Hello operators
Todays topic, the Yaesu FT-891 unboxing. In this video I do an unboxing, go through some of the key features of the Yaesu FT-891, then discuss integration into the solar-powered portable ham radio station.
The Yaesu FT-891 is an excellent mobile or field radio. It has an exwellent receiver, built in filtering, and just a little larger than the Yaesu FT-818. I chose the FT-891 ovwer the FT-857 because of its better screen, superior receiver, and better value. Currently, if you want to put a 100 watt radio out in the field to operate portable, this radio is the most portable, and functional way to achive that.

I just heard another KZbinr talking about the advantages of having a HF ( 180 meters up to 6 meters ) and a dual band 2 meter and 70 cm. Basically, he was saying it keeps you on local and DX communications. Are you of the same philosophy? 73 KE0OAP
@OH8STN
@OH8STN 6 жыл бұрын
Ray Konold honestly for purposeful amateur radio communications I don't think there's any one-size-fits-all philosophy. With that said I do have VHF and UHF capabilities, independent of my HF capabilities. In fact my tower is set up for 50, 144 & 432. It also has wire end feds coming off of it for HF 160-6m. My man portable Communications is focused primarily on HF. But I do carry an HT for aprs from time to time. Don't do repeaters 73 Julian oh8stn

no way! I operate from .5 watts to 1kw depending on what I am doing. I operated as 6Y5IPS on the beach with 10 to 20 watts using a Packtenna Mini balun linked dipole and the Chameleon Hybrid micro and a ten foot whip. Bands were horrible so the extra power added an S unit. A week before I was testing the linked dipole with 5 watts and it was -27C. My manpack is 10 watts and I usually run NVIS with that. Does the WSPRlite count? The 891 draws 1A in idle and peaks around 4A at 15 watts allowing a battery pack for mobility. The receiver and DSP beats the 10 year old 817 as expected but I am not selling the 817. I am looking to just use resonant antennas with the 891 so I can the antenna tuner at home. I miss a real power control knob.

I tried to replicate that USB clicking problem but this radio wasn't having any of it. The closest I was able to come to it was with a cheap cable I got from eBay years ago. Anyway I'm going to post all these types of videos doing digital modes and working with the noise reduction and things like that, so they will be no doubt. I love this radio! Bought it a few months ago after consulting my "elmer" dad :). Quick note, I just purchased a Wolphi-Link and using Droid PSK on my Samsung S8+. The Data jack on the FT-891 has the same pinout as the FT-817 Data jack and the cable works just fine! Still building my field kit for camping. QQ - Does the Z817 LDG tuner work "natively" with this radio? Love to get it but haven't done enough research yet for it. I see you have it hooked up. Thanks Julian! BTW, you and David Casler are my FAVORITE HAM KZbin channels. Love the content and I am so pleased that I can follow more about your experience with the 891! Apparently FB has a great forum on this radio but I gave up on that social media poison years ago. - 73!

Outstanding comment. Thanks for sharing your experience with the radio and the data connections. I have to see 817 North remember it's only good for 25 watts. A buddy of mine is doing a mod project right now with the z100. We're actually going to try and put it in a smaller case so it's the same form factor as the Z 817. Stand by the channel on my blog for that. By the way if you're doing this type of field Ops please come join us in the portable digital and qrp group on Facebook. 73 Julian oh8stn

@titanium5 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir. Much appreciated coming from you! OK, I just want to make sure I understand clearly Julian. Are you saying the Z-817 tuner will work on the FT-891? I understand that it's only good for RF power up to 20 watts SSB and CW, 5 watts for digital modes. :) I like that it pulls power from the radio and for what I will be using, 5W for digital in the field is fine. The physical pin out is the same on the ACC port for the 817 as the 891's Tun/Lin port (8 pin). But it looks like the ALC pin on the 817 is labeled the Rest (Band D) on the 891. Also the Band Data pin on the 817 is labeled the Band C on the 891. So, if you've used it (I see it at :40 sec into your video sitting on top of your 891) and can say for sure it works, I'll purchase one today!

