The original idea of a B-17 was that it wouldn't need a fighter escort. If you ever look at one it has guns literally everywhere. It wasn't until later in the war that this idea proved to be ineffective. It's why the B-29 actually had less defensive weapons than a B-17.

The Axis PoweR Pre-War Japanese "engineering" wasn't exactly a compliment, bro. sure, their planes were maneuverable, but they were also tinderboxes that blew up with one or two hits. their tanks were so thin-skinned heavy machine guns could knock some of them out. Some of their infantry rifles dated back to the Russo-Japanese war, and their machine guns weren't much younger. then there was the issue of how all of their weapons seemed to use different-caliber bullets, and how their pistols were utter crap, and...eh, i could go on.

The Axis PoweR fat lot of good better planes do you when all your skilled pilots are at the bottom of the Pacific, sunk by "inferior" American aircraft and ships... Kinda hard to talk about Japanese "engineering" without talking about ALL their weapons, man. you can't just look at one aspect of their technology and apply that to all their weapons. That a pre-war tank design and weapons like the M3 37mm anti-tank gun were still effective against Japanese tanks all through the war shows how ineffective the Japanese tanks were. look at their tank assault on Saipan, none of the Japanese tanks survived, while not a single US tank was knocked out. ah yes, one of the most powerful Navies....that never developed Radar, put far too many resources into useless giant battleships, and was torn apart by the ships and aircraft of the US fleet. Japan lost the resource and technology war, as well as the manufacturing war.

inoue jerry the Japanese were developing tanks almost as long as tanks existed: their first machines were surplus British WWI tanks, and they started their own development program in the early 20's. the Type 89 "medium" was one of the results of these tests. the battle of Khalkin Gol in 1939, where Japan fought superior units of Soviet armor, should have demonstrated that if they intended to face a superior Western army, they needed modern ground assets in strength.

There is a reason why you get escort fighters. One of them is so they don't get wrecked by interceptors armed with derpy 57mm cannons that would have considerable trouble dogfighting.

The problem is the extreme range. I'm sure the Germans would have provided a fighter escort if they could, but unless it was so laden down with extra fuel tanks as to be useless in a dogfight, no fighter plane of that era could accompany a long-range bomber all the way to the target. If you're attacking Europe or Japan from bases nearby, sure, but a flight from occupied Europe to Japan would never be able to have fighter protection for the whole flight.

The P-51 had a maximum range of 1,650 miles, or 2,656 kilometers. The B-29's, for example, was 3,250 miles, or 5,220 kilometers. So, no, it absolutely could NOT, or at least not if it were flying out of anywhere further away than Okinawa or mainland China, which they did. However, the hypothetical German equivalent would not have the opportunity to do this, as in this scenario I believe Japan still firmly held on to its territory in China and the Pacific.

I believe they took off from Okinawa, yes. Also, the Enola Gay didn't have a direct escort; the weather planes - also B-29s - flew over something like an hour ahead of time, and the P-51s hung back, which makes sense given the projected power of the bomb.

I've now viewed a number of clips from assorted Japanese air warfare themed animations, and find many of the imaginative aircraft designs are impressive. Many are so extreme, they stretch credibility, while others are just to the "left" of what might have been. The reasonable designs show clear lineage from an existing air frame: the Ohka is clearly the parent of the "Super jets", with enough differences to make them dramatic. One of my interests is production design, and have found there often needs to be a compromise between what an engineer would (grudgingly) accept, and what a director wants to put on screen to capture an audience.

Japan had a larger problem looming in 1945 than America - history is often forgotten but Stalin wanted Japan invaded by Oct 1945 with the intention of beating the American invasion he thought would happen in early 1946.

Stalin might have Wanted to invade Japan. But the USSR lacked the Amphibious capability let alone capacity to invade the Japanese home islands. I will grant that the USSR could capture the port of Pusan, Korea; that would be like the Allies trying to invade Spain from the port of Cherbourg, Normandy, France, a month after capturing it. Look up the MASSIVE Fleet of cargo vessels, not to mention specialized Amphibious landing craft and warships just to cross the English Channel. Two years of preparation. Next consider the Armadas, larger than those used to land in Normandy, necessary to invade Iwo Jima and then Okinawa. Soviet logistics would have to go by train across the Trans-Siberian railroad. Where do they get the ships? Vladivostok? The USSR wouldn't have the capability to invade Japan by October 1965!

The design of the wings are for much slower planes like prop driven planes, if used for high speed jets they will just tear off and it will fly just like a cannon shell.

