BACKUP your essential data Regularly! Better to 2 places: external hard drive and to cloud storage. At any moment any computer drive could simply die. Of course ext. drive shall be safely disconnected after backup. If you've been hacked you must not connect ext. drive to restore data until system is clean of viruses. Better full format, reinstall operating system. Minimum - restore from the oldest restore point.

You clearly don’t know how ransomware works. Almost every type of modern ransomware runs a check if there is a external hard drive connected and it will encrypt the contents of it. Same goes for cloud storage.

Just get rid of windows problem solved. Linux don't get ransomware for one reason. The premissions are turned off by default on linux. You can even download virus and it can't execute on linux because it doesn't have premissions or root access.