Sir, After looking @ your considerable social media presence, I wasn't sure of the best place to post this query so, here seemed as good as any. You've held forth at length re: your preference for the best man-pack system and it appears this 891 experiment may be a good addition to that line of thought. That aside, I am... starting from scratch, and would appreciate knowing if your opinion has changed regarding the FT817ND system you've suggestedin the recent past is still the most robust, portable, budget minded and versatile option for field ops?(i.e. being able to listen to everyone.) The classic retort clearly is: "well that depends..." I know. I live in a mountainous state in the central US and spend a sig. amount of time above 10,000ft and am capable of dealing with just about any weather condition, but would like to be able to speak with my father due north about 600mi. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I've learned a great deal from your presence here. Thank you in advance for your thoughts. N

Great video, Julian. I’m new to HF and went with the FT-818ND as I’m a backpacker, but found that a QRP radio is rough as your first HF rig. It’s been two years since this video was released. Is the FT-891 still the sweet spot for more powerful field operations? Would you replace your FT-891 for the new IC-705 even though the latter is still QRP?
@OH8STN
@OH8STN 4 жыл бұрын
Awesome question. The FT-891 is definitely not a backpacking radio. For me it's a more capable, more powerful field radio. Something we would use for critical communications, but definitely not for backpacking. I love the FT-891 and wouldn't sell Still, my heart longs for a full-featured QRP+ pocket portable rig. One which doesn't require a mess of wires, mechanical filters, or a 10 watt amplifier strapped to it. That's why I'm buying the Icom IC-705. If I'm building a QRO go box, the 891 is a nice option. If I'm fat bike camping above the Arctic Circle, it's gonna be the IC-705. Does that make sense?

OH8STN Ham Radio Perfect sense. Thank you for the detailed response. It looks like the FT-891 will fill another need outside of my backpacking use case. I think I’ll pick one up for use as a mobile rig in the Jeep, a portable base station for home, and as a portable station for the RV. Keep up the good work. I’ve been binging for weeks on your channel.

I understand your reasoning for the lack of 2m and 70cm. However I would like to mention in defense of the 817 and 857, AND my old 897, that they allow modes on 2 and 70 other than FM. SSB 2m is a particular favorite toy of mine. Could this make a difference in YOUR planned usage? I doubt it, but wanted to bring it up as most common 2m radios are FM only.
@OH8STN
@OH8STN 6 жыл бұрын
+neubert500 Agreed! In fact 2 meter SSB is one of my old favorites. My home station has a 9 element yagi on the tower for 2m. Yeah, I agree with you. I rationalized the decision because 99% of my operating on the field station is still on HF. Grade point, and very well said. 73 Julian oh8stn

It chooses automatically depending on the band. If you're in a data mode, you can choose upper or lower sideband. You can always override the setting and choose the band you want. In this case I would agree with your first statement, it's kind of ridiculous.

I briefly had the 818, now have the 891. Comes down to power. I've done a couple of SOTA activations, and haven't been able to make contact using my KX2 (which outputs 12W) running SSB. Today I did one, same antenna, with the 891 and had my four contacts within a few minutes including ones from MO and KS (I'm in CA). No substitute for power if you're doing SSB. If you're running CW or data you can often get away with QRP.

Do you recommend still like prefer the FT891 over the ft 857d?
@OH8STN
@OH8STN 5 жыл бұрын
That's kind of a trick question but I'll answer it. I absolutely prefer the ft-891 over the ft-857 delta. Unfortunately it's not that simple. If we're talking about HF only radio, removing VHF and UHF from the equation side-by-side the ft-891 is the absolute winner. On the flip side if we include VHF and UHF capabilities, naturally one would levitate towards the 857 Delta. Since I have a separate VHF UHF radio, I prefer to have this Superior performance and reception of the eight nine one over the eight five seven. Does that make sense?

It may be just a little larger than you might desire for your Ruck, but the Hardened Power Systems Scout G1 is a strong unit that provide unbeatable protection during missions into the field...

+Mark Thomas thanks Mark. I like the Scout for the desktop but definitely not for the field. Also the Scout forces the operator to use a lead acid battery which is heavy and inefficient. I thought about doing my own version of the Scout removing all of the unnecessary components and building it in a 7.62 ammo can instead.

