I know this is old, but contains some inaccurate information. AMBE2 is AMBE2. DMR and Wires-X utilizing that codec have the same audio capabilities. Older systems like D-STAR and P-25 running AMBE[1] sound different. Any perceived audio quality differences between AMBE2 systems is likely a result of a cheaper / lower quality analog audio chain from mic to chipset doing the audio CODEC conversion.

Open Spot 4, I can Use All Digital Modes! I like the way You say about People using P25, I have a Alinco DJ-MD5X DMR HT, and soon will have a Yeasu FT5D to use with My Open Spot 4!

Thank you for watching my videos. Just a word of awareness, even though the Open Spot will transcode to C4FM, it WILL NOT NAVIGATE THE Wires-X Network. You can connect to a YFS, FCS, etc. reflector that may have a room that is also connected to a Wires-X room but, that is as far as it goes. If you don’t have a repeater in your area that has Wires-X on it, you may want to think about setting up your soon to be new FT5D to be used in the PDN mode. PDN turns your FT5D into a True Wires-X node, then you will be able to navigate the Wires-X network. Having fun with Fusion. 73 Ken KA6SUB

thx for the vid. i was hoping to see abit more on how to work the radio, when am i digital? i just do not understand the concept. so my ftm300d is mostly used fm

So I have bought myself a little hotspot that will arive in 2024. Once again, thank you and would gladly try to ctc you when I have the hotspot running so I can use wires-x. Hi Ken, you and I just had a great QSO on 17 mtrs today. I've watched most of your videos since we've talked and happy I did. I had bought a DMR handy at a local hamfest and never got excited enough to learn how to program it. I'm looking for a new 2m/440 mobile rig and from your videos and our conversation, one with Fusion is the way to go. What would be your current recommendations? Hope to catch you on 17 mtrs again soon - and who knows - maybe Fusion! Appreciate the education!

Fantastic! Rusty, for mobile I would recommend the FTM-300, for a HT it would be the FT-5 and if you would like to work some 10 and 6 Meters C4FM I would go with the FT-991a (160M-70CM). I was waiting to hear from you again, let me know how you're doing. 73 Ken

It is such a shame that the place I live in Central Mindanao, Philippines is surrounded by beautiful mountains with infrastructure (electricity, telephone, and Internet) at their highest points, yet not a single Amateur Radio Repeater exists.....

After several hours of frustration, I got my new FT5DR to come to life after pressing the Wires X button. You have to be logged into a "room" that has "Wires X" in its name. I used CQ California Wires X, then when I pressed the button, it came to life with a menu of selections.

Thank you for your question, a contesters radio will have two (2) Active VFO’s. This will allow the operators to be working someone on, say 20 meters while at the same time be looking for activity elsewhere on that band or another band. Usually they will have a duplicate set of controls as the main receiver and look like two radios in one case. 73 Ken KA6SUB

Hi Gilson, Fusion is the radios ability to Automatically switch between FM and C4FM (“Yaesu’s System Fusion” Digital Voice) to match the incoming signal. Like FM, C4FM is a Type of emission. If you are using a Fusion capable radio there will be an indicator on the screen showing either FM or DN, you may also see one of them with a Bar over the top. If you see FM, then your radio is locked in FM Mode, If it is DN, then your radio is locked in Digital Mode and if you see either FM or DN with a Bar over it, then your radio is in Fusion or otherwise called AMS (Automatic Mode Select). AMS is what makes Fusion, Fusion! On most radios you can change the Mode by pressing the MODE button or on Mobile radios pressing the P3 Button on the Microphone will also work if buttons have not been reprogrammed. Also remember that the C4FM ONLY works on Yaesu Fusion Repeaters and other Fusion Radios. The Fusion radios will work on all Standard FM Repeaters, but ONLY in FM. thank you, Ken, but again, there are many explanations about what Fusion is and does, but nothing showing, steo by step, how it works from start to finish. Some huge steps are always omitted. The Yaseu "updated" list of Fusion repeaters is grossly inaccurate. Even HRO has given up on it (but they're still on Yaesu's updated list! oy. not your fault. but for me Yaesu Fusion and WiresX is a huge , rabbit hole, waste of time.@@thefusionelmerguy2234

Analog comms are so much better (in general). Digital has it's place, but a lot of people are confused by some of the differences...and it is very discouraging to many. So just be patient if you "go digital."

I know it is hard to believe, but when FM came into use, many thought that it was a fad and would go away because you couldn’t talk long distance with it as you could with SSB. Next came repeaters and you had to have two frequencies to talk on those things and if that wasn’t confusing enough they added signaling such as PL tones and such. What’s the world coming to! All of that is common place nowadays. As hams, we are supposed to be making things better, that takes change and change means confusion. This can all be resolved by excepting the change and learning the changes. With practice it will become normal. Changes become discouragement when you fight it. Being able to change may mean that a update in equipment will be necessary. When it comes to digital voice, the older ones like DMR, D-Star and others were hard to setup. Yaesu’s Fusion is as easy to setup as any 2M/70cm radio, if you over think it, you’ll be in trouble. Good luck, have fun, 73 “The Fusion Elmer Guy” Ken KA6SUB
