2021 commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Pacific Alliance. Join us for a panel discussion featuring scholars and experts as they dived into the historical developments of the trade route between Manila and Acapulco, where Asian merchandise and luxurious goods were traded across the Pacific. Learn about how this contributed to greater economic links, deeper relationships, and opportunities between countries and regions in today’s globalised world.
Panellists:
Florina H. Capistrano-Baker - Project Consultant and Consulting Curator, Ayala Foundation, Inc.
Cuauhtemoc Villamar - Mexican Independent Researcher on the Pacific History
Clement Onn - Principal Curator (Asian Export Art & Peranakan), Asian Civilisations Museum
Raquel A.G. Reyes - The Science History Institute, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (in 2022)
Moderator:
Matthew Reeder - Assistant Professor of Humanities (History), Yale-NUS College

How far Manila has fallen from its glory days. I hope this history can be revived in the Philippines.

Why is Manila not included - you are missing the historic element of this link

I think the presentations by Ms Capistrano-Baker and Mr Onn were very well done. Good visual materials and it felt like both talked about their subjects rather than read a script. Ms Reyes's presentation was not only without visual aids, it felt like it was being read from passages in a book or paper. The weakest presentation of the event. Mr Villamar's presentation was a recital of the words his slides, and then the slides and speech went unsynchronised. He redeemed himself with solid, unscripted answers during the Q&A. Clearly he knows his subject. Just needs to better understand what slides offer to the presenter. 'Something for me to read to you' isn't it. Organiser should have reviewed the material and each presenter's speaking plan before putting them on stage, so to speak.
