Amazing. I did oposite after ft991a get trouble with ATU, then end transistors died (after 30 qsos). Ft991a has totaly shitty menu as touch screen is not fully used as at 7300. I have many Yaesu but 991 was my last one. I'm disapointed how shitty trx they release for the market. It has also cuted many functions from predecessors like ft897. 100memory in hf, vhf, uhf is a joke.

I've never had any issue with my FT-991 firmware wise. The early rigs had bad biasing from the factory causing the PA to die. They fixed that about a year or so prior to the 991A. Still, I'd like to have a separate HF rig. I was about to buy a 7300. I'm glad I saw this. I'm thinking I'll wait for the FTDX10 and see how it stacks up. Thank you for making this video.

A friend of mine has the 590SG, great radio, it has all the buttons, looks like a proper radio, great filters, great audio and you have the panadapter built in to connect your own SDR for the big waterfall and if he had got the 590sg before I got my 7300 I would have got this instead. I also have the FT-891 and with headphones the audio is just wonderful, I think Yaesu have the edge when it comes to Audio. All the Rob Sherwood reports don't tell how a radio will sound and this is as important as it's performance. The 7300 audio just isn't good, it's got a natural high noise floor. So I got the PTRX 7300 Panadapter and hooked it up to my Airspy HF+, big difference but my 891 audio quality wise still has the edge with headphones. 7300 + PTRX panadapter + SDR is expensive, best to get the FT-DX10 if looking for a new radio.

I had the original FT991 and there were a lot of issues with it. I now have the FT991A and I love it to bits, I don't seem to suffer any of the issues that you are talking about with the 7300.
@W-733_KWX4 жыл бұрын
There is still a solution to the 7300: you can turn backwards the RF gain (it's simple but not the best solution) and if you have overload, try 2 things : make a preselector (i built one and it makes improvements), and / or have a RX loop antenna + the separation kit to have a separate RX and TX antenna (will cost the few hundreds you'd lose but you'll have a loop antenna as a plus). On my side I am keeping the 7300 for the higher bands (15 and higher and mostly for 10 and 6 and 4m), and my 850SAT / 590SG combo for the lower bands.
@oh3spnfinland7184 жыл бұрын
I often need to do exactly this (reduce RF gain) especially when the AGC is disabled. However, at least on the digital modes this can then make weak signals disappear into the noise floor of the receiver. For stronger signals this works well though. Thanks for the comment!

I bought an Apache Labs Hermes late 2023 production run and run it with Thetis and a 500 w amp. Head and shoulders above the IC7300. The biggest advantage is the in depth capability of the software frankly and playing around with dozens of settings won't suit everyone. However you have menus and multifunction knobs etc to work with on all modern radios
@walterblizzard23 күн бұрын
New to this and was thinking about getting a hermes lite 2+, what kind of amp are you running and how did you set it up?
@srviejo22983 жыл бұрын
First, the IC-7300 has poor selectivity at -40 dB @ 3.4 kHz (competitive radios in the same price range are -60 dB @ 3.4 kHz0. Second, the AGC issue is, and always has been problematic with most radios. The key to resolve this is with your adjustable band pass filters and adjustable notch filters. The bandpass should be reduced in bandwidth and centered on the station you are receiving. The notch can be used to attenuate that one strong signal in the passband that is causing the AGC to reduce receiver sensitivity. This greatly reduces AGC activity from occurring on unwanted signals without disabling the AGC altogether. The ease of applying the filters rapidly on radios that have knobs for these adjustments (think FT-2000 like radios) is a big plus. Menus do enhance the ability to rapid make adjustment to the filters. I like KNOBS!!!!!

Perfectly agree with your toughts. In my opinion the FTDX10 (having the best display of the rigs you mentioned) could be a very interesting alternative of the IC-7300. Probably time will confirm or not this point of view. Anyway, I wish I had it!

Until I posted this video I felt I was perhaps the only one experiencing these issues. It's good to know I'm not crazy :) Running both the 7300 and FTDX10 (or even the current FTDX101) would make a very interesting comparison. I did say I could't afford to chop and change radios but the more I think about this, the more attractive the FTDX10 is looking.

