Have had this radio for 2 years, can't say anything bad about it. Highly recommend to everyone. Also SD card can be loaded with repeater lists from your computer and imported to tranceiver.

Fusion is my favourite digital mode by far. I have 3 Fusion radios and love em all for their simple setup and operation compared to others. I sold all my other digital radios. You might pay a bit more compared to Chinese brands but the refinded firmware and lack of headache is well worth it. Well presented Eric :)

It's a great radio. I've got one set up as a Digital RF Gateway (MB6IGK), generally connected to the CQ-UK room. It's performed flawlessly for two years now. A note on the Micro SD cards though. You will never need a 32GB Micro SD card, even if you download images all day, every day- they are very low quality and take up very little space. A 4GB card will cover all but the most extreme use. Also, don't buy this model if you want to operate APRS at the same time as talking/listening. It can't do it. It's one or the other. ie. you can do digital, or analogue, or APRS, but only one at a time. When Yaesu calls it a 'dual band' radio, they mean it can do VHF/UHF. Not that it can do two things at the same time. You need the FTM-400 for that functionality, as that is an actual simultaneous dual band radio. Think of this radio as an updated FT-7800/FT-7900, with digital and APRS thrown in.
@AmphibianLifeForm6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for calling attention to the fact that the FTM 100D is not dual receive. Important point! I nearly ordered this thinking it also was dual receive. I have the 400D and am looking for a similar second rig - at lower cost if i can find one. I like using one side for APRS while being able to do normal functions on the other side.

THANK YOU for pointing out the APRS limitations. I just about pulled the trigger on one of these thinking I'd be able to do smartbeacon APRS on one VFO and monitor a VFO or memory on the other... Not being able to do that is a deal breaker. Luckily, the other option I was looking at was already an FTM-400. Thanks!

I got a question for you could you set it up to where the radio automatically programs itself depending on your location let's say you were going through Kansas City I don't know if there's any digital there but it could ping the location and all of the frequencies of the area and then when you're down the road a little ways it does it again that in my opinion would be absolutely priceless because for a lot of hams referring to the old analog it makes it real pain in the back side traveling across country where you would have to program your radio ahead of time programming a radio is never any fun

The FTM-400 is a great little radio I have 2 of them one my car and one for the dedicated wires-x node radio for a repeater. Funny I heard you on the radio creating this video in MNWIS room. It is a pretty big network that covers more than just Minn and Wis. During the net's we can see over 100 nodes connected that can be single users or repeaters that are connected. I love having a single repeater that can do digital or FM. It is a cost reducer and a frequency saver. Thanks Eric for the video.

According to Yaesu's website this radio is capable of Data only mode. They state "Data FR mode uses the full rate of data capacity for transferring data. This mode enables you to transfer large amounts of data, text messages, images". How do you send images with it. How do you get the images on the radio to send. When someone sends an image to the radio, how do you view it..?

Hi Eric, a great indication of what this radio will do. I have been away from the hobby for a few years and even then I did not use VHF/UHF that much - mainly HF. Getting back into it I am now looking at either the FT8900 or FTM 100DR (maybe even the FTM7250DR) for the car - any suggestions on which one??? I am at a loss. I probably won't use the 10m or 6m on the 8900, but I do like the ability to listen to 2 bands at the same time - scan one and work on the other??? Anyway, love your opinion on all of this. Many thanks in advance. Regards, Don VK7LDH.

Eric what antenna do you use to reach to the repeaters ? I’m I. South Florida and have trouble reaching out to repeaters that are less then 15 miles from me ( I’m mobile with my radio uv-5r).

I've had good performance with the Tram 11861 mag mount. Bought it off Amazon for only $30. It has a PL259, so you'll need an SO239 to SMA female adapter to connect it to a UV-5R.

Thanks for the help from the other responses. I currently own a Diamond SG7900 although not on my truck at the moment, however the best antenna I ever had was the MFJ-1432B it is over 5 feet and the gain from that antenna allowed me to work 50 watts on simplex almost 50 miles away when mobile. When I had my Mirage 160 watt amp connected to this antenna in the car, I could talk through the Orlando 2 meter repeater from Sebastian, and on a good day, straight across to the west coast of Florida to the Holiday repeater on a good morning in the spring. Be sure to check out my upcoming videos on those bands, especially 2 meters VHF.

thanks for the tour! have never toyed with fusion on this coast, so I enjoyed jumping along for the ride. If you had to make a choice these days, would you lean towards purchasing a Fusion DMR of a DStar? Fusion seems to be the private domain of our ARES people, and I dont even know what we have a DStar around here. Cya ! 73 N4BRM
@2E0JTP6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what it's like in the US, but in the UK, we are starting to see inter-connectivity between the modes. If you buy something like a SharkRF Openspot, you can pretty much connect to whichever network you fancy, regardless of who is using what locally. If I had to choose between the three, I wouldn't choose DMR, but purely because it requires a lot of pre-programming of code plugs before you can even attempt to use it, or blind faith that someone else has set your radio code plug up for you correctly. Once that's done it's great, but you're just a 'user', like any commercial PMR user.

As you well know, hobbiest like myself have been enjoying scanners for a long time. I have been listening to one for 40 years ever since the crystal frequency days ! Now my area departments decided in the infinite wisdom, that they wanted to go digital and encrypt the channels. So now I can't hear them. So I have decided that maybe I should get into ham radio. I had just purchased a Whistler 1098 which cost me $600 or $700 basically. I figured that I could sell that scanner and get a really good ham radio with selling my scanner. I still have the box with that it came in too. My question is this What ham radio can I buy for $500-$700 I had been looking at the Icom 5100D I think is the one. Also with a Tech license what can I transmit on? I live in the woods and the radio signals aren't that good out here.
@HamRadioConcepts6 жыл бұрын
YOu need to consider what you will be doing on it. Do you have a Dstar repeater close to you? Is it connected to a gateway through the internet? Without a Dstar activity around you, you will be tying up a $600 radio for basic analog activity, which there is nothing wrong with, but you can get a 50 watt dual band Chinese radio for $100 bucks or less, allowing you more money for additional purchases...Will you be planning on HF? The radio you asked about is a good radio, however, someone buying that will be mainly getting it for Dstar. It is VHF/UHF only, so there are other options for buying a radio that has HF as well as VHF/UHF analog only, but then you could think about buying a Dstar handheld down the road for 300 bucks and enjoy dstar. As a tech, you have plenty of options for operating 10 meters and 6 meters which will allow you to work the world with very simple homemade antennas. Think about a used IC-706MK2G, it has everything in it except Dstar. But lot of options for HF/VHF/UHF, AM/FM/CW/SSB...Yaesu FT-857 is another radio worth buying used, has the same options as the IC706MK2g but smaller screen... This is just opinions.
