Yo guys! COMMENT and tell me if you've ever caught a calico bass, and if so, what techniques do YOU use for them and what's your favorite way to cook them up? If you've never caught a calico, think you'd enjoy it? Why?
@enskayakfisherman5 жыл бұрын
I am fishing calico bass every single Sunday, as you said is really fun, using a small set up is like fishing for yellowtails :), I use also surface iron, that normally give me big calicos. I would say the way Lulu cooked the calico is the best, you can add some shrimp and cheese believe me dude, that is delicious! Cheers!
@jtonneck5 жыл бұрын
Robert Field I’ve caught them the same way with kitech plastics or fly line sardines

Love catching Calicos in LaJolla. Same place you fished with Kevin N. My go to is a suspending waxwing in 30-60’ deep.

Mostly catch them on plastics. Brown is defiantly the best color. But have caught a few on yo-zuri jerk baits. #SoCal

Thinking about putting a rig down at East Cape for a home and exploring the entire West Coast of Baja California Sur in a kayak and maybe a Tandem Island if heading offshore 10+ miles for tuna is an option. Will know by the end of the year. I’ve seen surf fishermen catch Mahi Mahi from shoes along with Cubera and Sierra
@SouthwestKayakFishing5 жыл бұрын
Exciting to fish the kelp in a Kayak!!! It’s on my bucket list! I like to fish light extra fast rods such a 7’6” Phenix inshore assassin maybe 10-25#’s with a Revo Beast, 50# braid/20# Fluoro top-shot. If im not swimming a 5” big hammer on a 3/4oz lead head, I like dropping a rootbeer jerk shad or fluke on a 1/4 to 3/8 dart head or something similar soaked in procure calico cocktail straight down into the kelp or between strands!
@YakFishField5 жыл бұрын
Those are great techniques, but your light tackle might bite you in the rear once they get around that kelp. Still, I'm all for a challenge! The 2nd half of this episode airs in a little over an hour!

For calicos, spotties, and sandies don't set the hook so hard. Just raise the rod tip and reel like mad. Awesome video.
@YakFishField5 жыл бұрын
I'm far from an expert, but that is NOT advice that I agree with. At least when you're hooking them on these giant swimbaits, a strong hookset is NECESSARY. There's a lot of plastic that hook has to penetrate through.

You need to drop the rod tip wind and then set the hook. They need a sec to turn their heads. Also never wind directly in front of the rod, always a 45 degree angle with the line

@YakFishField5 жыл бұрын
Man, I disagree. At least with these big weedless swimbaits, you GOTTA set the hook. The ones I missed were when I set the hook late. That's a lot of plastic for that hook to penetrate before it finds fish... with most techniques, I'm sure you're right, but with these swimbaits you have to set it HARD. The harder I set it, the more fish I landed actually.
