Lions fan here. I heard some discussion elsewhere that the man beater routes you were talking about were actually double moves and Darnold was waiting on those double moves to open up rather than throwing when a receiver wasn't expecting it. They showed the footage of the play being open initially and quickly, but the play playing out to a double move that the Lions were able to recover to and muddy up. I don't think you can blame Darnold for that, but rather the scheme or the chess match.
