Hi Roger, I have both radios like you. I just got the 101 MP a couple of weeks ago and really love it! I have had the 7610 for about 2 years now and I have had to get it back to ICOM twice for repairs, so mine has not been very reliable. It’s the first ICOM I have had to send back twice for repairs ever. I have been brand loyal to ICOM for a long time but thought I would get the 101 MP and see how they compare side by side. If you watch a video by W6EL on the 7610 radio it sums up most of the things that are wrong with the user interface on that radio, and I agree with all that he presents on his opinion. Best things about the 7610 are the basics, great audio both ways and the scope overall, and the multifunction meter display. Worst things, are the access to memories, user interface, you can’t hide the sub receiver display if your not using it, most things need to be accessed via the touch screen, can’t access anything but the frequency change on the display with a mouse control, terrible sounding external ICOM matching speaker. There could be more but I can’t think of them now…. Overall the 101 MP is a far better radio, the 7610 is now my backup radio. Best things about the 101 , lots of tuning options, fast button, Fine, etc. You can control all functions on the touch screen via wireless mouse, I like the 3D scope, easily control level to the best results with the Multi button. By lowering the noise level just before they get too high it gives the best signal to noise ratio for a clear display. Playing with the scope level gets you familiar with this… VC tune, DNR,Contour,APF,C.S Function button, shift/width control, Audio adjustments on receive and the parametric EQ on TX, the speaker in the power supply, the metering on display, user interface, memory system, general receive and transmit audio, Build quality,ALL THESE ARE OUTSTANDING ON THIS RADIO. A few niggles I have found so far on the 101 is the short timeout on some display items when opening up menu for changes, can set the clock but no visible display?? Some want averaging on the display and would be easy to implement this in a new firmware patch but Yaesu won’t do this for some reason. It doesn’t bother me as I have worked out the display to get the most out of it… CW keyer not as good as the 7610 keyer. There is a bug in the band stacking memories in GEN button with my radio where one memory is not alterable, the other two are…. AMC is hard to understand at first… the manual is not helpful in this case… as the radio is new to me I have not discovered much more negatives as yet…. These are my opinions and I really love the 101 more than the 7610 for now. I’m keeping both because I don’t need to sell my 7610 and it’s the backup if the 101 has a problem or needs repairs etc. Love your videos Roger and keep them coming and keep up the good work! All the best from DownUnder from Les, VK3TEX, Echuca, Victoria , Australia .

Hi Les, I'm looking at the yaesu ftdx101mp and icom 7610. I have a 7300 905 9700 and a ft891. I feel the 891 has better nr. anyway after 4 months from writing the above. If you could only choose one, what would you choose? Cheers from Victoria. VK3ACU

Hi Jordan, Absolutely get the 101MP, far superior to the 7610 in many ways. More expensive but worth it. Best radio I have had since my Kenwood TS 990. Cheers Les VK3TEX

Touch the meter on the Icom and after a few seconds, all parameters will be displayed at one time. Only radio I know of that does that.

Considering what you were missing on the Icom why not just buying an amplifier and an external swr meter… considering the price of a yaesu 1000. And as someone commented on the Icom you can have all the meters working at the same time. By the way it’s strange how they design radios nowadays.. on old radios you have rf gain and squelch as separate knobs!!
