This is very interesting! The rock formations always intrigued me. I appreciate knowing a bit more about it now. I went to school at Central in Ellensburg (68-72), then lived in Yakima for a few years. I drove the canyon many, many times during that time. It's always been one of my favorite places. During my college years, I actually helped organize the first canyon bicycle ride as part of a class project. The road was closed to cars and trucks for the day. We ended up with nearly 2,000 riders. It was a great place to ride!

Prof. Nick, I'd like to see your comments on where the John Day river broke through the canyon wall west of Dayville. The river at one time flowed due west.

That's a cool area, Robert. I'm just getting started learning about central Oregon.

I love geology, the pacific northwest entices me so much. I want to travel there and explore, and take a few classes or something. Can you take geology lessons without being in college?

lI found that unless you have a topographical map, it's hard to see where the ridges are when you're in the canyon. The hills are so steep, it's hard to tell where you're at while in the canyon.

what is the lands slide across from rosa recreation in the canyon? I was told it wasn't a slide at all but from mining is that true?

So that's why all the strata lines are at almost a 45 degree angle.

Yes, folding caused the layers to tilt. Thanks.

Guy at 0:50 does a "back flop" into the river and almost did a face plant at 0:49 into the rock face.
