If you love expedition and explorer yachts and have a soft spot for catamarans, then there is a good chance you will like superyacht 'Silver Cloud.'
Although, the technical name for this rather unique and eye-catching vessel is 'Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull', or SWATH, for short.
The design and configuration of the hull on m/y Silver Cloud mean that she has exceptional sea-keeping capabilities in rough seas; a mainstay of any explorer yacht.
And if you have followed my channel for any length of time, then you will know just how much I enjoy rough weather cruising!
So, is this the ultimate catamaran explorer yacht? Let me know what you think in the comments

I think Silver Cloud is a good example of thinking outside the box as a alternative style of yacht and gives more living space with a smaller footprint.

i have been looking for videos of large catamarans in heavy seas. The yacht companies never show anything like that but it is a reality of exploring! I understand that many of the cats are quick enough to avoid the worst of bad storms but I am sure that they still get caught in some pretty gnarly seas - only nothing broadcast!

You make a good point. Ultimately, you cannot outrun every storm so it amazes me that more boatyards don’t show their boats off, ploughing through big seas

I cannot find the video, but a Nordavn video highlights heavy seas with stabilizers, and also shows how the Portuguese bridge protects the helm. IIRC it was a Nordhavn 55 they used.

Look a The engineering channels on the topic .. also rapid offshore service boats and the new generation of cat. hulled sport fishing boats where they use a narrow tunnel to trap air and cushion any slamming a planing hull would face. They also have started using low lift planing foils to reduce drag and cushion the ride in a choppy sea state.

@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 I had a 12m cat and encountered some heavy weather on numerous occasions especially off NZ and the Indian ocean where we hit the tail end of a Cyclone and Africa just North of SA in the Agulus current. Thank God we weren't in a monohull. In seas, in excess of 10m we always felt safe and comfortable. "Never sail to a timetable and never be afraid to turn back"

@@grahamandheidieade2992 Yikes that sounds like a hairy experience... Was it a motor vessel or a sailing 12m . What was the hull constructed from? There are vessels out there that are designed as wave piercing hulls mono and multi hulls. There are even plaining wave piercers. The biggest issue with such designs is how wet the decks are with such designs even in typical storms. You have to design the vessel to effectively be able to function like a submarine and self righting for monohulls becomes a need. Like Thunderchild ... Sea keeping is often traded off for performance or other conveniences or functional requirements. The changes we are seeing in weather and climate patterns I believe are going to force their way through every aspect of our lives. For those that chose to live and travel by sea thats going to feedback into the design of the vessels they use. Simply the environment is becoming more extreme and the incidence and intensity of Squalls and storms more frequent. Ray4sp look on the learning the lines channel they view different vessels. last week they featured an Alaskan built Explorer cat. The NZ and Australians have quite a history of building very tough multihulls powered and Sailing. The growing desire to use hybrid power system s using electric motors for more efficient reliable propulsion means that multihulls have an edge in terms of Solar panel areas and arrangement.

Thank you, this was eye opening! I have always loved working ships, they bring harbours 'alive' unlike cruise ships that just sit there, often blocking the view, looking like floating ugly blocks of flats! Cargo ships, not container ships, fascinate me, since travelling on one to Papua New Guinea years ago. Much more romantic, like an old novel or Bogart movie and things happen. Since those days, although I find the gorgeous floating gin palaces interesting to look at, after examining the decor, and how ultimate wealth all too often equates with ultimate bad taste, they quickly become boring. However, specialist ships like ice breakers, explorers, subs, support vessels etc I find incredibly fascinating and engrossing, because they DO THINGS! So, I like the technical aspects and to see how they deploy them etc. Without a doubt, I would buy a number of such craft. The catamaran surprises me regarding rough seas. I would have thought there could be problems with one hull digging in, so to speak, if side on to a big wave? Also, the underside of the vessel body coming into contact with wave action would surely cause uplift and/or rolling? I am unfamiliar with the secondary (?) underwater hull system? How does this cancel out the two abovementioned problems? Maybe you could shiw drawings/plans or animations that demonstrate how it counteracts these problems? I should think the companies building such craft should supply you with this detail, for a future customer could be watching your channel! cheers and many thanks!

Morning YB. Yes, it's what we call a "Marmite" vessel. You either love it or hate it. Following superyacht videos for years i have never seen a catamaran design. (thank the lord you came along), I think the reason IS because it is a catamaran. How many have you seen? It is suffering from very, very few being out there for enough exposure. We are at a time in the evolution of vessels where monohull design is king, but as we have seen through history, things change. Take the design of the rear of superyachts. We went from "Canoe" stern to "Garage & swim platforms to now tender platforms coming through, (CdM Flexplorer & the one at Pendennis' yard). Catamarans' need to get more sexy and the likes of Sunreef will certainly help. The stability of this type of design is obvious BUT......as much as i like this vessel i have one reservation and that is it's beam. I feel i would be hard pressed to find visitors moorings that would accommodate such width. Another critique i have is its layout. As you know, architecture is about enclosing a space with the right proportions. The main salon on here seems to be too wide with a too low ceiling and for me looks claustrophobic. Rooms also need an intimacy which i felt the Big rooms lack. But as we've said before you and i, if i'm spending this kinda money i'll be customising big time. Off for me breakfast, laters.

Take a look at Metal Shark Yachts - they have a great 48mt recently released with enormous range and speed to outrun most trying weather conditions. They are also releasing a 70+ mt cat. Looking forward to seeing their yachts performing in rough seas. By accident, I came across a video of US Navy intercepting a ship in the Indian ocean and one of the vessels was a cat by this company. No reviews yet on these cats so looking forward to seeing some soon.

Great explorer, but I was a disappointed in the range for such a large store of fuel - but there is the argument that the compromise is a vast amount of space, with other explorer yachts having vast ranges, but much less space. I guess there is no such thing as the perfect ship, just the least compromised for the use-case.

The Australians have a History of Designing and building large luxury cat yatch's and have manufactured them in vietnam. Silver cloud is hugely luxurious but its massive beam brings penalties of drag and windage and its displacement furnished probably penalises its range. I would be interested to see what form of propulsion it uses and see if it was propellor powered what effect fitting new high efficiency props would have ..and a given its huge area modeling what effect a hybrid power system would have.

seas over a certain height must be an issue if the ship doesn't "rise" (although, and this may be my ignorance, the foils on the pontoons may be able to address this?). Also I am not certain why there are 4 struts to the pontoons, wouldn't two long struts be more hydrodynamic?

Does having 2 submarine hulls and thin bulkheads on top decrease water friction? And if the hulls of the submarine were closer to the hull of the yacht, would the friction of the water be the same or greater? Why does the fact that it has a draft of 4 meters limit it for many places, right?

In actual fact there is a website spefically about this vessel in which they describe a world cruise. It seems that in many places they had to anchor off shore owing to her beam and draught.Insuch cases they had to use their 34 ft. Sportfish/Tender (Towed) to get ashore. For me though the biggest drawbacks are both her " comparatively" high fuel consumption and limited range even at a slowish speed of 10 knots.. I guess that I could hypothetically sacrifice one, but not both...?
