job with the video and the series. Does the boat have enough power to maneuver when there is a cross current such as can be the case in some marinas or bridges?
@adventures
@adventures 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks glad you are enjoying them and the answer depends on how much current you are fighting. The general answer is no, these boats move slow. If you have a a knot or two you can maneuver through a marina okay, you just can’t rely on the bow and stern thrusters, even the hydraulic ones. They don’t have enough power. We can boat into some strong current as long as the current isn’t running faster than we travel! We time out the tide if there is a strong current and we are going to dock, we learned the hard way one that the current wins with these boats

I wish you would use more proper nautical terms,,, you’re on the ‘hard’, you have ‘stabilizers’ to stabilize boat motion, looks like the ‘ cutless’ bearing was leaking,,, you use a ‘head’, your ‘cabin’ is nice, you would use your ‘flare’ gun to prevent any illegal action against your vessel,,, anyway, just a suggestion,,, enjoy your trip

Gosh, they went all the way back when they did mine so I could have surgery - and had to be very careful. They get to the point that it feels like they're going to perforate the brain covering. Had to have it done for two surgeries. They can do back of the throat, too. Both areas have just as much virus (if you have it). I will not have another one if I can help it. They have injured people doing them. If they had been as aggressive with mine like the woman that did yours, I'd have had a bloody nose. It's getting nuts. Nobody should have to have one of those unless they're symptomatic. Too many false positives. I am so over the C19 stuff - and I'm older so I'm supposedly at risk. I take high dose D3 and Quercetin. Too old to be worried about anything new or "dangerous". Wish they'd let us worry about it. The government is not my babysitter. Sorry about the rant. I just don't like being told what to do. Or them telling anyone else what to do. I know it's an older video, and I hope to God that they will stop this nonsense, but I'm hearing "shutdown" yet again. I will refuse to comply. You have a gorgeous boat - love the Explorer type - they seem more sturdy and safe. Hope your trip went well. I've never even seen the ocean, but I can imagine the peace and quiet that would be possible with no neighbors around like in an apartment building or houses built nearly on top of each other. Again, I hope your trip went well. Wishing you safe travels wherever you go!

And that’s why I’ll never own a boat with a “dripless shaft seal”. Your lucky it was checked. They can catastrophically fail and sink a boat if you don’t have a huge bilge pump. A conventional stuffing box with GTU packing is very low maintenance and gives piece of mind.
@adventures
@adventures 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah this was the first boat my dad has owned with the dripless, it’s a very different setup that’s for sure especially when it comes to repairs underway!
@SkypowerwithKarl
@SkypowerwithKarl 3 жыл бұрын
@@adventures Generally a dripless can’t be repaired underway. The rotor may just need to be moved a bit closer but they normally don’t need much contact pressure. They either just keep leaking which if not allowed to persist long term will make it to repair. Should the seal seize, it can rotate the bellows and shred it. Now it’s allowing a flood in. You should have a response kit , plan and test how to use it. The shaft must be immobilized so the prop can’t windmill and rotate the shaft. A clamp bar or tied down pipe wrench will suffice. A large sheet of rubber (inner tube) that be wrapped around the shaft log/prop shaft to stanch the flood. Large hose clamps and mechanics wire to hold or tighten the rubber. Now you can get back on the wing engine. Make sure your water alarm is working and not too high (early is better). A couple of Rule 4000 bilge pumps and heavy duty float switch(high current) Those pumps need smooth ID ribbed hoses routed as to not siphon. The wiring needs to be properly sized circuit protected and supplied by a battery/power source the will endure. Make sure you test the wing engine by actually powering the boat a while, not just running it. Plan for the worst and it will most likely never happen. I’ve planned for the worst and been able to rendered assistance many times.
@adventures
@adventures 3 жыл бұрын
You would like you would get along very well with my dad! That is a saying he lives by as well. We have many supplies on board but that was a great idea and way to solve a problem underway if needed. i always advise everyone who is going out to sea, especially in the warmer climates, you dont really get a lot of piracy around the UK or EU coastlines, but out at sea near mexico, south america, african and indian coast lines, it is advisable to carry firearms, not everyone out at sea is your friend, there are those who would think nothing of killing you, taking everything of worth from your boat and sinking it, there are those who would kidnap you in certain areas, it is better to have a firearm and never need it than to need one and not have it, my wife is against guns full stop but even she agrees with me on this, she would prefer me to be able to defend us if the need arises, its better to be able to shoot well enough that any vessel trying to rob you thinks better of it than not having anything to shoot with and being an easy target.