Having had other SDR's, I was never happy with the performance of the 7300 or 7610. I much preferred my used IC-7700. I said I would never own another Yaesu (mainly due to the user interface) but this FTDX10 looks interesting.
@o00scorpion00o3 жыл бұрын
I think SDR's can introduce a lot of noise to the audio, if I compare my FT-891 to my 7300 hands down the 891 wins for audio quality via headphones. I prefer audio quality and quiet receiver over screens and waterfalls.
@Homer195213 жыл бұрын
That's a big 10-4. The Flex AGCT is very good at reducing the noise floor. (not the lab noise floor, for you sticklers)
@o00scorpion00o2 жыл бұрын
I got the FTDX10 a couple of months ago and it's amazing, really a huge jump from the 7300, gone is that overload and no having to back down on RF gain and no harsh audio, the Hybrid design is a real winner. The DX-10 filters are vastly superior to the 7300, The noise blanker is better on the DX10 but neither the 7300 or DX10 or most radios have fantastic noise blanker anyway. DNR on the DX10 is hands down much better than the 7300 and great against static from Lightning. But most of the time I don't need it but I did on the 7300 all the time to reduce that harsh audio. The audio from the DX10 is amazing, this is down to the hybrid design because the 891 sounds so much better than the 7300 also, SDR really needs proper control over the AGC because without it the background noise can be very harsh and to get a better understanding about that connect and sdr to your computer and load up sdr console and mess around with the AGC settings, or go to the many online Kiwi SDRs and play with the AGC threshold, you can make the Kiwis sound really sweet, if they have decent antennas of course. I only listen with headphones. The DX 10 isn't perfect though the screen resolution is 800x600 and while this is fine for the radio screen on a big screen it's not very good, you won't get the waterfall visual quality you'll get with a normal sdr and sdr console for example, not even close but it does the job. It really is a minor complaint because I find myself using the radio screen most of the time anyway as it's a bit larger than the 7300. The mouse works but you can't use the mouse wheel, and Lord knows why Yaesu won't allow typing on the fly for PSK31 or RTTY ? it would be really convenient not needing a computer for these modes. You have to use text stored in memory, kind of like macros in the likes of Fldigi. I was really impressed at how much I could knock out QRM on 80m on a Saturday night, it's a pity 80m ends at 3800 Khz in Europe. Of course no radio can eliminate splatter which is an every increasing problem along with those who feel 4 Khz bandwidth is acceptable or fair on a crowded band, not everyone wants to hear booming bass in someone's voice. I really am very impressed with the FTDX-10, I think Yaesu really have nailed it when it comes to receive audio quality. The Contour along with notch filter can really make a massive difference, if you are thinking about getting it then do you will be very happy.

Just to clear up some of your questions or assumptions. The FTDX10 will be utilizing the same receiver of the FTDX101. The Hybrid configuration allows the radio to only concentrate on the portion that you are attempting to receive. This allows for amazing rejection outside of signals adjacent to your operating frequency. As you pointed out as well as others this is somewhat difficult for other manufacturers. Also I would love to hear where you obtained the information about firmware issues on the 991A?
@oh3spnfinland7184 жыл бұрын
My comments regarding the FT991 were based on comments from a club using an FT991 (non A) as the club radio. I also researched both radios online, whilst keeping in mind that each have their fair share of praise/criticism. Of course, the performance of the Hermes pushed me towards the SDR based IC7300 but in hindsight, I think this was an expensive mistake. FTDX101 RX performance in the FTDX10 footprint and price is looking really quite attractive right now.

I'm wondering if your experience with the 7300 is the result of the noise blanker. I have real issues with strong near signals if I have the NB on, turn it off and it decreases out of passband interference significantly. Also they did revise the 7300 midway, mine is a day one revision. I'm also in a very quiet QTH, so I'm hearing stations when the meter shows zero, and I don't suffer what you're describing. I'd say stay clear of the FTDX 10 for now, at least until they get the finals problems sorted. As for the Hermes lite, I've ordered one for the next product run, I can't wait. I'm using a Radioberry at the moment with SDR Console and that's a surprisingly good receiver, especially for 50 quid :)

Another real issue I have with the 7300 is the overshoot when driving the Acom 1000 which I read is related to AGC which could be the same issue as you experienced on FT8. Interesting observations Steve.. I'm returning to hobby after being absent for the last 30 years. The last HF transceiver I was operating was a Yaesu FT- 902-DM ! Needless to say, as things have changed so much, I'm proceeding with caution towards my next purchase. So far, I've had the IC7300 as a contender, but when I spotted the release of the new FTDX10 that uses an old school super-het front end, I've added it to the top of the contender list . The question remains as to whether Yaesu have sorted out the firmware issues that were present on it's predecessor (FT991) ? Your video certainly helped me to delay for a while, until more practical reviews on the FTDX10 start to get published. 73... Pete (G4RYO)

Thanks for the comment! I thought I delayed my purchase for long enough already but of course new radios must be announced within days of my purchase! In fairness, the IC7300 is a great radio and I did buy this with at least some awareness of the shortcomings, however I also suspected it was just the vocal minority reporting issues rather than the majority. I wasn't expecting my first experiences with the radio to be so disappointing. I still don't understand how the open source HL2 can perform so incredibly well without any additional filters, but if the roofing filters of the FTDX series resolve the issues in a traditional desktop footprint then this can only be a good thing.

