Damn, the instrumental really depict the emotions. The pad starting out shows love, then when the string and brass ensemble kicks in, that's a devastating realization and emotions swelling. The trubal sounding percussion shows the rise of primal instincts whether triggered by anger or lust. The random fluttery sound effects you hear in the background represent confusion and self delusion that you are not yet aware of, hence why it's so quiet. The soft leads you hear throughout the song represent the reconciliation of your actions.

I love this song, its' elements are sort of primal in nature like the drums, expressing true human impulses or agitated heartbeats. The backgrounds' flowy synths, to me, feel like slowly losing track of your thoughts and letting them wander into the deep end (I guess kinda referencing the series in itself). The singers' vocal control give the vocals an almost robotic quality that add onto the whole flow of the song. The natural + digital sounds together make the whole composition sound like a descent into madness, along with little specks of reason: all driven by the narrator's feelings and pumping heart. I think that the ability to make people detest it so much is what makes it such a great show. People don't hate it because it's bad, they hate it because it was successful in instilling that emotion at that level. Hell, I hate it. But I liked it. If that makes sense. This anime just goes nothing but downhill from the very beginning, and it makes you hate everyone. Then in the end, just a little sympathy. Overall, it leaves you with a pretty disgusted feeling. A bad taste in your mouth. And that's brilliant.

I love the show. Despite by the last 3 episodes, utterly hating everyone except Katsura. The ending shocked me the first time around, but I grew to love it. It's a brilliant deconstruction of the harem/romance genre. Nothing I've heard of (in the romance/harem genre) since this came out ever went the dark route, and that saddens me. So many shows are generic and boring with predictable, lovey characters, who you can barely find relatable... But this? This was different, and better for it.

Agreed, even if it's not realistic in every aspect, it's still much more realistic than what your typical school harem would be. I don't say only animes like these can be realistic, but this anime really showed us why harems in real life can be bad, why playing with others' feelings can not be a good thing, etc. People who decide it as "totally unrealistic and shit characters" obviously haven't seen similiar cases in real life.

When I was 12/13 in junior high I started a run watching almost a romance anime per night, I discover some great masterpieces, great memories remain from those days, when I reach School Days on my list I couldn't finish it, I missed like the last 2 episodes, and, despite the fact it's ending is very iconic and controversial I had completely forget about it after seeing it, many years have passed and I just finished it, it was awesome that I discover the traumatic ending so many years after

In the visual novel, you can make the choice of either making Makoto a genuine, nice and overall moral person or a sick, twisted, utter piece of human filth like shown in the anime. You can make him go for any of the girls depending on who you find the most appealing, YOU have the choice of shaping him into whatever you want. Seems like the writers of the anime added some twist to the material that eventually made the anime completely different from any other of the genre it's categorized as. Not to say it's a bad thing... it's uniquely genius in my opinion. And in many ways realistic as well. ...what do you think?

well, i love the VN, i've just ever accomplished 2 endings, "Christmas Eve" and "After the kiss" (the path where you don't cheat on Kotonoha), but they are enougth for me, the neat thing of the VN is that you turn the story into your own, and my Makoto's place is to be beside Kotonoha, to love her. Actually the concept of the VN as a whole is love, and i'm not able to see a better way of portraying this complex emotion than a story with multiple paths, we can all agree that love is not a game, that when you love someone it's almost like there's no one else in the world than her/him, you can choose Makoto to love, but you can choose him to play, both lead to a different conclussion, much like a reflection of the real world. The game it's not perfect but i'm willing to overlook his flaws, because i don't know many games with love as its core theme, and those i know are not as good as this is portraying it, the anime though, to me, It hurts to watch, because of how fond i am with the character of Kotonoha (i'm similar, almost identical to her when It comes to love), but i think it's just a "bad ending", it's what happens when you not only choose to play, but also to hurt. It really bothers me that, usually, people don't take School Days with the amount of seriousness that should be taken to enjoy It and understand what is telling us, this is not a basic game with a basic message: cheating is bad, end, it's a very complex one trying to explain a subjective feeling, involving the viewer in the process and i think thats what makes It brilliant and memorable, it's what makes me come time to time to play again, even if It is repeating one of my two routes, i still enjoy It to the full, that is what i think :) sorry for the rant, i have pretty strong feelings for this story [^~^]

