Great information. I just got an FT-2980, and was hoping this worked for it. It does, fortunately. I dropped the "High" power output from 80 watts down to 60 watts. I personally didn't really need or want a full 80 watts for high. It runs a little bit cooler on longer keydowns, and draws less amperage. Win, win. Thanks!

I bought a FT-2900 (not an "R") at a hamfest and someone had it turned up to 90 watts which IMO isn't going to make hardly any difference in output compared to how it came from the factory at 75 watts except make it run hotter. Your video showed me how to turn it down where it should be. I have a 350 watt amp for high power if i need it. I also turned down the 3 lower power settings like you did. BTW: just for grins I turned it all the way up to FF and using a Bird 43 into a good dummy load I was amazed to see it will do nearly 140 watts. I bet the final wouldn't last long at all like that Lastly, I recommend anyone doing any power adjustment to make sure your meter reads correctly and your terminating it into a good 50 ohm dummy load. If you do it transmitting through an antenna even a 1.2~1.3 to 1 swr can give erroneous readings on your meter so you won't know exactly what it's putting out

Popular on YT "power upgrade" 75->80 or 90W give less than 1dB, which has meaning "zero" in real QSO distances, and big risk for device

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinions when I started out with that radio 75 words I’m in the northeast Georgia mountains, with a good beam, to be more specific a cush craft a 148 10 s and could barely get out past maybe 80 miles in any given direction, and it was a stretch had flat swr across-the-board antenna is about 45 foot up in the air. Well after doing that mod, I was talking into South Carolina hitting Greenwood Anderson, Pickens, Greenville Stone Mountain, Georgia downtown Atlanta, Georgia, Georgia Tech, which is way down there in downtown Atlanta sometimes Alabama every single day mainly South Carolina the Alabama would be sporadic but South Carolina all the time consistently without a struggle now I will say this looking back if I knew back then what I know today I would’ve just invested in a Maroge B3 20 G amplifier and not wasted my time I will admit that but that’s the beauty of this hobby learn by doing I also from that radio learned I will never on another radio again without a fan because even in its stock state that thing got hot enough you could fry an egg on it so I will always have radios with fans in my shack. Thanks for the comment again 73s from your friend kk4rqo a.k.a. Mountainman3225

To the profile who said it was a bad design I'm sorry it didn't show up at first I could write direct Amen to that brother or sister that's why I went with the yayct 3200 I believe it's the Dr for system fusion but when I get ready to put a radio in my Kubota I will be getting the 3200 because it may not be the most powerful radio in the world but at least it's got a fan to keep it cool that means more to me as a radio operators than anything else

L1 Code 33 = 2 watts, L1 Code 44 = 5 watts, L2 Code 6C = 15 watts, L3 Code 90 = 30 watts, HP Code FF = 75 watts, are these settings result always be the same no matter what antenna you are using. Is there any tables for these codes for each power level available to have it handy? Appreciate your help and respond my friend.

Thank you for your prompt reply my friend, I'm using an omni directional V2R (local made) in Indonesia and I believed it have the same specification as the V2R with your local made. I will try to use the 2 watts setting for L1 with Code 33 and see if it goes as far as 30 miles as you mention in your video (approximately). But my antenna, geographically condition and propaganda of my location and your's are very different. But for the sake of testing, I think it should be ok. I'll get back to you as soon as I done doing the test, and let see if this radio as many people say is the king of mobile transceiver.

Well, Corby, correct me if I spelled your name wrongly. At the moment I'm using FT-2900R with a manual Antenna Tuner DAIWA CN-919 which is an old type of tuner and I'm thinking of buying a new one MFJ-921-Manual-tuner-SWR. My antenna is tuned at the 145 Mhz, SWR 1.2 my cable RG8 Belden 9XXX +/- 20 meters long and it's SWR is1.2, it is hard to get a flat SWR on the cable. I'm using a Tri-angel tower 5 meters x 3, so practically my antenna (V2R) about 12 meter above the ground. I did try with the 2 watts output and it did hit +/- 25 miles with a 3 to 4 bar signal strength on the other party side. It's a success if I may say. Need your opinion with MFJ-921! or is there any other type available for 2 meter? is it still producing MFJ-921 as per today for this item? as in AMAZON.COM they only have left 2 unit of it or may be any other recommendation for me my friend?
@mountainMAN3225

Loemika Surya Rachmat Rafioedin I'm honestly not sure since I don't use a tuner for two meters so that may be good I'm not sure do any of your repeaters in your location have EchoLink because I'd like to make contact with you sometime and I just did the conversion on your Tower and that is more than enough now I'm not saying a 50-foot will not be permitted or a hundred I'm not sure what that will it be in meters but you have an awesome setup by how you describe it so I'd say jump on that tuner and start making contacts and as I said if you as a repeater you can get into with EchoLink let me know and I'll make contact with you I'm glad to see my video where the help oh and what's your with because I'd like to get a feel for the terrain

If you get a good Antenna with a 6 Dbi gain at 75 watts you will have a great reach with your signal of about 450 watts, but may not hear someone far away Everything I have read speaks of having a Good antenna First. And why Mod the radio when 2 Meter Amps can put out a lot of power. Just Wondering. Thanks for any feed back

Gfdf Perte good question here's a scenario for you you're a new ham you have that great antenna you just getting started you don't have much fun to work with set a fire costing order between $200 to $500 I should know I bought one okay or you're talking local and 5 Watts just is too much so what's the first rule of broadcast use the minimal power needed to make the contact right there you go now I have a 10 element cushcraft model a1428 10 S Beam about 50 foot up in the air and a 200 watt Mirage B 320 G amplifier bright amp but when I head that radio I did not have the money to buy that amplifier had the antenna couldn't buy the amp that's why that mod is so nice I hope this helps thank you for your question and just for anybody else this mod is not for everybody I just put it out there for those who wanted to try it so thanks again 😎

I have the 2900R. supplying it with about 14volts and a Diamond base antenna. I'm getting right at 73 watts out, WHY did you have to do any MODS ? My radio is about 2yrs. old with very low SWR's on the antenna and coax.

Well two reasons one I wanted to run the lowest power I could for local stuff 2 where I am located at the repeaters I talked into 75 Watts just wasn't cutting it so I modified that radio the bridge the gap until I could do better since this video I have purchased a yaesu ftm-3200dr and a mirage b 320 g amplifier connected to a 10 element beam about 30 foot off the ground so now you know thanks for the comment

Well if you have a dummy load it would probably be better so it don't transmit over the air I did not when I made the video so I just went to 145.000 to set mine up but if you have a dummy load set it to the same frequency do the same steps but no it does not have to be on a dummy load hope this helps oh and I don't remember off the top of my head but if you could there's a KZbinr down the list who was asking about the stock power settings and those menus if you could take a picture of that or when you go to your radio let him know because I honestly don't know it's been so long since I've had that radio thanks

Yes if you go into the high power setting and set it to FFthat should give you a hundred Watts now this will vary from radio to radio because unless you have a bird meter to check your power you will not get a very accurate reading but it will be close enough on my radio with a mfj VHF meter it showed around 100 Watts thanks for the comment
