Yaesu FT 891 - Safe, Smart Transport for Your Precious Rig

I've been hauling portable ham radio gear around for years now. In this video, I'll show you how I pack my Yaesu FT-891, but sharp viewers will recognize these techniques apply to any portable rig with a mobile form factor.

Nice kit! A Domke wrap is another solution to protect the 891. They’re typically used for photography gear. I use one on my 705.

Just discovered the DOMKE wrap! Works great over the IC-7100 head unit as it is “oddly shaped”. Great addition to the pack, and less than $20!

@@OutdoorsOnTheAir I've got the 19 inch Domke and I know that works for the Yaesu 891, Xiegu G90 with the fan case attached) and my ICOM 705 (in the Peovi cage).

I like your packing method. Pant sleeve is a good idea. Ik myself have a soft(labtop)case for my ft 817. Took it with me on vacation, to Zwitserland, and had a contact with a Canadian station from New Brunswick!

Started out using padded wrap around 891 and tactical shoulder pack. Currently, using Apache hard case for Yaesu 891 and tactical pack for accessories.

We all have different thoughts about best ways to do things I think of my radio gear is expensive somewhat delicate precision electronic equipment I would not just throw my gear in a sack I am not in combat I carry my gear in a well padded pelican case Everything to set up a working station for 80 to 10 meters HF cw qrp/qrpp I am QRP CW and carry one rig one manual tuner one SWR bridge one Key one EFHW for 80 to 10 meters and one SLA battery and patch cables and dc power wires I carry everything I need in one large suitcase type pelican case Each item in its own padded pouch I live in south louisiana and we have very high humidity It not a good practice to seal up the gear in a airtight case or plastic bag I always open everything up and inspect upon return home Another couple items I pack are a flashlight a set of earbuds , pencils and writing paper I treat my gear with respect

Since your bag has PALS webbing: you could have some pouches that could easily attach/detach for modularity. The bag reminds me of the Maxpedition MPB (multi purpose bag)

Sorry, this messenger bag was a Canadian sporting goods chain house brand product and was discontinued last year. But the design is generic enough that you should be able to find a similar one.

My 891 goes in a padded laptop sleeve that then goes into a waterproof EMP/faraday backpack with the rest of the portable station radio gear.

Have you considered a set of rails for 891

I prefer a padded carry case to rails as the rails impede access to the front panel controls, an important consideration for those of us with large fingers.
