It’s 25th December & I’ve had a bit of a stressful night at work but now (at 5.29am) I’m listening to Karl & I’ve found my mojo to continue, I hope he realises that he makes people happy. That’s a quality which should be envied- I try my best working with adults with learning disabilities but last night I bought in ‘An idiot abroad ‘ dvd & we laughed our socks off until 2am! Karl is the only person I know of who can go from the 0 mph of indifference to the 60 mph of passionate anger in a few seconds. He needs no help, nobody has to say a word. In fact, I've seen him do it in a room all by himself. Moreover, it doesn't even have to be a subject that has an effect on his life. It could be anything from the 'slow' development of infant humans to unnecessary jellyfish. Similarly, Karl can go from the 0 of hearing brand new information to the 60 of creating an opinion off the back of that information and clinging to it like it's one of his core beliefs. I actually think Karl has a pretty sweet reason for being a bad gift giver. As a child he was an enthusiastic giver and even saved up to get his mother something he thought she would really love. But it was such a horrible experience and so demoralizing and confidence crushing that he’s unable to bear gifting now. It’s totally fair and nice of him. He only wants to do the right thing and is clearly purely motivated by wanting to avoid disappointing his loved ones as well as (understandably!) needing to protect his own self esteem by avoiding a repeat incident. I have the exact same fear as Karl, all due to one horrible ‘friend’ in the past who made a particularly nasty and public remark about me, to my face, about my, to quote ‘shit taste’. This came just a couple of weeks after her birthday party and I took it as a direct comment on my gift as well as my dress sense. Now I’m slightly older and wiser I have gotten over the nastiness about my personal dress style, mostly because I get compliments all the time from people, mostly men, on my appearance, and helped greatly by her penchant for wearing stone wash high waisted jeans in a too-small size, resulting in blatant camel toe. So I’ve come to believe that it’s possibly her with her poor taste and I’m okay with that evidence behind me, but despite all that I’m still stricken by terror on giving gifts to people and end up giving gift cards or generic things like chocolate, which make people think I’m careless and not interested, rather than the truth, which really is that I just care too much and don’t want to let them down. But at least Karl’s mum only unintentionally hurt Karl;my so called friend publically humiliated me and caused people to laugh in my face as I reeled in horror. Some people are just rotten.
