Excellent tip! I followed your suggestion, and it turns out the Motorola M plug is indeed physically and electronically compatible. This opens up a lot of possibilities for additional speaker mics as well as headsets. Many thanks for the input.

I've added all the recommended accessories except the pouch, lol. It does make a nice little addition to the HT collection. It's working very well as a public safety receiver for my area. I've been very pleased with the speaker mic.

I'm kinda torn apart between FT-65 and FT-60. Would buy 6R but the battery really looks weak and at this point, I do not want to mess with multiple batteries, chargers etc (even thought about buying VX-6 and FT-65 and giving FT-65 to people but god knows how I want to streamline the whole thing, i.e. take only 1 charger for both HTs). Thinking of buying 2 FT-65 and changing antennas to the 8inch Nagoyas you mentioned. Would the distance be comparable between the two (65 and 60)? Is double conversion that much better than a direct one? Want to get a pair for hiking, i.e. hills, thick forests etc and get some real distance. Battery life on paper for FT-65 is really crazy compared to VX-6 and still way better compared to FT-60. I have literally no Idea why they cannot make VX-6 with a decent battery by now.

I just visited Martin Lynch & Son just outside London and bought one male and one female SMA versions of the NA-701, for my FT-70D and FT-65...I see why you like them, both much more pleasant to use than the stock antennas! 73, G0CIQ

Just found your channel about 24 hours ago. I just purchased the FT-60. I'm thinking of getting another as a back up. Also thinking of getting a VX-6. Now I need to figure out some good upgrades for these. Any suggestions that may work for both or just per radio?

I have two fo these now. Great underated radios... Also have the FT2 and 3dr but tend to grab these because they are rugged. My older 65r was made in china. Both radios operate the same, but the unlock code does not work on the chinese version.

I have a commountain microphone r that works with the FT-65R, the same is the "Commountain CSM-02-M1" for anyone interested. I don't think it's better quality than the Yaesu one but it does the job. I have a video about it, but it's in spanish.

Hi! I'm thinking of getting my technician license and starting out with a Yaesu FT -65R. The idea is to set up a base station with the HT using an external mic/speaker and a base antenna for local communication and with the repeaters. Can you tell me if I can operate the FT-65R TX/RX while it is charging in its charging cradle? I read the manual for the device but it doesn't mention it. Likewise, there is no battery eliminator indicated for the FT-65R, and I don't know if the one used for the FT-60 works for the FT-65R either. I imagine that I can operate the radio in the cradle but I am concerned about any stress this may put on the device or the battery, in the event that it is not suitable for operation while charging from the electrical outlet. Thanks for any insight you can give me!

@@nighthawk8764 When in doubt, it's better not to risk it. The best thing is to limit the battery charge to 80%. Lithium batteries have a slow wear curve of up to 80% and a fast wear curve of 80% to up to 100%. Explaining... a load from 0 to 100% generates a complete wear of 1 load cycle. Current batteries survive about 300 full charge cycles, after which they begin to deteriorate more quickly. One way to extend (and a lot) the useful life of the battery is by charging it to only 80%, because, due to the characteristics of these batteries, charging from 0% to 80% will only generate 0.21 wear cycle. That's right, only 1/5 of the wear that would be generated if the load were made up to 100%. In theory, if you always charge your lithium batteries to only 80%, you will multiply their useful life by 5! (Under normal temperature conditions - heat is the enemy of lithium battery life). Another important action is to never let the battery drain its charge, charge it when it is close to 5% (use an estimated usage time if the device does not have a low charge warning). Zeroing the battery charge also shortens its lifespan. Thus, managing the use of a HT so that charging procedures involve charging from 5-10% to 80% tends to multiply your battery life. The IC -V86 has a button on the charger that limits the charge to 80%, a nice feature that makes handling the lithium battery easier. If your device does not have this characteristic, it is possible to charge up to approximately 80% by marking the charging time from 5% to 100% and then charging from low charge to up to 80% of the total time. So even if the HT doesn't have a cable for charging while in use, proper handling, a good spare battery and the car's 12 volt charger can handle most situations. Below is a table with general wear characteristics of a lithium battery at various charging levels. from 0 to 70% - 0.10 wear cycle from 0 to 75% - 0.15 wear cycle from 0 to 78% - 0.18 wear cycle from 0 to 80% - 0.21 wear cycle from 0 to 85% - 0.27 wear cycle from 0 to 90% - 0.42 wear cycle from 0 to 95% - 0.62 wear cycle from 0 to 97% - 0.74% wear cycle from 0 to 100% - 1 wear cycle (ordinary ion batteries have around 300 charge cycles of useful life) Data taken from the Accubatery app for Android and Iphone. 73!!

