I gotta say I absolutely adore Dead Souls, enough so that I wrote a full guide for it. It's such a weird piece of history in the series and has a lot of charm to be found within it. The story is nice since it has literally no stupid or annoying plot twists plus you've got the best characterization for all of the main characters (this is BY FAR the best version of Akiyama and Majima). The combat's definitely not great but I feel once you realize all your camera/aiming/shooting is directly based on your character's orientation it makes it a lot easier to get used to. I really feel Dead Souls shines on replays since it's so swift to get through, even if you do all the side content, and there aren't many sections of the game that require much thought to get through (plus it actually has effort put into it unlike the two remakes in the series).

It feels like the devs should have taken more inspiration from Dead Rising. A Dragon Engine version of Dead Souls with a larger shift towards melee crowd combat (and more durable melee weapons) might be interesting, although I'd rather see it as a complete re-imagining of the concept than a remaster or remake.

I would prefer an emphasis on guns personally, it is a zombie game and seeing our main cast use guns is refreshing after so long using fist and melee weapons. Though it could be best to take the Ishin approach and give players multiple options (albeit said options will be weaker than just having one option).

Harukas got some questionable ass shit in this game, and after the scene in y4 with saejima, i strongly question some of the devs at RGG in the ps3 era. A stupid easy way to make like iver 10 million yen is the second purgatory opens just use the cheat item for roulette and buy 1000 chips so when you win you get 36000 chips and just fill up on platinum plates the other is saving before you go to baccarat and just keep winning and saving in between while quitting to menu every loss and do that to 100,000 chips and you will never worry about money ever again

But the one thing i remember about that place is that everyday they would praise Yakuza Dead Souls. And at this point even if Dead Souls is shit i unironically love it.

Old video I know... You nailed it... Even playing it on emulator was a good idea... I haven't suffered any bad frame rates but what gets me is the incessant load times between every clip of a cutscene... Every area...just about every everything. And yes, the combat is absolute garbage. Someone said to treat this game more like an RPG than a third person shooter... Can see that because you're constantly taking damage which is unavoidable. More often than not your spamming your weapons till they're out of ammo and then relying on your infinite ammo weapons. Battles over heal up and move on. But I can't get over how bad it feels to explore. None of the quests have any kind of marker. The stages are so badly built that I constantly find myself returning to the point I came in. Honestly, after trying to run just three side quests I decided that I wanted nothing to do with any side quest, any mini game or any anything beyond just running straight through the story and getting this game over with...🤷🏻‍♂️

Finally managed to get a physical copy for my PS3. Still somewhat fun. Although (because psn is dead and I can’t download the free dlc items) the grinding for certain items is nigh on insufferable. I was practically pulling my hair out trying to get aggro medals and fattie forks for half of my play through. Still I agree. The only other complaint I have with the game is that idk if it’s my controller or what, but sometimes when I’m in over the shoulder (L1) mode, the camera will just straight up not want to go to the left, which has gotten me stuck a few times. Despite all that though, while it is a weird black sheep and a low point for the series, I still consider it to be an alright game.
