I have not tried to hook up SDRPlay to the 991a as of yet because there is something missing from the back of the rig, IF out or RF out. So your saying that you are receiving using the USB jack and Omni-Rig?? I have an FT-DX300 which comes with those options (IF out or RF out RCA jacks) and I use a homemade cable from the IF RCA jack out straight to the SDRplay antenna jack. This give me the signal for the receive on the SDRPlay. The only other thing is hooking up the USB from the back of the 3000 to your PC, and also hooking up the USB from the SDRPlay to the PC as well. Then of course you set up your com ports,etc. to a program such as N1MM for example. Since there is no IF out or RF out jacks on the back of the Ft-991A, how would you hook up the SDRPlay to receive? I am also a bit confused as to why you cannot TX with the SDRPlay hooked up. I use SDR Console and just go to the external radio settings menu, then Transmit, and tick the 3 checkboxes labeled mute audio, set RF Gain to(set to -80dB) and reduce IF data by (set to -80 db) and I have no issues transmitting 100 watts from the rig. Am I missing something?

Thank you for the great video. 14th Jan 2023, did you ever get around to setting up with TX RX Switch?
@9821Joker3 жыл бұрын
This honestly seems kind of pointless. You either will need 2 identical HF antennas or a switch to switch beck and forth between the SDR and the 991. You didn't show that part in the video. WHy not just use something like a hackRF one and be done with it? One hookup, one USB cable, one antenna, no switching.

Can you TX with HackRF with the same antenna on ft-991a??

Thank you very much for the video, this is exactly the same setup I will do, RSP1A and FT-991, I purchased the MFJ-1708B-SDR TR switch, question, to do this setup, did you use OmniRig? I know OmniRig works for HDSDR and SDR Console so I thought it was needed for SDRuno. Thanks again. Edit: waiting for the part 2

Thanks No omni rig is not used, it's really slick. Let me know how this works. And I will do part 2 eventually. Had basement issues with melting snow So I'm busy keeping water out the house.

@@lovoldm Hello again, I used the MFJ-1708B-SDR and I'm not impressed but concerned with the isolation on the RSP1A, actually I think the RSP1A is getting a lot of my FT-991 signal specially on 100w SSB, I had to change the AGC to fast in SDRuno and I bought a Easy TR Switch from QRPKITS.COM, assembled it and I did a modification to it, the MFJ when the rig is in TX it will short to ground the RSP1A input, so the mod I did to the TR Switch was when in TX it will short the cable coming from the MFJ and short the cable going to the RSP1A, now I see a reasonable reduction I the signal coming to the RSP1A. By the way, SDRuno and the FT-991 are synchronized. Thanks

@@vijovame glad that it's working I have heard that about the 1708b, I just unplug the usb cable and shut down sdr uno when I want to chat. It seems to be fine that way for now Thanks I will check out the link.

@@vijovame I don't understand how you connected the TR Switch. You mention that you modified it to short the cable coming from the 1708 and short the cable going to the RSP1A. There is only one cable going from the 1708 to the RSP1A which is grounded inside of the 1708 in Xmit. What cable are you referring to that "comes from the 1708" that you short when transmitting?
@vijovame4 жыл бұрын
@@gregbaer3595 that one, I know it's already shorted in the 1708b but I short it again in tx on the TR switch. By the way, I replaced all coaxial jumpers to rg213/u and that helped too to the problem. 2 wire jumpers on the TR are needed to get the short in the 2 cables, the one coming from 1708b and the one going to the sdr. I can send you a picture but I don't know how.

@lovoldm3 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention you got to use Omni rig but it's pretty simple. the only thing I don't have is a way to transmit I got to shut the SDR off, I don't have a transfer switch so you got to be careful there.

So if you don't use something like the MFJ-1708B-SDR do you have to switch the antenna back and forth between the SDR and the 991 to receive and then transmit?

Why do you need the extra cables? Like FL Digi will run with just a USB. Not understanding what the extra cables are for.

One cable is for the sdrplay. The other cable is connected to the 991 This is a easy way to make your radio like the new expensive ones. Omni rig is also used. No extra hook ups needed for Omni rig. Only two cables r hooked up

Hey, thanks for the video! I am not yet quite sure how you have set-up everything. How is which device connected with which device? USB from FT991 is connected to the computer for CAT control only, right? The IQ signal is not coming via that same USB, right? How does the audio/Antenna signal (?) from the FT991 go to the SDRPlay Box/computer? Would be grateful if you could enlighten me! Thanks in advance! I personally have hooked up an SDRPLAY RSPduo to my computer here using SDRUNO with it, but so far no connection between the computer and/or the RSPduo with my FT991. BR, Steve

Really sucks you have to buy almost $400 worth of stuff just to get Remote Control + PanAdapter for a $1200 Radio. Almost everyone is doing IF output on their higher end radios. Makes no sense why Yaesu would so heavily limit the 991s.

Well yes it does stink. But the rsp1a costed me 110 dollar's, I used sdr uno free software download, as well as the free omnirig download. So it was very reasonable. I still need to get a good RF protection switch, But using a external monitor, and being able to see the signals, it is way cheaper than the Top of line radios. Just with a few less Perks. But with my budget, this works Mint. Enjoy the day.