I’ve been a licensed radio operator for about 18 months. I haven’t decided how to get an antenna higher up yet so I decided to create a $1,000 (USD) with the very entry level Alinco DX SRT8 as the base transceiver. My goal was to to become more knowledgeable about radio technology before plunking down a lot of money. If I’m not mistaken the FT DX10 costs about £1550 which translates to about $2000 USD. At that price, if I’m correct, the Yaesu would be in different category than the 7300, IMHO. A couple of ticks above midrange with an expectation of better performance. I’ll cherish the reviews once the FT DX10 hits the shelves in December.

I think the 7300 was around £1300 when first released, although could be mistaken. However, at current prices I do agree - there's a significant jump in cost and as someone else has pointed out, the 7300 is now 5 year old technology. Also, welcome to the hobby - and I wouldn't worry too much about the antenna height; A low height 'NVIS' dipole is working very well for me but it depends on your requirements. I'm happy to lose a few dB at very low 'DX' angles in favour of stronger local (
@dreupen4 жыл бұрын
I was serious about the Alinco too, but for just a tiny bit more, you can get the Yaesu FT-891. I got mine new for $510 after rebate. The FT-891 is insanely better radio than the Alinco. While it does not have the bells and whistles of an IC-7300, many have reported the FT-891 to have better receive and transmit performance. A huge drawback for the Alinco is lack of a USB CAT Control and digital interface. I was on the HF airways for well under $1k: FT-891+ homemade EFHW-8010 (google Steve Ellington EFHW) + existing computer ATX power supply. Add a raspberry pi w/ a cheap usb sound card and you have a powerhouse system.

Whilst we don't have VDSL to contend with here, I do now appear to have a neighbour with a noisy heating system / pump, which has only started to cause problems now the temperature is dropping. Also, I have considered the FLEX radios but their lack of Linux support is currently a problem.

Looking for a new radio and loved your video. My ICOM 750 has a blown transmitter preamp best I can tell. Any of these will likely be a step up although that is a "real" radio and not an SDR. At this point it is the ST991 or the FTDX10. Decisions...

Never again FT991!!!! I own 8 yeasus and Im happy of them, 991 was 9th. After half of year end transistors died!!! I transmitted many times by old ft857 with broken antenna and it still alive! On top 991 has extreme shitty ATU - very slow, low range and.... In most cases it INCREASE SWR! Menu is complicated, touch screen not used like it should be, and 100 memories for hf, vhf and uhf is a joke.. Impossible to program satelite split via pc! A lot of FT897 functions were cut. I sold it within half price and will never come back to modern yeasu. FT10 looks interesting but my bad experience from 991 are stronger than curiosity of FT10

The main issue for me with the FTDX10 is, like the IC-7300 is the lack of dual antenna outlets. I wish manufacturers would ditch those useless in-built antenna tuners and instead provide and antenna switch. The (typical) issues you raise with the SDR frontend on the IC-7300 could be the reason I choose the FTDX10 in preference. In the test drive we will see.... Existing HF Radio is an FT-950 and VHF is an IC-9700

Icom is infamous for rushing products to market with poor development, and engineering, that surfaces as failures, and unreliable operation. This happens over and over with each new product... leaving owners with expensive junk for which the parts are un-obtanium. I am not surprised to learn there is trouble with their newest popular rig the 7300. Listen to the vintage ssb guys... plenty of Yaseus,and some kenwoods but no Icoms !

Oh the noise! .. Its a pain in the a**... Having a bells and whistles, do it all, flat screen, waterfall, boy toy tx/rx is just an expensive way of not only hearing but being able to see all the rf crap around you.. Pointless!..I'm wondering if the ic-705 has the same technical issues as its older bigger sibling?

I have sold my 7300 because of the same problems you describe, the waterfall was nice but not contributing to more contacts. My kenwood 480sat and yaesu 990 are way better, best regards PC4R, 73.

This is exactly what I'm finding. The more people I speak to (both on and off the air) the more I realise I'm not alone with these problems. I currently plan to keep the IC7300 for a few months (unable to return to dealer, already checked!) and reassess the situation in 2021.

This issue is not limited by mode, just more evident in FT8 where I'm already working with signals below the noise floor. If strong signals are overloading the front end, there's really no option but to attenuate the input.

Hi Javier, thanks for the comment. The Hermes (and probably SDRPlay) are great radios and I'd recommend exploring what they offer. However, there's many times when it's nice to operate without a computer, and for this reason I think desktop radios with real knobs and switches are still in some ways preferable. If you already have a traditional desktop radio then an SDR like the Hermes is a great addition. I hope that helps.