The A-10 Warthog uses a similar wing design and the MXY-7 Ohka kamikaze rocket propelled bomber also used a similar wing design, so an early generation jet fighter would be able to get away with a straight wing rather than a swept wing since they would not be going that fast for a jet. They would just have to reinforce the wing to cope with the additional stress , but it would not be in insurmountable problem.

1973Washu A-10 Warthog is one of the few modern planes that went subsonic speed only. As for Ohka, it a suicide rocket-boost aircraft. You does not need wing if it going to blew up right? The aircraft shown above is moving above the speed of sound so swept wing is able to avoid any wings from being ripped when used at supersonic speed. A usual straight wing cannot sustain such drag power from the wind at supersonic speed.

because the writer/designer of this story or anime doesnt know anything about warfare. those bombers were obviously inspired by the USAF high altitude bomber which didnt fly with escorts because they literally flew higher than anything else at the time, including anything that japan had to throw at it. and the interceptor is obviously inspired by japans rocket propelled kamikaze plane which was a poor choice. modifying the shinden would have been a better choice in my opinion although adamantly harder to animate.

From the looks of it, seems like a hybrid Rocket and Jet Interceptor modification of the Ohka suicide bomber. The plane was launch with the help of catapult and rocket engine and then proceed to fly with the jet engine after detaching the rocket engine. This plane would prove to be difficult to land, there could be a parachute somewhere installed on the plane to help with its landing. The armament shows that this plane was specialized in intercepting slow moving target. The gun low rate of fire making this plane unsuitable for dogfighting. If the German had escort fighters these interceptors would have had a hard time intercepting their bomber target.

The Japanese were pretty much the Germans of the Pacific. They both had amazing vehicles and some of the best crews, but the allies could outlast them. The Germans and the Japanese just couldn't keep their superior quality up, while the allies could keep a constant quality going. Although in the end the allies crews far outmatched the axis ones, because the allies had more resources to train them and keep a good pace at the same time.

+Wizard 03 most of the ships might be good, but not the carriers, they lacked external venting systems for the hangers. this forced the crew to open hatches to thin out the aviation fumes so they didn't pass out. problem was that now almost the entire ship was a highly volatile bomb waiting to go boom. only other main problems with ijn ships was lack of trained crew among the sailors especially damage control an anti-air defence.....take a look at the fate of the Yomato and its sister ship.

There's another question, the X-15 and the X-1 we're use titanium and high quality steel. Japanese poor industrial standards and lack of materials in WW2 was hard to produce heat resistant material to create supersonic aircraft (e.g.:shushui rocket plane exploded in it's first flight in 1945). And normally, large caliber guns produce huge recoil, thus affect flight stability, it may result in structure breakdown( which can destroy the aircraft by itself), vibration( hard to aim and firing next round) , and fatal injury for the pilot inside(when the g-force and the recoil from the gun contact together). So that's why we've don't found any jet fighters exist in post war didn't use large guns with 57mm, they replace it with rockets( soviet was the first user in 1930's, the RS-82 family), missiles and autocannons between 20-30mm.

I just read the synopsis of this series. As soon as I read "they easily defeat the allies in Asia liberating the former colonies and giving them back their independence" I was just thinking "Fuck off" with a smile. It'd be all well and good if the main characters that went back in time were liberal scientists and engineers from modern Japan but they're not, they're both imperialist that was supposed to have been killed during the war, a politician and the other an admiral, and despite that, they're conveniently aware of how to make technology that would have been ridiculously advanced even at the time of their deaths and are also staunch anti-imperialists. I'm British, this anime is the equivalent of me sending Montgomery and Churchill back in time and having them just shout "Hang on chaps! We'll quickly show you have to make a nuke, jet engine and nuclear submarine and also about this whole Empire business, we think it's all a bit old hat!" I just find overly patriotic stuff cringy, doesn't really matter where it's from. There's this trope in British TV that occasionally pops up where you have an overly arrogant American being outwitted by someone from Britain and it just reeks of inferiority complex.

But Japanese army was not "roughly equal" Soviet were much more advanced in terms of land equipment than Japanese... Japanese had their navy going for them which would be useless against USSR ... They could not have stretched their forces like Germany did and would have gotten kicked from both China and USSR. Germans on the other hand were losing Stalingrad and D-day as you say "US distraction" came after Germans were getting pushed back. It would have just taken a little longer without USA.

Japan and Germany were allies as the US and UK. As far as Tech Japan spent money on aircraft carriers, and Germany planes and tanks. This Anime had Yamamoto transported back in time and correcting all of Japan’s mistakes in the war. Apparently the Rocket Kamikaze planes were redesigned as fighters in this time line.