I have a love/hate relationship with the anime. On one hand I can't stand the flanderisation of Makoto from someone who means well and genuinely cares, but is woefully indecisive, innocently insensitive, almost completely incapable of reading people and a touch of a perv to a truly vile person that I despised, so consumed with lust and power over others that he just doesn't care about anyone anymore so long as he gets what he wants. On the other hand I can appreciate the character development going from that naive fool to the aforementioned monster to the ending where he realises how badly he's screwed up and decides to make the right choice, but is such a prick about it that it gets him killed. It does show his corruption pretty well from normal guy to scarily reminiscent of his father and brother. Still, anime!Makoto can't even hold a candle to Cross Days!Makoto. Cross Days twisted him into a truly evil beast. The anime at least shows a descent into monstrosity with the faintest flicker of hope there, but Cross Days takes that flicker and pisses all over it, cackling all the while. Still, I did genuinely enjoy the manga. Still got its own tragic, fucked-up ending which I won't spoil but keeping Makoto's desire to do the right thing and his flaw of not knowing how the hell he's going to do that or even what the right thing is. In the anime I was satisfied with Makoto's fate; in the manga I felt sorry for him. It's arguably, from a certain point of view, worse than being stabbed to death, especially since the manga version was a decent person trying to figure out the right decision while the anime version was pretty much addicted to sex and gave no shits about anyone.

There was a murder some days earlier that looked similar to the ending, so they instead added serene scenes of nature and the like. One scene included a ferry crossing a lake. I was sipping my morning cup of coffee, expecting to sign some more papers. Go over some reports of hit and runs, drug busts, the usual. Nothing too exciting, but those days were the easiest. My secretary walks in, with a grim look on her face. I drove over to the school as quickly as I could with Detective Yamamoto. Good kid, just got recently promoted, but he's still a beat cop at heart. Not after today. I run up the stairs to the roof with Mr. Yamamoto. Fellow detectives and officers are already on the scene. I push through and felt my face run cold at the sight of the body. Yamamoto had to look away and almost lost his breakfast, but he composed himself rather quickly. He's already growing up. Coroner comes up to me. Victim identified as Sekai Saionji. Jugular vein severed, abdomen eviscerated right down the womb. Time of death estimated at around 10PM last night. Massive pool of blood that had flowed from the victim's neck. What the literal bloody hell, I thought. Donning gloves I crouched down to the corpse. She looked like she was sweet, had spice and everything nice, were she still alive. But now her eyes are blank and faded, and just stare back at me in an eternal, lifeless gaze. Without thinking I gently ran the back of my gloved hand on her face, wondering what her last thoughts were right before she was murdered. Poor girl. I noticed the kitchen knife right by her hand. Was that the murder weapon? Why was it so close to her hand? Was she defending herself? Planted there by the murderer? Everyone doubted it was suicide, the coroner theorized that the relative lack of blood near the abdomen was a result of the jugular injury being made first and causing massive blood loss that quickly would have been fatal, but he'd have to confirm it in the official autopsy. The less said about that autopsy, the better. Yamamoto comes up to me with a cell phone, found in the girl's pocket. There was a final email conversation on it on from last night from 9:46PM, asking her to meet him on the roof. From a Mr. Makoto Itou. Oddly enough, Ms. Saionji sent a really long email to him, at around 9:08PM. All just to say "I'm sorry......Goodbye". The fuck happened? Attendance records show Mr. Itou isn't in class today. Convenient timing for a cold. A student speaks to a fellow detective confirming that Itou and Saionji were romantically involved, before having a bad breakup following whispers he knocked her up. Sounded like a real gentleman. We quickly get an arrest warrant signed and go to pay Saionji's flame a visit. Yamamoto and I had our boys kick down the apartment door. We go in and find Itou's bedroom. There was nothing easy about that day.

Amazing. This song along with quite a few aspects of the story as well. Such a shocking spin on romantic comedy anime and it's still such a touching song. I think the anime team made a pretty interesting choice to go with a bad route and it definitely made for an impactful end.
