Artemis Batis-Miron was born in 1928 in Ioannina, Greece, in which the largest Romaniote Jewish community lived. Her father Iosiph worked in trade, and Artemis and brother Solomon (Makis) studied at Alliance school institutions in the city. In 1943, when Artemis was fifteen years old, the Germans enter Ioannina and took over the city. In August 1943, her father and grandfather were arrested by the Nazis and taken, along with a group of men, to incarceration in Saloniki. Her father was shot and killed on the way, and her grandfather was executed by hanging together with the rest of the men. In March 25, 1944, a roundup for deportation took place in Ioannina, and some 1,870 of the Jews of the city were taken by trucks to a military garage in Larissa, were they were kept in difficult conditions until they were deported by train to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Artemis and her remaining family arrived at the camp on April 11. They underwent selection, and her mother Eftihia and younger brother were sent immediately to the gas chambers. Artemis remained in the camp as a prisoner, along with her relative Elda Levy. The two performed forced labor until January 1945, when they embarked on a death march to the Ravensbrück concentration camp. From there they were transported to the Malkov camp, where they worked in a munitions factory until the end of the war. They were liberated in the Ludwiglust area. From there, they embarked on a journey of several months, passing through five countries before reaching Athens. Artemis moved in with her uncle there, and enrolled at a local high school. In 1946 she and Elda boarded the illegal immigration ship Haviva Reik, destined for Mandatory Palestine. They were transferred to the Atlit detention camp, where they spent several months before moving in with a relative in Jerusalem. For many years, Artemis and Elda delivered testimony at Yad Vashem.

A marvelous and inspiring personal testimony of triumph over evil. I find it heroic in the true sense of the word that so many people who were subjected to such barbaric inhuman subjugation are able to find the strength and revisit those terrible experiences for the good of others learning from them. Of course, nobody "wins" in war but where once people sought to see Judaism in all its forms irradicated, I am pleased to hear the "triumph" of the Jewish families, faith and culture flourishing.

a very brave young lady facing so much tragedy and death and of loss of her mother and family. Artemis had a lot of stamina and grit and a will to endure and to survive, which she did very well, and without the hate and animosity which so many survivors couldn't let go and still carried with them all their lives. A beautiful, upbeat, inspiring lady. Bless her and her positive attitude to forge forward in life, and not to dwell on her tragic life. If Artemis had to keep her mind and body busy all these years so not to dwell on her pain of her families and her tragic past, who can blame her. This was her way of coping until she could come to terms with her past. She had done very well in her life and in living it.
