I think if you actually looked at this in a holistic view with the understanding of security cooperation within the ASEAN community...you would see that the presence of US, UK, Japan, and the Aussies is brought upon by requests. We as a western society do not generate the "tension"...we act as a deterrence to prevent conflict. You mention broken homes, devastated economies, and immense sufferings...please research the uyghurs, fulan gong, Hong Kong democracy protests, Tiananmen Square, and Khmer Rouge....I think you will see that western presence is requested and appreciated because of the gross atrocities created and committed by the CCP. As a veteran that has found a calling in geopolitical research after life in the military, I can tell you with absolute certainty.... the ignorance or neglect to this problem only enables history to repeat itself.

Correct. The US really only wants one thing, maintain its global hegemony. It will stop at nothing, until it is stopped, to achieve that end. China really has little choice regarding the South China Sea. It is vital to the transport of goods to and from China, which the Americans and their allies are trying create a choke point. Hence the robust military presence by the Chinese there. The analogy is like this: A factory owner is building his business and has good products wanted by many customers. He is however surrounded by rival business owners, who have hired thugs threatening to hijack and interdict shipment of products from the factory. And in the meantime, keeps telling others that this factory makes bad product (see comments below for examples). What does the factory owner do? Fold his business and cower in fear? Or make sure there can be no disruption to the shipment of raw materials and goods to make his business successful?

Their livelihoods depend on access to sea lanes, the fish and hydrocarbons to be found off their coastlines. The CCP's ridiculous claim to SCSea robs these nations of much of their exclusive economic zones. SKorea and Vietnam will require a permission slip from the CCP to access sea lanes. The world has moved on little emperor- the constellation of smaller nation states prevails, not imperial empires that the CCP aspires to.

When the American moderator referred to China as "more repressive at home" (5:40) you know where he's trying to steer the forum. The European speaker was also strangely (perhaps understandably) selective when talking about China's relationship with its neighbours. Its relationship with Japan (2 invasions of China in recent times), Taiwan (still technically at war with the mainland) are strained but remarkable in that despite all the problems hasn't deteriorated into wars. China still supplies Taiwan with vital water and food, while cross-straits trade has been increasing over the years. Same with Japan. Both countries have investment in China which are welcomed. As for China's other neighbours, barring India, the relationship has been nothing short of warm and friendly. China is building rail and other major infrastructures in Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. Sure, there are border disputes, but most ASEAN countries have such disputes among themselves yet no one single out any of them as being overbearing. Even in this Asian-based forum, one can see that the western participants are quite myopic and keen to push their selective perspectives.

This talk has turned into a debate between the passive aggressive chair-person, Burt, & the rest of the guests. American Burt could hardly contain himself, with the way he bristled with indignation, by his guests' opinions. I'm glad he got schooled, in an abstract manner and I must say the then palpable tension could be felt belatedly, watching this video days and weeks after. The paradox of this talk is that the majority of the guests are centrists in their views but there is a keen sense that Burt wanted a panel that were totally pro-American continued & he clearly wasn't pleased.

He was actually disappointed, and body language doesn't lie, after Kishore's objective description of South East Asia's relationship with China, and problems in the Taiwan Straits and The DiaoYu Islands. My opinion - China has major crisis at home - population, housing, water, economy. Wealthy exert power. Minorities and atrocities. Border unrest. Populations in centers understand these problems and China maintains over 100,000 (at times 200,000,) police in Hong Kong alone to control population unrest. People understand the socialism is trying to be forced into nationalism. China's real problem lies therein, in my opinion. These same countries they have spent 20 years buying on cheap and/or stealing info from are going through same socialist/nationalist movements. Populations will feel violated over 'The East' forcing trade and culture while hoarding wealth. They are gonna have to deal with Korea, ROC, all SE Pacific, Russia, India, Afghanistan, Europe, Africa and South America. France does not want them or Russia in South America and both SA and Africa are fraught with as much peril as Afghanistan. Also, those regions face competition from all major countries. China should have chilled with rhetoric and not forced military expansion, in my opinion. Or, they should have taken ROC by electronic espionage and force a few years ago. At this point, the world has chess pieces in place against China expanding via traditional arms. Their trade and currency is stretched. They absolutely need to expand for several reasons. Their ports and major builders' stocks have taken large hits. World knows what China has been up to and what they face.