I think if I remember correctly, the Scout can be used with LiFePO4 batteries, and can be ordered without a battery so you can use your own... Although a little large it still has quite a durable platform for most of the items necessary for field operations...

I checked that out as well, they use the same charger 4 Letter acid as they do with lithium iron phosphate. I even asked them if they would just remove the lead-acid charge controller and just deliver the Scout with unterminated power pole so I could integrate my own charging circuit and Battery, they said no.

Ah, yep that's a deal breaker... to much weight for your application...Looks like your going to be able to make it smaller and lighter, with you components...

I may still order the scout just to have a total system movable but not for my field station. I like the ammo can gear they have and I think they're doing a good job of it.

As I have shared in previous comments, I am concerned about your power budget. Can you measure the power consumption of the radio on receive, transmit on 30w and on 100w. Preferably using CW. I want to calculate average power consumption and compare it against your solar power generation. The specs say receive is about 2a and 100w transmit is about 20a. I want to see what your numbers are. It would be great to see if the theoretical numbers match actual field experience. This is not just idol curiosity. Most 100w rigs on the market have similar specs. You are going to find out if such a rig is really capable of prolonged portable field operations. I am almost giddy to find out if it can be done. Sincerely, Charlie KM4ZZ

+crbrelativity here's the answer to the first part of your question instagram.com/p/BfJQ5fggh5d/ forgive me for being grumpy. If you remember one simple fact and that is I'm still a little power operator, it's much easier to reconcile the numbers. I plan on running this rig at 20 watts. Receive current with my settings is between 0.95 and 1 amp. we can get that lower if we switch fans to normal mode, and turn off the backlight for the buttons and display. More to come 73 Julian oh8stn

I detected no grumpiness. Forgive me if I seem overly interested. At 20w we will also see if the generated extra S unit will be worth the price in power consumption. You are indeed doing important work. Charlie

The ft-891 is still my primary rig. It's relegated to daily comms from the ham shack, and for high-power nasecamp comms when deployed. I think your question and we turned into an excellent video topic. I planned this. 73 Julian oh8stn

I love the size of the 891 but what's stopping me from buying it is the 15+ item menus and sub-menus. How on earth did you get to know this well enough to be able to use it without constantly referring to the manual while in the field? One of my criteria for a field radio is that it's simple enough to use in an emergency situation. For me the 891 is powerful but in no way simple to use. Thank you for your videos! Adam W7MP

Customizable quick front panels buttons. 😀 Seriously though, the ft-891 is designed to be used with memories. There's a lot of menus but generally we're only using the mode, the filters, and the DSP. All of these can be controlled through the quick buttons on the front panel once set up. I want to be annoying things about the eight nine one is the loss of your settings when changing bands, if you don't store them in memories. To be fair, I'm giving Yaesu a little latitude with this radio, because it has the best receiver of any radio I've ever owned. It's pretty crazy actually. I don't understand why they ruined the user interface like they did.

@@OH8STN I want to love it. I really do. But having come from the ICOM 706 MKIIG many years ago this is a steep curve, not intuitive at all. I have a 7300 as base station and am comparing the 7100, 7200 and Yaesu 891 for portables. Heck it may be worthwhile to just get a second 7300 for portable. The weight difference is only 4.66 lbs between 7300 and 891. I don't have an interest in mounting it in my vehicle. I'm interested in what you're doing, which makes so much sense - the best way to train for off grid is to be off grid. Your videos are so well put together. Keep them coming! Your tips are so useful, you should also start an Ex-Pat channel! ;)

@@AdamBoettiger well Adam, I'm not selling it :-) just answering your questions. I'm going to keep my 891 for data mode Communications. Honestly however, I'm moving over to the Icom IC 705 when it arrives. That'll be my qrp replacement. Then I might actually go ahead and pull the trigger on the 7300.

I own this radio. I'd advise to anyone who wants a separation kit to research alternatives. There are super cheap cables and better face plate mounting options from 3rd party vendors (for a much lower cost). Trust me. It's a great radio but the sep kit is very overpriced.