@@cp300blackout4 I'm guessing the same holds true for cell phone batteries. I usually charge mine when it gets to between 30-40% and I charge to 80-85%. I know there are lots of different Lithium chemistries, but I think 0% to 100% does damage more quickly than more moderate charge and discharge levels on all the chemistries. True?

As far as I know, current lithium batteries all have the same characteristics of wear and useful life, this applies to both the common type of batteries, such as the 18685 type, as well as the flat packs that we use in cell phones and other devices. Wear increases for 3 reasons, fully charging the battery, fully discharging it, and heat. I think that charging from 30% to 80% would be an optimal procedure aiming at a longer battery life. Of course charging at 20%, 10% would still be very good, the biggest question would be how much starting the charging at 30-40% would disturb the use of the device on a daily basis. If it doesn't get in the way of using the device I think it's great. As for the heat, one of the issues that worried me about using the HT while charging is that even cell phones heat up a lot if used while they are being charged, so the same could happen with the HT (as for cell phones, both in conversation and when using heavy apps like YT) so don't use your phone while it's charging, it would avoid overheating and therefore increase its lifespan. My experience with my current phone is pretty positive using the 10-80% charging method, I've had it for 4 years and it still has 80% health (according to the Accubattery app I use - a relative measure that the app uses regarding battery health). That is, the battery does not heat up too much, it charges in normal time (up to 100% if necessary) and lasts the normal expected time (according to the use of the cell phone and applications) All with the original battery!! 73! 👍

Big battery on the UV5R is 3800 mAh. That's the best thing they have going for them. Those batteries last FOREVER.

That is their "commercial" version aimed at radios in the Business Radio Service. The antenna is a dual bander optimized for 155 & 455 Mhz. It's also good for MURS.

I put a nagoya 771 on my 65r and it's no better recieving and transmitting it's worse imo and it didn't work at all on my uv5r. It did come from Amazon and shipped from china but all the markers you look for to determine if it was real or fake showed it's real. Not sure though cause as I say the performance sucked so I went back to my standard rubber duck since it's more convenient for moving around. Might give the Diamond a try at some point.

I would love to see a battery pack that takes AA batteries in case of emergency. I had that with a Vertex HT and used rechargeable Nimh batteries. This was my backup battery so to speak. Also, Amazon just acts as the fulfillment for many items and is not the seller. So items are overpriced by the seller in hopes of piggybacking on the alleged low price reputation. Amazon can be it’s own worst enemy at times!

You could drop the spare battery into the charge cradle while running another battery. Unfortunately, Yaesu still has not produced a battery eliminator kit to run the radio from a power supply. Nor have I been able to locate a 3rd party provider for that part. This is my #1 gripe with this radio. I've spoken directly to several Yaesu reps about this and they seem completely uninterested.

The thing I can’t stand about UV5R is that it doesn’t stand up without daintily placing it on the table. Especially with the big battery. UV88 with it’s 3200mAh battery is the best chinesium budget offering I think. It doesn’t feel as toylike and ridiculous as the Baofeng. Picking up a 65R sooner than later and will be happy as a hog to have that thicc boi chunky battery!
