Mate, a great first episode! RYA Yachtmaster is tough. The theory ensures you can sail any ocean, any time anywhere. If it was easy it would not be so highly rated around the globe. The practical ensures you as the skipper are competent to manage the boat and crew in all conditions on various boats regardless. If It were easy, anyone could do it. I did mine back in 1983 It was very different then. Cindy did hers in 1996 again a different world. Its great that you are bringing this knowledge and education to folks. Its not all flat seas and bikinis. Fair play to you. Looking forward to your next..... Sail Safe. Ant, Cid & the Pooch crew.

Glad to see you’re back and getting started on the right tack. I don’t care to throw shade at your first episode but I heard a lot of what you are going to do and what you are going to learn but very little of substance. Given this is your initial episode that’s entirely fair. The Yachtmasters certification is an important credential and I hope you will fill us in on the details of the curriculum. If you do please don’t assume we know anything (ok maybe not too basic) cuz as you pointed out, we don’t know what we don’t know. Good luck.

It’s worth mentioning that, although you’re paying for a course through a training school, people can take the theory training online (especially convenient for already experienced sailors, and those who thrive with self-directed study), and then schedule the 2-day practical on your own vessel with a qualified examiner. It’s not necessarily as involved as the specific course you’re taking; however, if one has the means and there’s a reputable training academy around, there are certainly many benefits to the peer to peer learning environment. Cheers 🍻

Oh know ,now you have legal responsibilities. I thought the yacht masters course was longer. When I did my Master 5 , we had to have 900 sea days on commercial craft and some of it could be on pleasure craft but not much. We also had to have log books. Also my Master 5 course was 6 weeks only and all in a class room. Just wondering because I was thinking of doing my yacht Master as well and wanted to know what you have to do or have before you can do the course. By the way, when I received my Master 5, I was made first officer on a 250 t 45 m three masted tall ship .
@sailinginstructor5 жыл бұрын
Thing is that this course has alot of emphasis on the practical side of things. About two weeks of theory crambed into one week and then two weeks of full day sailing everyday and then a two day practical on the water exam. Very intense!

I’ve noticed as this is a training video a few errors with your Captains handling of the vessel and crew,firstly there are no life lines on deck,secondly you don’t wear a harness or PDF for offshore ,can this be rectified or explained?This is an instructional video for ocean going Masters correct?oooops.
@sailinginstructor5 жыл бұрын
Hi Harry - thanks for the observation. This is a training vessel. Secondly We were not offshore and not required to wear PFD’s - Also we were quite skilled sailors and a Offshore Master as an Instructor so in the said conditions if someone were to fall overboard that might just have been a good man overboard real life situation. Also no its not really a training video, merely my experience doing my offshore master ticket. Thanks for commenting. Stef
