This hits home for me SO hard. One of my best friends was accused of assaulting two girls in 9th grade. He insisted that it didn’t happen, but nobody believed him. He was expelled and arrested, his mother lost her job with the school district, and they had to hire an attorney for him, using money that could have gone to his little brothers Leukemia treatments. One of the girls later lost her nerve, admitting they both spread the rumor to see how much trouble he would get in. The family cam out in the end (they basically wrung the district dry for expelling him and firing his mom without even looking into it) but that incident changed him forever. Even with the recanted testimony, it took a while to clear everything up, and he still would sometimes have to deal with people who still thought he was that kind of person. He went from being outgoing to being very reserved, and it took *years* before he started trusting people again. Because of this I never take statements at face value, I hate reality shows because they’re so often centered around lies and manipulation, and HATE people who spread rumors. It destroyed his life, his parents lives, and very nearly LITERALLY killed his little brother. Anyone for spreads rumors, especially if they k ow they’re not true, should be fucking ashamed of themselves.

Yeah those stuff fucks you up. I was raped when I was younger, so due to this I have a really hard time being comfortable with sexual relationships when im dating someone. After my breakup with my abusive ex (with whom I never had sex due to the afformentioned reason) she started telling people that I had raped her describing it in an identical mirror to what had happened to me (because I had told her about it because I trusted her). I ended up finding out about it when one day as I was out shopping minding my own business, a random girl started screaming at me calling me a rapist and how I should just end myself. Learned the deeper details of her lies from some mutual aquaintences afterwards. After that happened I stopped going to school and wasn't even able to leave my home without puking out of stress for a while. So I fully understand your friend, it's really hard to trust someone after something like that. I'm doing better now though, I moved to another city because even with treatment it was still really hard to deal with the anxiety of running into her and I honestly don't think ill be able to date anyone unless someone manages to truly make me trust them, but outside of that my life has pretty much gone back to normal

Happened to me and I lived on a farm, had no idea what I was being blamed for, I'm anti social and do go out much except my chores on the farm, apparently some kids beat up this girl and someone claimed I was part of the group, all boys had brown hair....I had reddish brown sure but I was sick that day... Well my father dragged me to the barn, tied me to the post and beat me with a 2 by 4 for nearly a hour.... He got arrested cause his drinking buddy walked in on him beating me and called the cops, I was 5 years old when it happened... Had to be rushed to be the hospital. I'm 30 years old now and cause of how bad the beating was still effects me physically to this day, I actually have to use a cane to get around some days. Whenever I complain about my back or knees, people joke saying I'm getting old... Been saying this since I was 14, I just laugh with them. Haven't talked to my family since I was emancipated was I was 16.

From my own experience, even if your parents believed in you and fought for you in front of the principal, something as serious as a sexual harrassment allegation would still caused quite a trauma for a 10 years old kid (me), plus getting ignored and walked past by someone you know and were close to, then being told "pretend like we don't know each other in school". I appreciate the way his character is portrayed. Its very different than a lot of other emo characters. He's emotionally numb, but not rude or unresponsive like a lot of emo characters are which is a good unique trait. And the way it shows his distrust in people affecting more than just his social life was a good touch that not many anime show. Edit: 2 months later and people still be challenging my use of the term "emo". I'm too lazy to change the term but petty enough to make this edit so SHUT UP ABOUT MY USE OF THE TERM I'LL USE IT HOWEVER I WANT TO.

Couldn't stop myself from crying a little towards the end, when the sister seems genuinely remorseful for maybe the first time. I wanted to say "Why? Why now? Why do you only care now, when it's too late? Why is it always like that?" (And, unspoken: I thought you were better than that.) Some very relatable feelings in this one. I'm sure there must be at least some personal experiences being channeled.

Why now? Because seeing the damage done can take a long while to sink in, especially when -- like the sister and the mother -- you've spent so much time rationalizing away your guilt for being a part of that damage. When he explained to his mother, "I don't trust you not to sabotage me," in that emotionless way, it made it very clear to both of them that he had long since written the two of them off. If the words had been filled with anger, or sadness, it would imply he stilled cared enough that reconciliation could have been a possibility. But that wasn't what we saw. How badly must you damage someone that you love and who loved you for them to simply give up on you like that? How thoroughly must you fail for them to go beyond anger or sadness or hope and wind up at apathy? His sister couldn't understand until he laid it out for the stepmother. "My faith in you has been completely and irrevocably destroyed."

I can relate to Makoto here. somewhere around 7th grade, i was accused to being a school bully by hitting a girl by accident. It was somewhat intentional but i was only joking for a bit later planning to apologize and brush it off, *DIDN'T AGE WELL ONE BIT.* Her whole damn family gathered up against me and my mother (dad's working aboard somewhere in Australia) and they literally making up excuses to get me well almost expelled, rumors spreads across the school and it didn't age really well again Everyday i attends at school all i hear around me is whispers, people gossiping about me being that kind of a person because before i tried my best to make friends and well be kind to everyone, but my anger issues and other mental problems only posing a threat to that goal in my school life, It was tough but not as tough as other people around the world who suffers way more than this. And if you're one of them, i edge for ya, try to heal yourself up from all the mental trauma they've caused for you and don't resorts to external solutions to solves internal problems. Peace, boys.

