Yaesu FT-891 Memory Playback Function

How to set up your Yaesu FT-891 for memory playback to call CQ with the push of a button. A very helpful, but hidden setting.

You can set it to repeat by using Beacon Mode, menu 04-04. I am just learning about it, but you can use this to send a reverse beacon to check your propagation.

Appreciate this tutorial. I just activated a park this evening and used the recorded msg for the first time with my heil headset. The playback volume damned near blew my ear drum. Lol. Had to unplug and use the stock mic. I will be changing this setting post haste! 😂

I purchased my ft-891 about a month ago, still running with my tech license so I'm stuck on 10m. But i have tried a few contests and potas but never knew it had a voice recorder!? Thanks for the helpful video can't wait to give this "new to me" feature a try!!

It's hard to go out and call cq without that once you get used to it. Such an underrated feature. 10M had a really nice opening about a week ago. Hopefully you got a chance to make some contacts.

It's one of the most used functions of the radio for me. Calling cq over and over gets old. I much prefer pushing the button and letting the radio do the work.

Kevin OKeefe when you’re in the record screen and have the arrow next to 1, simply long hold whichever ABC button you want to to be on and that will now be the quick function.

Absolutely. I don't think there is a better radio out right now that I would want more than the 891 for portable. The only other one in its category would be the Icom IC-706MKIIG. That radio is an all band radio so if you care about 2 meters and 70cm's that might be one to look at as well. They are both priced about the same.

No clue. Page 23 of the Advanced Manual calls it "Decrementing the Contest Number". "Use this process if the current contest number gets slightly ahead of the actual contact number (in case of a duplicate QSO, for example)". Maybe the radio keeps count of your CW contacts in a contest??? It's in the CW part of the manual so I have no idea.

Thanks for the video "but"...I just can't get mine to record.... I did 5-11 and got the 4th menu to show with Rec Settings. Then I select Mem, push the function button, REC pops up flashing, I then rotate the function knob to Ch1, then key the mic and speak into the mic but the REC keeps flashing unlike yours which stays solid , then I try to play back with the arrow pointing still at CH1 all I get is a quick double beep.... Do I need to purchase a mem/record board to install inside?

I would guess you don't have PB selected. Other than that is sounds like you are doing everything right. Make sure to push the function button again when you are finished to stop the recording.

Figured it out....was missing a "Function Push" after rotating to the CH I wanted to record onto I needed to again push the Function key in again then key down talking into the mic.... Thanks Again for the video... Mike

Should be exactly the same way but with cw mode.

I use the FH-2keypad it’s a lot faster and you don’t have to use the ABC buttons

You just have to highlight in the menu which one you want, and then long press the A, B, or C key.