If we look at the growth trajectory of China in the last forty years, of course, we can say this is unparallel in human history. The US and the West stood stunned and never ever wanted to say that all this happened under Socialism or Communism was a miracle. As a result, the US decided to glorify India as a counterbalance almost parallel with China in terms of Economic growth but failed. It seems to me that Holman is less than objective in his moderation of this discussion: He seeks criticism of China and skepticism concerning the solidity of its rise…premised largely on his biased perspectives on the West. But as Kishor hinted, the US has been a belligerent power…with 800 military bases around the world. And China achieved a free run, precisely because America and the West were engaged in illegal and quite foolish wars in Central Asia and economic and financial criminality that led to 2008. I would disagree with the "angry" dragon concept, since China has never been an imperialist power the way the US has been since abusing Mexico and taking so much land from them, then abusing Spain and so on, with the exception of the Mongols, who in turn were forced to attack areas within China when they were deprived of food, and of course never forgetting the invasion by Gengis Khan era mongols... The fleet put together by Admiral Zheng He, was so big and powerful that not even current US Navy would be the equivalent... To prove this: One of Zheng's Treasure ships, built around 1420, would accomodate 4 'Carabelas' used by Christopher Columbus 70 years later (and portuguese 'naos') which ultimately conquered the world... And that powerful fleet was never used to invade ANY other country, even if it could... Only they did militarily was helping a friend king to suppress a little rebellion... What China has wantes is to have all chinese speaking people under their 'protective' roof... This explains why sooner or later Taiwan will be reunified, hopefully not by force, which would be a huge, stupid geopolitical mistake by mainland chinese leaders, which ALL chinese would regret later. The West sees China with 2 fallacies: 1. Being the largest country ruled by CCP (noticed during Trump Admin they addressed China not as a country but as CCP CHINA), they still had the 70s cold War Red tide Marxist mentality. And that worries happen even to some ASEAN leaders even though we have Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos as members. 2. CCP above country constitutions (because of subtle interpretation that Constitution is the law of the land; and the CCP gives the power to the Connstitutions) gives discomfort to the West On "Check-and-Balance" .. without understanding Asian cultural values in "collective and relative freedom" (versus West individual rights and freedom), they are afraid of emperor style superpower.

Don’t just ask what China should do for its neighbors. The south-east Asians are lucky to have China as their neighbor. You only need to look at the nations as US’s neighbors in the Central America. The premise that China is a quarrelsome neighbour, and has disputes with many of its neighbours is flawed. It is a very big country, so has many countries as neighbours. For a comparison, India has strained relations with most of its neighbours. It belligerently swallowed Sikkim with nary a protest from the world community and the self appointed protectors of the world order. Needless to say, it has gone to war many times with Pakistan before. Its neighbour to the South, Sri Lanka prefers to be more friendly with distant China. It is not exactly great friends with Nepal either, which it blockaded in recent times. Bhutan is completely under the knuckle of India - its foreign policy direction is decided by India. Which neighbour of China has been blockaded before by China or has its foreign policy directed by China?

Bhutan and Nepal offered to join the Indian union, but was turned down. There is more cultural unity with most neighbours with exception of Pakistan. China went to war with vietnam and occupied Tibet illegally… india on the other hand was divided into 3. Of you look back into history over 1000 years it was india or China which dominated in terms of GDP. Now is the time of China, in another 100 year it will be india. China I think will become more brutal once they establish themselves as a superpower because they have expansionist tendencies. There is much grief in store for SEA, Japan and Australia. A war in the near future is inevitable.

I viewed this video a few months ago, at the time, I felt the moderator’s comments were a bit odd at a number of occasions. I viewed it again today. Clearly, the moderator is a China hawk (perhaps a mild one) or at least sympathetic to the prevailing western narrative towards China, i.e. China is unquestionably a bad actor, it has to be feared, it is the source of all evils. At one point of the discussion, the moderator derided Kishore “I don’t think I can make you say anything bad about China this evening”. Kishore was perhaps too polite to push back on that comment. In spite of the obvious impartiality of the moderator, the panel shared some very thoughtful views. Kudos!

I think the western countries know that the 21 st. century belong to Asia. Most of the Asian countries will be prosperous and technologically advance so to stop this you have to create wars. The western countries can sell weapons and cause widespread destruction of the countries... Make Asian countries dependent on western countries for everything. Better approach is western and eastern countries should cooperate each other for the common good...peace, prosperity and prevent climate change of the world. I just wonder why if China is in such a great place, economically, politically etc., then why are they still considered a "developing country."