I have been thinking for a while how the girls expected him to just forgive them after what they have done to him, and I finally realized why they thought so. From the point of view of each of them, it was "only a rumor", nothing else. If it was only one rumor, he wouldn't had turned what he is now. However, it was not only ONE rumor, but many of them. The accumulation of those rumors and heart breaking caused the MC to simply collapse and ruin his confidence in others. This is why each girl thought they could just ask for forgiveness. They didn't realize the sum of all of their betrayals would have break the MC (heck, I think they didn't even KNEW other girls have betrayed him until they talk to each other). So, when they realized how bad they messed him up, they knew they just can't approach him directly anymore, as he doesn't trust them. They need someone else to "fix him" enough so he could trust others again, and as such he is open to accept their apology, but more importantly, that he "return to how he was before and start trust others". As someone who was bullied by people in the past but have made peace with that, I kind of understand their view. If one of the girls who messed me up came to ask me for forgiveness, she will only ask for HER part. She will NEVER see the whole picture, and how she was only one of the parts that made my life miserable. From her point of view, it was only a small thing, but from MY point of view, she is part of the whole problem. That is why they are surprised when the bullied one wont forgive them. From our PoV, is like they are asking for us to forgive EVERYTHING, which is VERY HARD to do so.

I'm pretty sure the one hit the hardest when realizing how hurt he had been was his stepmom. Sure the three girls felt remorse and didn't intend for things to get so far, but they knew early on that what they did was wrong, and the one who fake confessed knew as she was doing it, so they were complicit. His stepmother thought she was doing what was best for him, and it wasn't until she realized just how broken he was that she understood what her mistake of not trusting him meant. Each betrayer had their sobering moment of realization, but it was his stepmother who truly broke. I do give his stepsister credit for what she did in that moment though. She showed her conviction in making amends by understanding what he needed and breaking her own heart so he could have it. I think that's why he patted her head. For the first time since her betrayal she showed a genuine act of selflessness towards him. No fake apology, no requests to put it in the past, no brushing it off. Just a clear understanding that her, their mother, and the other girls screwed up bad, and he wasn't going to get better while they were still around. I could care less about the other girls getting forgiveness, but as much as I doubt it, I at least hope his stepmother and his sister are able to make amends with him. Also, does anyone else feel like this is a sort of anti-harem. It almost seems like if it weren't for the back to back betrayals this could have easily been another light hearted rom com.

Not all of those were that planned out. He was already being blamed by the time the childhood friend realized what happened but she was too shy to put herself out there to say anything, and the longer she said nothing, the more she feared taking his blame. Library girl had truthfully thought he was trying to force himself on her because she was too confused by the situation. Someone else claimed that the situation and she was at first hesitant to believe it only for the popularity she was getting swept her up till she completely forgot about what was true or not until the first day of high school when someone else admitted that they saw differently. (so f*ck that person) The sister had absolutely no reason to be acting like that. She wanted his attention all to herself but she hesitated to "eat the cake" she knew she didn't deserve, leaving him to be punished for the lies she added to the fire while the mother was blaming herself for "not teaching him right" instead of trying to listen to THE WORDS FROM THE PERSON WHO WAS THERE (doesn't matter if they're a child, at least try to understand them ESPECIALLY when they are yours) Still not good but can't say that they intended for the consequences that children just aren't equipped to handle. And not defending them either because kids are human too and men have their lives RUINED by the slightest lie, even after the truth comes out. (that's just how much power a woman has in this time of "equality")

The plot to make it up to him is a little misplaced, but seems to come from a place of genuine guilt. I also like how it sounds like his father supports him and is aware of his own mistake. And finally i like how he tells his step-mother how he really feels about her and instead of being angry she seems more shocked and unaware of just how much she contibuted to his negative growth. Its a nice grounded story about bulling and moving on.

It's bliss to have a reflective memory, it gives me a good reason to continue this strangely happy isolative behavior. Many people tend to say to never dwell on the past, but the past is what shapes a child. If you grow up in the wrong environment in any way shape or form, that will be reflected onto their adulthood in their mental, verbal, and physical attitude as well as tone. Neglect/abuse, being bullied, having no sense of belonging, a dysfunctional life in general, anything goes in this reality.

This kind of people make me sick. Framing them, ruining their reputation, spreading false rumors, then try to apologize out of nowhere and thinking they'll get them back instantly... Please. They're only fooling themselves. Things like this happened to me at my previous job. They put me through so much trouble, pranks, false accusations and more, and when they found out that I was getting ready to quit, they all apologized, thinking that showering me in kindness and promises of gifts would get me to go back. I refused them by saying nothing they could ever say and/or do would ever make it right. They ruined my life and I lost a lot of friends due to a "prank." I'm never going back there. Ever.

Sure, to some extent they did apologize, and to some extent they did realize they had hurt him, and their current attempts to "fix" things weren't going to work, but they seemed to waffle between feeling bad for themselves for what they'd thrown away and being upset with him that he refused to return to normal after their apologies.

Man, the family was the worst. The mom immediately believed all the accusations and the sister actively contributed to them. Its frankly amazing that the mom did not realize anything was her fault until he flat out told her to her face how her actions essentially broke him, and even called her out on her pathetic excuse with the truth: it was more convenient for her if he was a failure in her eyes. The sister did at least come to the realization that she did something unforgivable and actively tried to help her brother heal in the end. She also rightfully realized that they could never actively get him to forgive any of them; they were too late, and the only way they can get any absolution is if he personally decides to grant it.

Honestly I’m glad they added that bit. They can’t take back what they’ve done to Makoto, but better than them never even understanding how they indirectly have made him emotionally withdrawn. If they can’t accept how their actions affected him, all they become are ghosts from the past that constantly and physically haunt him, and to remind him why he should never open up to anyone. In accepting that, they understand that they’re only ever going to be in his way, and the only way they can support him is by staying out of his way. It’s true that “sorry” won’t fix the damage they’ve done, but they at least know what’s going to twist the knife and what will actually help him heal.
