Okay, but this is incredible 1- a female founded competition 2- it’s not about winning (necessarily) but more about scholarships and getting the career you want 3- seems like everyone who enters is on even ground, and not rigged because you know the founder This is so wholesome, and more things need to be structured this way. No drama, no hurt feelings because you don’t know the right people, doesn’t matter your background/where you’re from. Just strictly based on talent. Absolutely love this 💜

I’m the ballet director at a jazz competition studio and we brought dancers to YAGP for the first time last year. It was SUCH a positive experience! The kids felt welcome, there was no sense of “ugh, you’re not a *real* ballet student,” they got very constructive and nurturing feedback from the judges, and they loved the master classes. Our goal was not to win, it was to push ourselves and be inspired by fellow dancers. (I am also extremely proud of how we did.) 10/10 I recommend this competition because it really is about growth. In fact, my student that made an obvious mistake scored highest because she recovered so artfully. My studio owners were nervous because of rumors about politics and possible size discrimination but I’m so glad they took the chance because none of that was real. Did my students get scholarships? No, and that’s okay because they don’t want to be professional ballet dancers. Are they proud of themselves? Yes. Did they grow in technique and artistry through the preparation process? Yes. Do they love ballet more because of this experience? Yes! And I haven’t even mentioned my growth as a teacher through this process. Truly, YAGP is a wonderful opportunity and we are already registered to return this year. Thank you for all the work you do to make this possible!

So back in 2006 I was supposed to compete in YAGP but the studio I was dancing with at the time shut down and I wasn't able to go to another dance school. It's been 15yrs since and now I'm back in ballet as an adult and getting used to being en pointe again and it makes me so sad knowing that I missed my chance when I was younger. At the studio I dance at, the kids are so excited every year for YAGP and when we have class we sometimes stop our class to watch them perform.

I only started ballet in my adulthood, but im a lifelong highland dancer… and one thing my great-aunt says who was until recently a highland teacher and adjudicator always said is ïts not a first past the post sport”meaning like Larissa said dance is subjective, yes in highland we have slightly more structure than most competitive dance forms with set steps and judging guidelines, but even then some judges prefer stronger more athletic dancers and others prefer softer more balletic dancers… and that’s ok!
