Watching the end of the video reminded me of the famous passage from "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath: "I saw my life branching out before me like a green fig tree. From the tip of the branch, like a purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned. I saw myself sitting underneath this fig tree, starving to death because I couldn't make up my mind on which of the figs to choose". I often reread this quote whenever I'm at a crossroads because it reminds me that making a decision is better than not choosing anything. I hope this quote is helpful in your current stage of life!

I'm glad you're feeling better about your time for the dissertation (based on your comments!)! I just wanted to say that I appreciate the vulnerability from someone who has a similar situation to me. I'm working full time because I'm basically in my dream job or at least am in a great spot to continue growing into my dream job (and I cannot survive on the PhD stipends). The PhD is a big part of opening up my future options, my professional development, AND I'm passionate about it! I've been hearing some pretty discouraging advice/stances from some academics about working outside of your PhD, and it has me in my head about my progress in my degree. It sucks to feel like you're being pulled in too many different directions when all of them are important to you.

Thank you for sharing your trips to the archives! This is for selfish reasons, but your chronicled trips make me so nostalgic, and too, excited for (hopefully) upcoming visits to the archives. Also, glad to hear that simplifying has been a positive experience for you 😊

Kaelyn, thank you so much for sharing your vulnerability and behind the door of being PhD student. I'm history student too, and currently working on my undergraduate thesis. These last few weeks was hard for me because I couldn't see myself finish this thesis on time, but think that I'm not alone; I just need more courage and believe to work on this. I hope you, other students challenged with such difficulties and I will find ease on this journey. Thank you so much!

Always insightful into the struggle of the life of a PhD candidate, currently supporting a 4th year through the ups and downs. All the best for writing the dissertation. You’ve got this 👊🏼

Yesterday, my Research Methods professor said something that I will always remember. "I'll never be perfect, but I can be better". Just remember not to stretch yourself too thin ❤

I can relate to how you feel. Not entirely but I do definitely understand. I had 2 jobs for most of my undergrad while going to school part time and it was really hard and exhausting. There were times where I was crying almost everyday because I was so tired. And there were so many opportunities at school I passed up because I had to work to support myself. So please be gentle to yourself, you can do it!❤✨🍀

Hey. I’m a new sub - came because I was excited to see a PhD candidate in History from an American university - and thought I’d share one small tip. I am much older than you but I am also working on a big, complicated project. I recently watched another KZbinr, Olly Staniland, who talked about his Dopamine Journal. I’ve tried it now for a month and it’s been quite helpful. I scaled down the scope of his idea, but I really appreciate the practice of taking a moment every day to jot down one simple bright, uplifting point from the day. It lets me know I’m still on track. Anyway, you’re doing important work and I’m cheering you on. Take care.

Something has to give working full time and studying is hard I basically worked and spent all weekend studying and tried to study 2 hours a night as well, apart from my partner I gave up my social life and limited exercise to running 5kms at 5am 4 mornings a week - that was absolutely all I could do. You can’t have it all, you need to face facts you can’t go for coffees, go riding etc this stuff has to wait it will still be there when you finish. Yes its tough but its so worth it

Trust me, giving it 3 hours a day is ENOUGH. I was also working a full-time job and managed to complete my entire dissertation. I spent maybe 3 - 4 hrs during the week and all day Saturdays with writing. Once you have a sense of direction, you'll figure out what is best and how you can work your schedule with writing.

Hang in there Kaelyn. I'm a student with a daytime job as well. Currently I'm pretty burnt out. I'm going to try and save up as much money as I can so that next year I can just study, do an internship and not work. It's risky but I don't see any other way. Thank you for being honest and vulnerable.

Thanks for still sharing your journey with us! Something I did with my dissertation that really helped move things along is that I shaped my research question around an interesting data set I had already found, versus having a very specific question and then spending a lot of time hunting for never-ending data. The second approach is probably great for a book you can spend a decade on but a dissertation doesn’t need to be your life’s work. Granted, I’m not a historian so maybe this is not possible for you, but can you maybe pivot your research question a bit to focus more tightly on archival data you already have catalogued? Also… is that Manacled I spot on your Kindle? 👀

There’s a quote I heard a while ago that’s along the lines of “you can do a lot of things good/well or one thing great”, it reminds me it’s okay to do a lot good. Good is still good. I also remember that things that things that are more artistic will never reach that magical level of “perfect”. But I ask myself: is it good to you? Are you happy/satisfied with the level of good that it is at? And if that’s yes, then that’s enough for me.

Sending hugs and good vibes to help you figure this out. I think it's a great thing that you are showing how hard everything is. People need reality these days. Do you have someone who edits your videos for you? I can't remember - just thinking maybe it would free up some time. Or a short hiatus to let you focus on research (I used to watch an author who did that every summer for like a month - just for a mental health break). Tell Hermione to turn over the time turner! Good luck and best wishes!

I'm not sure what your current schedule is, but is it possible to work your full time job on a compressed schedule so that maybe you would work 10 hour days 4 days a week and then have one free day every week to focus on the dissertation?
